Topic: Anthelmentic
Title: COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY OF LEAF EXTRACT OF MUSA
ACUMINATE COLLA AND CAJANUS CAJAN (LINN.) LEAF EXTRACT
Bibliography: Kumar A. (2010) Comparative Studies on anthelmintic of leaf extract of Musa Acuminate
Colla and Cajanus Cajan leaf Extract . retrieved from http://mintagejournals.com
Summary:
This article , simply specifies Methanolic extract of leaf of Musa acuminate colla and
seed of Cajanus cajan (Linn.) were taken for the examination of anthelmintic activity on Indian
earthworm (Pheretima posthuma). Both plant extract were tested and results were expressed
in terms of time of paralysis and time of death of worms. Albendazole of same concentration as
like as plant extracts was taken as reference standard and normal saline solution as control.
Paralysis time can be determined by vigorous shaking when no movement was observed.
When whitish substances were secreted from the body that one was termed as death time.
Both the extracts show significant anthelmintic activity but among these two, Musa acuminate
colla showed more anthelmintic activity than Cajanus cajan (Linn.).
Reflection:
Firstly I want to share some points that ive learned about Anthelmentic
drugs .Anthelmintic is the term used to describe a drug used to treat infections of animals with
parasitic worms. This includes both flat worms, like flukes (trematodes) and tapeworms
(cestodes) as well as round worms (nematodes). The parasites are of huge importance for
human tropical medicine and for veterinary medicine. While reading the article , I wasnt able to
understand the actions of the two extracts, but as ive read all throughout the article ive
realized that both plant extracts showed significant anthelmintic activity in which the MLE of
Musa acuminate colla and MSE of Cajanus cajan (Linn.) acts respectively against the
earthworm Pheretima posthuma in which the drug Albendazole exhibits anthelmintic activity by
blocking glucose uptake and depletion of glycogen stores in test parasite. But in the results, it
shows that MLE is more active than MSE. Because MLE shows paralysis at 45.43 min and
death at 129.83 min, whereas shows paralysis at 56.19 min and death at 151.63 min. Paralysis
is the loss of the ability to move of the worm Pheretima posthuma, to conclude this,
antihelmentic drug albendazole is important because It works by killing the worms, most
especially because it is used to treat infections caused by roundworms, hookworms,
threadworm, whipworm, pinworm, flukes, and other parasites.

INTRODUCTION
Plant material collection
Phytochemical screening
The Tribal as well as non-tribal peoples of Tripura traditionally use
these two plants against helminthiasis. The aim of the present
study is to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic activity of Musa
acuminate colla and Cajanus cajan (Linn.) leaf and seed extract.
