Itinerary Specially Prepared for
DARAMALAN COLLEGE RUGBY TOUR TO NEW ZEALAND 2015

WELCOME
Daramalan College have become trusted friends over the years. We have hosted
your rowing squad, cricket team and once again your rugby side. What an amazing
sports school you have and your touring programme is second to none. It is an
absolute pleasure hosting your students and staff. You have quite an itinerary in
front of you with an excursion to the mighty West Coast. That will be a new
experience for you.
I look forward to spending time with you again on your April rugby tour.

INTRODUCTORY NOTES
Weather: April is autumn weather, which means it can be very changeable.
Temperatures can fluctuate wildly, from high 20s / low 30s to almost single
figures. However, the average should be about 16 degrees Celsius.
Grounds: It has been a very hot and dry summer this year so hopefully the
grounds will be in great condition. If the weather is still warm they could be very
hard. Multi-studded boots should be adequate for backs (no guarantee), but are
unlikely to provide adequate traction for tight forwards. Medium length studs
recommended. (Please be aware the West Coast has a high rainfall, which could
adversely affect surface conditions.)
Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is
common practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting
teams. This is meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as
they wish. Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m
line and front up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed
at the end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition.
Mouthguards: Mouthguards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand.
The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.
Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in
New Zealand age group rugby.
After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after
match function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain.
The after match is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches are
made by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is
also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form
of a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/
badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served.
Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations
and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for
storing ice at matches.
First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game as it is in
Australia. Initial first aid is generally administered by coaching and/or management
staff. Emergency services are available for more serious injuries. The emergency
number in New Zealand is 111. There are after-hours medical services available in
all main centres. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services
including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travel
insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their own
policies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directly
with them.

Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make an
early request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source a
range of gear.
Laundry: A full laundry facility is provided at Adams House, coin operated laundry
facilities are available at your other accommodation providers
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary
(excluding the night when the players are billeted). Breakfasts will be at your
accommodation (excluding Franz Josef where meals will be at a local restaurant)
and are continental (typically cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches are
packed and are provided at your accommodation to be collected each day as you
leave breakfast, dinners are two course (main course and dessert) or buffet style.
Security/valuables: This is your own responsibility. Valuables have been stolen
before. Please never assume that it will be okay to leave valuables unattended or
gear rooms unlocked. Every attempt will be made to assist you with your own
security.
Itinerary Times: All the times shown on this itinerary have been booked and
confirmed with the accommodation providers and activity operators. For meal time
changes please liaise directly with the hotel. If you wish to change timings for any
activities or find you are running behind schedule please contact Total Rugby so
that we can inform the operator
Vouchers: On your arrival your tour leader will be given a voucher booklet
containing the vouchers you will be required to hand over to our operators for the
various activities included in your tour.
Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phone
numbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your activities
but we will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss the days
events and go over the next day, or in the morning.
Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your flight
please complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with care and
ensure rugby boots are clean prior to your departure.
Emergency and Risk Management: Total Rugby have an Emergency Management
Plan that you will have a copy of. Staff will take you through this and ask for a sign
off.

Owen Franks
Owen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 and All
Blacks debut just a few months later. His call up to the
All Blacks capped a national representative career that
included appearances for New Zealand Under 21 and
New Zealand Schools.

He started against Ireland in the first Test of 2010,

joining brother Ben in becoming the first set of siblings
to start a Test for the All Blacks since the Brookes in
1997.

Many consider the powerful prop to be one of the world's

best despite his tender age for a practitioner of the dark
arts.

His call up to the 2011 All Blacks squad came off the back of a stunning
Investec Super Rugby season with the Crusaders, where their scrum ruled
against every team they played against.

Owen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 when he came on as a

substitute against the Force and made his first start in the victory over the
Bulls where he made a big impact against the big South Africans.

He made his All Blacks debut just a few months later in front of a home
crowd in Christchurch, coming on as a replacement for John Afoa in the 59th
minute. He earned his first Test start against South Africa at Kings Park
Stadium in Durban.
Canterbury caps: 18
Crusader caps: 100
Test caps: 67

Colin Slade
Colin Slade made his All Blacks debut in 2010, on the back
of an excellent season with Canterbury in the ITM Cup.

Despite a horror run with injuries in 2011, suffering two

broken jaws in the same season for the Highlanders, he
was named in the All Blacks squad as Dan Carter's
understudy.

Colin racked up 62 points over five games for the New

Zealand Under 19 side in 2006 during the IRB Under 19
World Championship.
He then made a mark in New Zealand's friendly against Fiji
in July 2011. He scored a try, two penalties and four conversions for the All
Blacks. He then played in New Zealand's opening Tri-Nations game against
South Africa and scored New Zealand's sixth try of the match, resulting in
victory by 407. He came on as a substitute in New Zealand's next match
against Australia. He got his first Tr-Nations start against South Africa in the
All Blacks penultimate game.
He was selected for the 2011 RWC and came on as a substitute in the
opening match where he scored a conversion after Maa Nonus try. After Dan
Carter injured his groin and was forced out of the 2011 RWC it was
announced that Colin would become the All Blacks starting fly-half for the
remainder of the World Cup. He then aggravated a groin tear injury during
the Argentina game and was ruled out of the rest of the Cup.
He then suffered a season-ending injury in March 2012, when he broke his
ankle playing for the Highlanders team.
Colin has been in an out of the All Blacks over the past three seasons as he
has vied for a number of positions (most prominent being No 10) with other
players. His value was recognised last year with 6 tests. He has played wing,
fullback, 1st 5 and halfback for the ABs
Canterbury caps: 44
Crusader caps: 50
Highlanders caps: 21
Test caps: 1

0930 After breakfast check out of Adams House and depart by rental vehicles for
the West Coast. Todays drive is 265km (approx. 3.5 hours) Travelling west

River towards the Southern Alps to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass where a
short break is recommended. Then descend through the Otira Viaduct and
alpine beech rain forests to Hokitika for your overnight stay.
Hokitika is now a relatively quiet township more dependent upon farming and
tourism than it was a 100 years ago. From about 1864 when the township
first sprang up it was like most other Coast towns a centre of boasting gold
miners, hundreds of hotels and liquor shops, dancing girls and a considerable
population of diggers from many parts of the world.
Late this afternoon players will meet their billets and depart for their
overnight stay. You will be welcomed onto the school with a traditional Maori
welcome.
Staff to overnight at a Heritage Highway Motel - 12 Fitzherbert Street,

terminal face of either glacier, however a walk to the closest viewing point is
highly recommended. There are a number of sightseeing tours available from
Franz Josef township.
Included in your itinerary today is a visit to the Glacier Hot Pools, you can
choose to do this during the afternoon or in the evening

Matheson is recommended. The walk is approx. 20 minutes each way and
well worth it!
LAKE MATHESON
At Lake Matheson, near Fox Glacier, nature has combined
exactly the right ingredients to create truly stunning
reflections of New Zealand's highest peaks - Aoraki (Mount
Cook) and Mount Tasman. The waters of Lake Matheson
are dark brown,so on a calm day they create the ideal
reflective surface. By a happy coincidence, the mountains
to the east are perfectly positioned to reflect in the lake.
An easy walk passes over the Clearwater River suspension
bridge, just a few minutes from the car park. The track
continues through ancient native forest, including tall rimu trees, to a
pontoon that extends out to the lake. Lake Matheson was formed about
14,000 years ago when the Fox Glacier retreated from its last major advance
towards the sea and left a depression which was filled with water.
Arrive Wanaka late afternoon, accommodation has been confirmed for 1 night
