Sidereal Time :
Sidereal time is derived form the earths rotation with respect to the stars. Sidereal day as the time takes by
earth to rotate once on its axis with reference to any fixed star. This duration of sidereal day is equal to 23
hours 56 minutes(approximately) or 23 hrs 56 min 4.091 sec. of mean solar day.
In astronomical terminology the sidereal time is defined to be the west hour angle of the Vernal Equinoctial
point or the first Sayana mesh from the upper meridian of the palce.
As the Lagna or ascendant or the sign of zodiac rising on the eastern horizon of a place at any time is
dependent on the rotation of the earth on its axis due to which the time system known as sidereal Time is
also created. so it becomes evident that the rising sign or the Lagna, inturn , is dependent on the Sidereal
Time of the place at the given moment or epoch.

How to Calculate Sidereal Time of a given moment or Epoch:

1. Calculate the sidereal time for birth 2 : 50 PM(IST) at Hyderabad on April -22-2012

Step 1: Calculate the LMT:

a.

Time of Birth given as per IST (or ZST)

b.

Apply LMT Correction: - 16 : 12

c.

LMT of Birth

hh : mm : ss
(as per Table I of TOA)

14 : 50 : 00

(as per P-100 to P-107 of TOA) ( - )

(= a b)

: 16 : 12

P-2 to P-3 of TOA

P-4 of TOA

14 : 33 : 48

P-100 to P-107 of TOA

Step 2: Calculate the Corrected Sidereal Time (CST) :

a.

Sidereal Time at 12 Noon on 22 /APR/1900

(as per Table I of TOA)

01 : 59 : 26

P-2 to P-3 of TOA

b.

Correction for the Year of Birth +3 m : 28 sec

( as per Table II of TOA)

02 : 02 : 54

P-4 of TOA

c.

Correction for Place of Birth = +0 m : 03 sec

(as per Table III of TOA)

02 : 02 : 57

P-100 to P-107 of TOA

d.

Corrected Sidereal Time at 12 Noon on 22 /APR/2012 @ Hyderabad

02 : 02 : 57

Step 3: Calculate the Corrected Time Interval (CTI) :

a.

LMT of Birth as obtained in Step: 1

b.

Subtract 12 hours from the above

c.

Increase in Time Interval = 20Sec +6Sec

d.

Corrected Time Interval (CTI)

14 : 33 : 48
(= a 12 h 0m 0s )

Step 4: Calculate the Sidereal Time for Epoch:

a.

Corrected Sidereal Time (CST) as per Step: 2

b.

Corrected Time Interval (CTI) as per Step: 3
