Ivey Withdraws Congressional Bid

Prince George’s State’s
Attorney Glenn Ivey,
once considered a serious
challenger to Rep. Donna
Edwards for Maryland’s
fourth congressional seat,
has decided to forgo a run for
Congress.
In a statement Ivey said,
“It has been very flattering
to receive support from all
quarters for my prospective
candidacy but after discussing
the personal and financial
rigors of the pursuit with my
wife, Jolene, my children
and other family members
and friends I have concluded
it would be in my best
interest to serve the greater
community in other ways at
this time.”
Ivey surprised many
when he announced he
wasn’t running for the county
executive position in Prince
George’s County. Seen as the
strong favorite, Ivey, at the
time, said a run for Capitol
Hill better matched his
political goals.
Just a month ago, Ivey told
the AFRO, “There’s a great
opportunity to serve. You’ve
got Democratic control of
the Senate and the House. I
think this is the time to get a
progressive agenda done.”
But after much
consideration, Ivey told
the AFRO, he changed his
immediate career plans.
“I just didn’t have the
appetite for a campaign right
now,” Ivey said. “I’m going
to take a break from politics
and finish out the year as
state’s attorney.”
Ivey was seen as a premier
candidate due to his prior
experience as a Capitol Hill
staffer and because of the job
he’s done as state’s attorney.
With Ivey at the helm of the
office, crime has dropped
significantly in Prince
George’s County.
“It’s a real shame,” said
political analyst P. Kenneth
Burns of Ivey’s decision.
“I’m really sad to see him
leave public life, especially
since he did such a great job
as state’s attorney.”
Many believe Ivey would
have received widespread
public support and hoped this
would sway his decision to
run.
“There have been a lot of
people who’ve been reaching
out and encouraging me to
run and offering to support
my campaign,” said Ivey. “I
really don’t want to let people
down so to that extent it’s
difficult.”
Although his decision to
leave public office creates a
void, he plans to play a key
role in upcoming elections.
“Glenn Ivey has provided
excellent leadership to the
people of Prince George’s
County as state’s attorney,”
said Susan Turnbull, chair
of the Maryland Democratic
Party. “We look forward to
having Glenn’s help locally
and throughout the state as we
work to elect Democrats in
2010.”
While Ivey says he will
stay away from public office
for the time being, politics
may not be out of his plans
forever.
“Maybe sometime down
the road,” he said about a
future run. “You know they
say, ‘one door closes and
another one opens.’ We just
have to see what those doors
are when we get there.”
However, others believe

Arenas Pleads
Guilty to Felony
Gun Charge

Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty
on Jan. 15 to the felony charge
of carrying a firearm without a
license in Washington, D.C.
Arenas entered the plea in
D.C. Superior Court as part
of a plea bargain, which will
guarantee he receives a sentence
at the low end of the sentencing
guidelines (six months to two
years). Without the plea bargain,
the 28-year-old Los Angeles, Gilbert Arenas
Calif., native could receive a AFRO File Photo
maximum five-year sentence for violating the District’s strict
gun laws. Arenas will remain free until his sentence hearing on
March 26. He is suspended indefinitely from the NBA.
Arenas admitted to federal authorities that he illegally stored
guns in his locker room at the Verizon Center, and took them
out in effort of a “misguided joke” played on his teammate,
Javaris Crittenton, on Dec. 21. Crittenton is also being

“Wyclef Jean Charity’s Funny

com unearthed an Internal
Revenue Service (IRS)
document pointing to the
charity’s inconsistent financial
record keeping and a copious
number of expenses for studio
rentals, public relations fees
and a $100,000 payment
for Jean to perform at a
benefit concert. The article
also claims Jean and Jerry
Duplessis, a Yéle Haiti board
member, paid $250,000 to
for-profit TV station Telemax
S.A. for “TV airtime and
production services” as part
of the foundation’s outreach
efforts in their native country.
However, Jean and Duplessis
both own an alleged
“controlling interest” in the
Haiti-based company.
“Did I ever use Yéle
money for personal benefits?
Absolutely not,” Jean said
at the press conference.
“Yéle’s books are open and

Jean once lived — said unlike
other celebrities inspired to

a lifelong advocate.
“Of all the organizations
out there, I trust Wyclef’s
more. That’s why I push his
organization. I tell everybody
to trust Yéle Haiti,” said
Therlonge, 25. “He’s Haitian
and he was born in Haiti; of
course he wants to see better
for our country. He’s not
trying to profit.”
To further refute the
accusations plaguing his
foundation, Jean visited the
“Oprah Winfrey Show” Jan.
20, where pop star Rihanna
and vocalist Maxwell, who
is of Haitian and Puerto
Rican descent, performed.

Ford Hopes to Win Consumers Back with Awards

Over the past several
years, American car
companies have taken a hit
publicly. From bad business
practices to having to accept
government bailouts, the
news out of Detroit hasn’t
been so good. However,
the only U.S. automaker to
refuse bailout funds believes
it is seeing the sunshine of a
brand new morning.
On Jan. 11, at the North
American International Auto
Show in Detroit, the Ford
Fusion Hybrid and Ford
Transit Connect won North

“We are making a
commitment in every area,”
said Gattari. “We’re focusing
on our product launches
and our plans, making our
company profitable for
stockholders and presenting
good products to our
customers.”

Let Them Come

I have purposely avoided the running news commentary,
photos and videos of the devastation in Haiti. Not because I
didn’t want to know about it – I did. I’ve been listening intently
when people discussed it around me and reading about the
country and the current situation. I wanted to think about and
react intellectually to the situation, not emotionally.
With a natural disaster, more than any other type of
devastation, it really could have been me, or us, instead of
them. “There but for the grace of God go I,” is what I’ve been
thinking and feeling since the earthquake. I didn’t want to add

members such as the United States, China, the Dominican
Republic, Brazil—in effect, countries with the regional and
development capacity to move large-scale projects quickly.
Cuba should be considered for the excellence of its medical
system that will be needed by Haiti for some time.
Then, a closer relationship between the United States and
Haiti must be developed that deepens the inter-play between
skilled Haitians and their interaction with their home country.
There are thousands of skilled Haitians in this country, but
we have not developed the mechanisms to address wage
differentials, etc. and other problems that would allow them
to easily transfer skills to their home country. Right now,
remittances constitute one-quarter of the Haitian GDP, a
magnet for leaving there and keeping skills in this country.
The opportunity that could come from this crisis through
an era of intense, positive involvement of America with Haiti,
so close to our shores, could not only create pride in what
Douglass called “the Black man’s country,” but contribute to
the reduction of racial animus here as well.

Showing What Crazy Looks Like

medicine, and as physicians,
relief workers and journalists
risk their lives to help
beleaguered Haitians, the
callous, venomous statements
of Rush Limbaugh and the
Rev. Pat Robertson show just

children chipping in their spending change and CNN showing

At a time when thousands of Haitians were buried under
concrete, the best Limbaugh could muster was a twisted
political statement about how the president was offering
humanitarian aid to “build credibility with both the light-
skinned and dark-skinned Black community in this country.”
Then he said it was doubtful that “money being donated to
Haiti through the White House Web site would actually go to
the relief efforts,” suggesting the administration would use this
money for their own special interests.
If that were not enough, televangelist Pat Robertson, who
once ran for president on the Republican ticket, said on his
“700 Club” TV show that Haiti’s troubles came from their
leadership making a pact with the devil some 200 years ago.
Every Republican who still has any semblance of decency
ought to be storming the airwaves denouncing Rush Limbaugh,
the mouthpiece of the GOP. Limbaugh has become so zealous
and frothy in his crusade to smear President Obama that he has
become the symbol of a lunatic.
How can Republicans put up with this kind of callous
political venom? Why aren’t their leaders denouncing
Limbaugh and Robertson? Is it because the GOP is so intent on
making our president fail, as Limbaugh has decreed, that they
will twist every presidential act, no matter how noble, to satisfy
their own pathetic objectives?
Where, for example, is RNC chairman Michael Steele? If
there is any hope for the GOP to be anything but a Gross Old
Party, he should be out front putting Limbaugh in his place. But
the last time Steele corrected Limbaugh, it was Steele who later
cowed in a corner, backtracking on his statements.

The ability to look at human suffering and make judgments
only based on skin color is what we saw during Hurricane
Katrina under President George Bush. We saw U.S. citizens
– war veterans, school children, teachers, soccer coaches,
grandmothers, some wrapped in the American flag – stranded
on roof tops, sweltering on asphalt highways, knee-deep
in rat infested waste shared with human bodies – while our
government headed by George Bush relaxed at his Texas ranch.
We recoiled as we saw the U.S.-born Black population of New
Orleans labeled as “refugees” as justification for aid being slow
to come.
We are not fooled by a party who allows Limbaugh, who
has announced the failure of Obama as his mission, to be its
mouthpiece and de facto WPIC (White person in charge).
Limbaugh stands for race hatred. In recent years, he reportedly
told a Black caller on his radio show, “Take that bone out of
your nose and call me back.” He asked his audience, “Have you
ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals
resemble Jesse Jackson?” Of civil rights groups, he said, “the
NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor
store and practice robberies.” Recently he has enjoyed playing
the song “Barack the Magic Negro” on the air.
It is not our president who is failing but Limbaugh who
is failing as a human being. In addition, it is Pat Robertson
who should know the devil is not confined to Haiti – which
incidentally is 80 percent Christian – when evil abounds
everywhere.
In stating that Haitians made a pact with the devil, the
GOP’S vicar is apparently referring to a voodoo ceremony
that in Haitian national mythology initiated the 1848 French
revolution. In the ceremony, Haitian leader Boukman
supposedly said: “The White man’s god asks him to commit
crimes. But the god within us wants to do good. Our god, who
is so good, so just, he orders us to revenge our wrongs. It’s he
who will direct our arms and bring us the victory. It’s he who
will assist us. We all should throw away the image of the White
men’s god who is so pitiless. Listen to the voice for liberty that
speaks in all our hearts.”
Most people reading these words see an oppressed people
rejecting the God of their oppressors, just as Black slaves once
did in this country. In the minds of people like Robertson,
however, those who reject the god who champions oppression
must be devil-worshippers.
If the devil is running things as Robertson alleges he
clearly has found many cohorts in the party of Limbaugh and
Robertson.

African Americans Divided Into Two Basic Groups

to admit there are basically
two groups of Black people
in this country. As we enter
a new year, it is time to
confront this obvious reality
so as to better plan a more
productive present and future
for our people.
The attitudes of one group,
most definitely the largest,
are best reflected in quotes by

Black person learns very
early that his color is a disadvantage in a world of White
folks. This being an unalterable circumstance, one also learns
very early to make the most of it. So the lifetime endeavor of
the intelligent Negro is how to be reasonably happy though
colored;” Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas: “If I
ever went to work for the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission or did anything directly connected with Blacks,
my career will be irreparably ruined. The monkey would be
on my back because I am Black. People meeting me for the
first time will automatically dismiss my thinking as second
rate;” Thomas Sowell: “Black students with SAT scores of
1000 should not consider going to any black college because
they will be educationally mismatched;” Bryant Gumbel: “I
have become colorless. I have a clear speech and non-ethnic
characteristics;” and ballerina Janet Collins: “When you get to
be an exceptional Black, you don’t belong to the Whites and
you don’t belong to the Blacks. You are too good for the Blacks
and you will always be Black to the Whites.”
The attitudes of the other group are best reflected in quotes
by Malcolm X: “We must establish all over the country schools
of our own to train our children to become scientists and
mathematicians. We must realize the need for adult education
and for job retraining programs that will emphasize a changing

the race by bringing together the pennies and dollars of our
people and ploughing them into useful channels. I leave you
respect for knowledge. Knowledge is the prime need of the
hour;” and Lerone Bennett Jr.: “Given the way we were forced
to live in this society, the miracle is not that so many families
are broken, but that so many are still together. That so many
Black fathers are still at home. That so many Black mothers
are still raising good children. It is the incredible toughness and
resilience in Black people that gives me hope.”
Those guided and influenced by the words of Brother
Malcolm, Dr. King, Mrs. Bethune and Bennett should not
be dismayed that those influenced by the quotes of Schuyler,
Thomas, Sowell, Gumble and Collins are in the majority.
Serious movements have never been launched by or early
supported by the majority. What they must do is to join together
with like-minded people in their neighborhoods and thoroughly
study, as a call to action, the guidelines offered by Brother
Malcolm, Dr. King, Mrs. Bethune and Bennett. It is also
critically important to read and organize around the Master Plan
offered by Dr. Chancellor Williams in Chapter 15 of his classic,
must-read book, The Destruction of Black Civilization; Great
Issues of a Race From 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D.

Gilbert Arenas Spoofed in Online Comedy Film

Exclusive interview with film writer and actor

Most personal friends or associates of Wizards suspended
guard Gilbert Arenas would describe the 28-year-old
basketball star as a one-of-a-kind character. Some would even
say Arenas does things that you’d expect to see in a fiction
movie.
That’s exactly what up-and-coming actor/film writer Brian
Spaeth thought in 2005 when he first began putting together
characters for his full-length feature film, Who Shot Mamba?,
an NBA-focused comedy that will become one of the world’s
first Broadband Motion Pictures streamed online upon its
release this month.
Spaeth took on the film’s lead role, Merri Sherman, who
was framed for the murder of his best friend, a charismatic
talking snake named Mamba. Spaeth’s character must follow
the “ominous, doom-laden instructions of the Prophesy of the
Orange Roundie – a magical basketball – in order to unravel
the truth and clear his name.”
But while Spaeth was developing the characteristics of the
villain of his film, he was inspired by the unique, charismatic
personality of Wizards star Arenas.
“At the time I conceived WSM?, Gilbert was just making
his name nationally in that first NBA Playoff series against the
Cleveland Cavaliers,” Spaeth told the AFRO. “It was right
around that time his blog was starting to blow up also, and the
guy was just so unique.”
At the moment Spaeth—a Cleveland Ohio native—speaks
of, the Wizards had just been eliminated from the playoffs by
the Cavaliers, which triggered a three-year playoffs rivalry
between the Wizards and Cavs. During that season, Gilbert had
begun a web blog that displayed his goofy, unusual and often
unpredictable behavior off the basketball court. That’s when
Spaeth decided to make his villain a parody of Arenas.
“It just sort of made sense to me,” Spaeth said. “And when
the name Calvin Stadiums popped into my head, it screamed
‘iconic’ and that was that.”

film, Stadiums performs over-the-top jokes and leads a cult
obsessed with the NBA’s shortly used and retired synthetic
basketball. Stadiums also fuels a situation that involves gun
play, which heightens the fictional reflection of real-life Gilbert
Arenas.
“The film was finished in the summer of 2008, so that
this is all happening now during our release is a bit of karma
or fate or coincidence - whichever of those you believe in,”
Spaeth said.
The similarities between Stadiums and Arenas are so close
that Arenas nearly agreed to play the character himself a few
years ago.
“We talked to Gilbert’s people about this and there was a
loose handshake agreement for him to be in the film,” Spaeth
explained. “His schedule was tough to work with, but what
really sealed the decision for us was meeting Dylan.”
Dylan Moody is an actor from Santa Barbara, Calif., who
nailed the role of Calvin Stadiums. Moody played basketball
in college so it was almost natural for him to portray an
NBA player. After watching several online interviews and
documentary specials on Arenas, Moody was ready to breathe
life into the Stadiums character.
“I didn’t want to do an imitation. I more so wanted to find
the foundation of where this quirky personality was,” Moody
told the AFRO.
“I went back and read a lot of his old blog and read up on
him, as well. I’m a basketball fan, so I was pretty familiar with
him already. I threw a little Michael Jordan into Calvin, too.”
But Spaeth said Moody didn’t really need to research
Arenas’ personality too much because they already shared
similar characteristics.
“He had the charismatic presence of a pro athlete, is a
phenomenal and fearless actor, and instinctively knew the
delicate balance between serious and ridiculous [that] we
needed in the character,” Spaeth said. “We’re talking about an
arrogant professional athlete who’s also completely insane.
It’d be easy for an actor to go too far one way or the other, but
Dylan nailed it.”
Moody said that up until recently when Gilbert was
charged for felony gun possession, the basketball star had
always carried himself as a clean cut, hard working, and classy
gentleman, so he really had nothing bad to draw from Gil to
help during scenes that involved negativity. 
“It was my own inner creativity that had to manifest a more
sinister mentality when portraying his character,” Moody said.
“More than anything, Gilbert’s essence has always been one
of charisma - he’s a presence. I tried to bring that through
whether he was being a good guy or a bad guy.”

“We’re hoping to be able to do a sequel, and the real oddity
is that where I’ve always seen the Stadiums character going in
the next movie is very close to what’s happening to Arenas in
real life now.”

‘To Hell in a Hand Basket’
When I was a little guy I used to hear the
old folks make a comment about something
going to hell in a hand basket. I had no clue
what they were talking about other than
whatever it was, it couldn’t be good. As I
grew older, the comment would surface from
time to time, but it still held no interest for
me.
Now, I finally understand what they were
talking about. As I look at what is going on
in the sports world, all I can say is, “Some
things are going to hell in a hand basket.”
What provoked this thought are the recent
actions of Washington Wizards guard Gilbert
Arenas and some of the other knuckleheads
who think they are living in the “wild, wild
West.” When I heard that there was a little
gun play in the Wizards locker room, I had to
do a double take.
I don’t know what kind of atmosphere
induces the need for firearms in the
workplace, but I do know it is against the
law. I also know that most people with
common sense will view the plight of New
York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress with a
certain amount of trepidation.
In case you are in the dark, let me pull
your coat. Plaxico was packing a little heat,
and though minding his own business, he
managed to shoot himself. No bystanders
were injured, but the authorities arranged a
little vacation for Plaxico so he could reflect
on the laws of the state of New York. When
the Giants were contenders a few years
ago, there may have been the need for law
enforcement to look the other way. After all,
there was a chance that a championship was
coming to town, and this was one of the guys
who could make it happen.
If you recall, NFL lineman, Tank Johnson
was visited by a few members of the police
with a search warrant in tow. They found a
small arsenal in Tank’s house. At the time,
Tank was a force on the defensive line of the
Chicago Bears, who were on a run towards
the Super Bowl. A Chicago judge exercised
his right to put the matter on hold until after
the big game. When the confetti was swept
aside and things returned to normal, Tank
was reminded that he had dues to pay.
This ain’t New York or Chicago, but I am
sure that the guy in the long black robe with
the wooden hammer is going to arrange for
Gilbert to do a little soul searching.
Aside from the fact that this incident took
place, it amazes me how these people can get
this sudden pang of conscience and “fess up”
to actions we don’t know about. Gilbert has
suddenly spilled the beans on four other guns
he has been carrying in public and the work
place.
It is my feeling that this is not going to
bode too well because he was jacked up for
carrying a firearm back in 2004.
I am of the mind that Gilbert won’t be cut
any slack because he isn’t the popular fellow
he was when he came to Washington to lead
the Wizards to the “Promise Land.” Gilbert
has talent, but, unfortunately, he has an ego
slightly larger than the talent.
For the past few seasons he has spent
much of his time on the bench wearing a suit
and tie. He has been quoted as making a few
comments trashing the efforts of the guys
who are suiting up every night while he sits
on his fat wallet modeling his Armani suits.
And, if you have been paying attention, the
Wizards haven’t been pressed to make space
in their trophy case for the hardware Gilbert
is supposed to be bringing home.
There is something going on every day
with these superstars, and it seems to be a
hard lesson to get them to realize that they
are not untouchable. However, it doesn’t

Division I schools next season
to go along with a deep and
talented team destined for a
strong finish this season.
What more could the
11-year veteran coach ask
for?—just a state title. After
losing 62-61 to rival DeMatha
in last year’s WCAC final,
the mission is clear for Turner
and the Eagles this season.
But the mission has always
been clear for the D.C.
Native. A graduate of Blair
High School, Turner, 39,
knows patience is the key.
After working his way up
the coaching ladder from a
youth league coach to one of
the most coveted jobs in the
nation, Turner isn’t rushing
anything. Similar to his
coaching style, he’s just going
with the flow.
“When I was in high
school, I spent time working
with the youth leagues at the
Boys and Girls Club and it
was something I was real
passionate about and I really
liked doing it,” Turner recalls.

“When I had the opportunity
coming home from college
in the summers, I spent time
working with an AAU group
called the D.C. Blue Devils
and that’s kind of where
everything got started for
me.”
It’s a start that almost
went into a different
direction. After high school,
Turner went north to tiny
Southern Connecticut
University to play soccer.
It was there that he started
to dive into coaching,
assisting with practices,
video coordinating and
helping both the men’s and
women’s basketball programs.
His communications
background allowed him to
do an internship in running a
summer basketball camp and
after his graduation, Turner
put all those experiences to
good use.
“After college I had an

kids that I was coaching on
the AAU circuit who started
going to high schools were
attending some of the schools
here in the WCAC,” Turner
said. “I was afforded an
opportunity to become the
head junior varsity coach at
Pallotti High School.”
Turner began his stint
with Gonzaga as the varsity
assistant head coach in
1999 while also juggling his
responsibilities as the junior
varsity head coach. After
becoming the varsity head
coach in 2004, Turner and the
Eagles won a combined 49
games his first three seasons
before going 34-1 in the
2007 season and winning the
WCAC, city and Alhambra
championships in Turner’s
fourth year as head coach.

James H. M. Henderson, Ph. D.,
was an internationally known
plant physiologist. Most of his
teaching and research years
were spent at Tuskegee
University at the George
Washington Carver Research
Foundation, where he was
director for several years.
He spent several tours of
research activity in both the
United States and foreign
countries. He was actively
involved in numerous scientific
organizations and has been a

growing up on a farm. His childhood days
were happy and busy, with duties consisting
of taking care of the chickens, feeding them, loving wife, Gwendolyn Presley Kenney
collecting eggs, and other small chores. As
a teenager, he was responsible for milking
the Guernsey cow. Naturally, his academic
interests were enhanced by his farm
experience with plants and animals.
Jimmy and his brother attended school
in the District of Columbia, where their
father taught. After graduating from Dunbar
High School, he completed a bachelor’s
degree in biology at Howard University. His
graduate years were spent at the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned
his doctoral degree in plant physiology.
During the war years, he was accepted as a
junior chemist at Badger Ordnance Works
(Baraboo, Wisc.) to work on the production
of smokeless powder.
His post-doctorate appointment at the
California Institute of Technology was

Alice Francis. After moving
to Pasadena, Calif., for the

Final Four Face Off

Peyton Manning’s Offense
vs. Rex Ryan’s Defense
It may not be the matchup
most viewers wanted, but it’s
certainly what they’ll get.
The New York Jets (11-7)
will travel to Indianapolis
to take on the top-seeded
Colts (14-3) in the always
marketable battle of David
vs. Goliath. The Jets, fresh
off their upset victory over
the second-seeded San Diego
Chargers, defeated the Colts,
29-15, in a week 16 meeting
during the regular season but
Indianapolis rested several of
their starters after halftime of
that game while New York
was fighting for a playoff
berth.
New York first year
quarterback Mark Sanchez
will make the third time in
the last five seasons that a
rookie quarterback has started
in the AFC’s Conference
Championship game.
The Baltimore Ravens’
Joe Flacco made his
appearance last year while
the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben

Sanchez will be hoping for a
better outcome as both Flacco

cornerback in the league.
Revis’ play this season has
been one of the headliners
in the Jets’ success and his
ability to handle marquee
receivers in one-on-one
matchups has been widely
acknowledged across the
league.
Revis will likely matchup
with Manning’s top target,
Reggie Wayne, and that
battle will be critical towards
the game’s outcome.
Manning and Wayne have
made a living of exposing
secondaries this season,
but Revis’ presence could
influence Manning to look
elsewhere with the football.
While the Colts will be
heavily favored, the Jets
actually matchup extremely
well with Indianapolis. The
play of Revis and the Jets
secondary could neutralize
Manning and the Colts
explosive passing attack
while New York’s league-
leading ground game could
be problematic for a Colts
team that notoriously
struggles to stop the run.
The Jets will take on the
Colts on Sunday, Jan. 24 at
Lucas Oil Stadium at 3 p.m.

The Minnesota Vikings
(13-4) and the New Orleans
Saints (14-3) have been the
two best teams in the NFC all
season so it’s only fitting that
they meet in conference title
game to settle things out. The
Vikings have been dominant
at home but vulnerable on the
road, where their only losses
of the season have come
in embarrassing fashion at
times.
The Saints started the
year as a dominant home
team before a couple of late
season losses lightened up
their mystique. Their 45-
14 win over the Arizona
Cardinals last week restored
that mystique somewhat, but
Arizona was missing a slew
of key players.
The Vikings will be
mostly healthy and will make
a strong push on the road
to get All-Pro quarterback
Brett Favre, 40, one last
shot at a Super Bowl. The
challenge will be daunting
for the Vikings who will be
up against a raucous Saints
crowd hungry for the club’s
first Super Bowl appearance.
Including their 34-3
over the Dallas Cowboys
last week, the Vikings have
outscored their last two
opponents, 78-10, and appear
to be on the right track after a
late season slide. Minnesota
has all the ingredients needed
to advance including a strong
running game, smothering

the Saints at the Superdome
earlier in the season.
But when focused, New
Orleans has been dominant
at times this season and will
undoubtedly be tuned in for

In the case at hand, the
court finds that the
plaintiff has performed a
diligent search. The
plaintiff has provided the
court with the time,
place, and cir-
cumstances of her last
contact with the defen-
dant, which occurred in
January 1996 when she
last resided with the
defendant. The plaintiff
attempted to contact the
defendant’s family in
Ethiopia and spoke with
defendant’s brother, sis-
ter, father and sister-in-
law. Defendant’s family
members told the
plaintiff that they had not
heard form the defen-
dant since 2001. Plaintiff
has also tried to call var-
ious businesses in Gon-
dar, Ethiopia in the
defendant’s past line of
work, however, none of
the businesses she con-
tacted has hired the
defendant. Additionally,
the plaintiff called the in-
formation operator in
Gondar and Addis Abba,
Ethiopia and Kartoum,
Sudan (where defen-
dant’s family suggested
the defendant may have
moved) and none had a
listing for the Defendant.
F u r t h e r, d e f e n d a n t
searched telephone in-
formation, motor vehicle
departments and jails in
the DC area without any
success. Plaintiff has
also traveled to Ethiopia,
but could still not as-
certain the defendant’s
whereabouts.
In accordance with DC
Code §13-338, the
plaintiff has provided the
court with proof of a
summons being issued
or a certified letter being
sent and returned.
Based on the foregoing,
the court finds that the
plaintiff has made dili-
gent efforts to locate the
defendants.
Accordingly, it is this
