The CP function blocks own a number of statistical counters which record specific
events or situations. These counter data are taken by STS and used to generate
reports. The information is used in network management.
The Statistics and Traffic Measurement Subsystem (STS) is an IOG based APT
subsystem which contains the functions to receive, store, perform mathematical
operations and create user defined result printouts for the CP and SP counter data.
The counter data is read from the CP blocks at regular intervals and transferred
to STS. The SP also reports counter data to STS and this is treated by STS in
much the same way as the CP counter data.
STS counters are logically grouped into Object Types which correspond to
specific types of equipment or function units. Each Object Type has a unique
set of counters. For each Object Type there are one or more individuals called
objects, each having the same set of counters. This is analogous to records in a
CP software block from where the counters have been fetched.

Externally used Object and Object Type names used in commands and printouts
are translated into internally used numbers in the subsystem. The counters are
stored in the Measurement Data Base (MDB) and are referenced by the object
number and Object Type numbers.
Once the data is collected and stored in the MDB it is possible to obtain result
printouts of the data in a file in the file process utility (FPU) of the IOG or directly
on a specified IO device (alphanumeric report) for small amounts of data. For file
output, all of the counter data will be output, whereas, for alphanumeric output,
report programs are used for specifying the report content for the counter data.
