This university boasts 26,000 undergraduate students. This incredible fact combined
with the sheer size of the campus and abundance of entertainment options in the
Washington area makes capturing students attention when planning an on-campus
event fairly challenging.
Take it from me: Im the president of this universitys student concert and
entertainment programming board, Student Entertainment Events, better known as
SEE. We plan more than 60 concerts, comedy shows, performing arts events, movies,
special events and lectures for the university community each year, and we work very
hard to make these events visible on the campus.
Fortunately, in the past few months, we have managed to coordinate several
prominent events, including Art Attack XXXI featuring Big Sean and Wale, our Fall
Lecture featuring Bill Nye, our Back-To-School Concert Attack of the Backpack
featuring Joey Bada$$ and, most recently, the Homecoming Comedy Show featuring
Joel McHale. We are also currently looking forward to our sold-out comedy show with
Kevin Hart in just two short weeks on Nov. 1.
And, of course, SEE is always planning and promoting smaller-scale events to cater to
as many student interests as possible. For example, we present Free Fall Movies and
advanced screenings, including a prescreening of Nightcrawler on Oct. 23, special event
tours such as the Seventeen Tour this semester and performing arts shows such as
Catapult shadow dancers earlier this month.
We strive to program both diversely and based on what the student body wants.
However, beyond surveys and research, the best way we can determine what students
want is by recruiting new students to our executive board.
On Oct. 10, SEE released the application for 2015-16 director positions at
http://see.umd.edu/recruitment. Applications are due Oct. 27, and we implore any
interested freshman, sophomore or junior to apply to be a part of our organization and,
consequently, become a part of the SEE family.
There are many reasons being a part of SEE is a rewarding experience. As we go
through the steps of organizing an event whether we are in logistical, eventplanning, promotional or other roles, based on our specific positions we gain
incomparable hands-on professional experience. We learn to correspond with agents
and campus authorities and collaborate with fellow SEE members. And equally
important, as a SEE director, you gain 22 best friends people who care
unconditionally about your well-being both inside and outside of the organization.
This spring, 15 SEE directors will graduate. That means we need to fill at least 15
director positions in this application period. If you are seeking a professional oncampus position, or even just looking to find your niche at this university, apply to be a
director. Its an opportunity to make a difference on the campus and, in doing so, meet
stellar people and make unforgettable memories. Its a decision you wont regret.
