10 Unique Facts About

Valentines Day

By Montana Martin
1. 220,000 is the average number
of wedding proposals on Valentines Day each year.
2. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines day gifts.
3. 15 percent of U.S. women
send themselves flowers on Valentines Day.
4. Richard Cadbury produced the
first box of chocolates for Valentines Day in the late 1800s.
5. In the Middle Ages, young
men and women drew names
from a bowl to see who would
be their Valentine. They would
wear this name pinned onto their
sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin
of the expression to wear your
heart on your sleeve.
6. Girls of medieval times
ate bizarre foods on St. Valentines Day to make them
dream of their future spouse.
Ex:
Ketchup
Pancakes
7. About 1 billion Valentines
Day cards are exchanged each
year. This makes it the second
largest seasonal card sending
time of the year.
8. Based on retail statistics, about
3% of pet owners will give Valentines Day gifts to their pets.
9. 189 million stems of roses are
sold in the U.S. on Valentines
Day.
10. Teachers will receive the
most Valentines Day cards,
followed by children, mothers,
wives, sweethearts and pets.

YOUR CHANCE TO WIN $5,000

R
By Chloe Sierks
Its no surprise with Marvels
The Avengers generating
more than $1 billion in ticket
sales that everyone is experiencing a superhero frenzy. But
have you ever thought about
who you would classify as a
real-life superhero?
Doc Hendley is the founder
and president of the international program Wine to Water.
Doc created this program in
hopes of achieving his goal of
providing clean water to people
around the world. While putting
his own life in jeopardy, Doc
lived in Dufar, Sudan, where
he installed water systems for
the victims of a government
supported genocide in 2004.
During his stay he experienced
several traumatic incidents,
including the loss of two of

his team members and close

friends. His foundation currently occupies nine different countries and has saved thousands
of lives by providing them with
the most essential product to
humans; water.
The difference between Wine
to Water and the hundreds of
other programs that have tried
to give fresh water to poor
countries is that Doc worked
directly with many people that
belonged to those villages. He
believed that if he taught these
people how to make and fix the
wells he installed, they would
eventually stop needing his assistance and could provide fresh
water for themselves.
I attended one of Doc Hendleys inspirational presentations
at the National FCCLA Convention in Nashville in 2013.

While listening, I was stunned

at the amount of dedication and
hard work he put into a project
that had no physical benefits for
himself. To me, Doc is a primary example of a real-life hero
and the thousands of adults and
children he saved would agree.
Kaleigh Farmer, who also attended the convention said, I
would consider Doc Hendley
to be a real-life hero because he
not only helped people get clean
water; he also made a huge influence on their lives and wont
be forgotten. He made me realize how lucky I am.
But you dont have to put your
life in danger or save hundreds
of people to be classified as a
real life hero. Many people may
consider sports icons, movie
stars, or even relatives as heroes
in their own unique way.

Who would you consider a real-life hero?

You know, me and Paul actually have an older

brother, Elmer. Not much of a ball player,
but a fine fellow nonetheless, proud to also
claim the name Dean. Funny thing about
Elmer is, once we actually lost him. It was
1926, the summer I was 15. Me and Paul, my

father and Elmer had just finished clearing

one cotton patch, so we piled into a few
jalopies with our neighbors, heading out in
search of another. Me and Paul and my father
were in the first and Elmer and the neighbors
drove the second. Our caravan came to a
railroad crossing and the car I was in crossed
the tracks. Unfortunate thing was, a train
came along bout that time and Elmers car
had to wait for it. When the caboose finally
cleared the way, we was gone, out of sight,
and Elmers group never caught up. With no
telephones and hardly any money on hand, it
seemed our brother was lost for good.

It was four years before we found him! Elmer

was just eating some grub in a restaurant
nerve to fine me and Paul for this behavior?

a storm down in Houston. Elmer recognized
me in the paper as his brother Jay Hanna, and
he took himself right down to Houston and
got a job at the ballpark selling peanuts to the
crowd. We was finally reunited!
Course it were the younger Dean brothers
who became the dynamic duo on the ball
field. Paul signed on to the
Cardinals in March of 1934. I
told them press people that me
and Paul were gonna have a
family contest to see who could
win the most games. I figured
whoever won between us would
most certainly lead the National
League in wins. I couldnt see
how nobody could beat us
Redbirds with not one, but two
Deans on the team.
And I told them wed be sure to
win 45 games between us. And,
darn, if I didnt make good on that promise.
I went on ahead and won myself 30 games
with Paul performing not too shabby either,
winning himself a solid 19. For those of you
keepin track out there, thats a total of 49
wins for the Dean brothers.
Didnt I tell ya? It aint braggin
if you go out there and
get it done.

Extra Innings!
Dizzy and Daffy Dean went on strike
hoping to earn equal pay. Can you find an
example of a group on strike or completing
negotiations?
Dizzy and Daffy lost their brother, Elmer.
Newspapers often have a lost and found
