When I invented Plastination my goal was to allow people of all educational backgrounds to learn more about
health and anatomy through real human specimens. Since 1995 I have achieved this by presenting real anatomical
specimens, preserved through Plastination in my BODY WORLDS exhibitions. The BODY WORLDS exhibitions
have now travelled globally and have been seen by more than 35 million people.
Meine Erfindung der Plastinationstechnik in den 1970iger Jahren war motiviert von dem Wunsch, Menschen aller
Bildungsschichten anhand echter menschlicher Prparate fr Gesundheit und Anatomie zu sensibilisieren. Seit
1982 bieten wir Plastinate und anatomische Prparate zum Zwecke der Aufklrung, Lehre und Forschung an. Mit
den KRPERWELTEN Ausstellungen und den dort gezeigten menschlichen, durch Plastination konservierten Exponaten, erreichen wir seit 1996 auch ein greres Publikum von inzwischen 35 Millionen Besuchern weltweit.
But even longer, since 1982, my endeavors have included serving the medical community by offering plastinates
and related anatomical specimens for teaching and research purposes. Von Hagens Plastination allows my team
and I to continue and expand this work by providing state-of-the-art specimens and products for public, private
and instructional use allowing for a learning experience that is unprecedented.
Our specimens stem from body donors who have given their consent and bequeathed during their lifetime that their
bodies should be used for the education of future generations through Plastination. We cooperate with the Institute
for Plastination which has more that 13.000 body donors on its donor roster. We strictly restrict our specimens
from human bodies to qualified users. These are institutions or individuals which use specimens exclusively for
research and educational purposes or for medical, diagnostic and therapeutic education. As a customer, you do
not pay for the body of the deceased donor, but for the actual expenses of plastination.
As the inventor of Plastination I am proud to be able to present original specimens that reflect the most advanced
standards of my Plastination science. My team and I have continued to research, develop and improve the process
over the past 35 years and we are pleased to be able to offer you plastinates of the highest quality. All plastinates
offered through Von Hagens Plastination are produced under my scientific leadership.

Natrlich werde ich hufig gefragt, woher unsere Prparate stammen, darum mchte ich diese Frage an dieser
Stelle aufgreifen. Unsere Prparate kommen von Menschen, die zu Lebzeiten ihr schriftliches Einverstndnis zur
Krperspende geben, um damit die Ausbildung knftiger Generationen zu untersttzen. Dabei arbeiten wir mit dem

The mission of von Hagens Plastination is to enable teaching with unparalleled learning experiences through the use of authentic human
specimens for students, teachers, doctors, scientists and medical
professionals. Our selection of teaching specimens includes Silicone
Plastinates, Sheet Plastinates and Blood Vessel Configurations. Other
available services include the adaptation of specimens to specific requirements of educational institutions, universities, museums and science centers.
Made in Germany
All specimens are the result of work by a tenured, experienced team

under the direction of Dr. Gunther von Hagens in our laboratories in Guben near Berlin, Germany. Our site houses a state-of-the-art Plastination laboratory and The PLASTINARIUM, --- our anatomical exhibition
and showroom. Additionally we offer on-site events, such as courses
and lectures. The specimens developed in Guben come largely from
real human bodies that are permanently preserved through Plastination.

Anatomie zum Anfassen

Ziel der von Hagens Plastination ist es, mit echten menschlichen Lehrprparaten beispiellose Lernerfahrungen zu ermglichen und das
Studierenden und Lehrenden, rzten und Wissenschaftlern, medizinischen Mitarbeitern und interessierten Laien gleichermaen. Die
Auswahl der Lehrprparate reicht von Silikonplastinaten ber Scheibenplastinate bis zu Gefgestalten. Zum Angebot gehrt auch die
Anpassung der Prparate an spezielle Anforderungen von Lehreinrichtungen, Universitten, Museen oder Science Centern.

Smtliche Prparate werden von einem festangestellten, erfahrenen
Team unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung von Dr. Gunther von Hagens
im brandenburgischen Guben gefertigt. Die Einrichtung dort umfasst
neben der Plastinationswerkstatt auch eine anatomische Ausstellung
und einen Showroom. Hier werden vor Ort zudem Veranstaltungen wie
Kurse und Vorlesungen angeboten. Die in Guben gefertigten Plastinate
stammen zum Groteil von echten menschlichen Krpern, die durch
die Plastinationstechnik dauerhaft konserviert sind.

Prof. Dr. Eduard Borsiak und Dr. Vladimir Chereminskiy. Alle Anatomie-
Spezialisten, die auf eine teils 20-jhrige Erfahrung blicken, sezieren

mit akribischer Genauigkeit, um auch kleinste Details hervorzuheben
und die anatomische Authentizitt zu gewhrleisten. Seit Erfindung der
Plastination 1977 durch Dr. Gunther von Hagens arbeitet das Team
kontinuierlich an der weiteren Erforschung, Entwicklung und Verbesserung der Plastinationstechnik. Diese ber 35-jhrige Erfahrung steckt
buchstblich in jeder Faser der von Hagens Plastination Prparate. So
zeichnen sich smtliche Lehrprparate durch hchste Qualittsstandards aus. Die stete Weiterentwicklung der Kunststoffe ermglicht eine
Herstellung von Prparaten ohne jegliche Verfrbung, Schrumpfung

The permanent scientific team includes anatomists Dr. Edward Borsiak and Dr. Vladimir Chereminskiy. All anatomy technicians, many with
more than twenty years of experience, dissect to meticulous precision
to reveal the most minute details, revealing each particularity to ensure
anatomical accuracy. Since the invention of Plastination in 1977 by Dr.
Gunther von Hagens, he and his team have worked continuously on
further research, development and improvement of the technology.
These thirty-five years of experience is evident in each finely prepared
specimen by von Hagens Plastination. All teaching specimens are
characterized by the highest quality standards. The constant advancements in plastic chemistry enable specimens to retain their color, size
and texture. Many newly developed polymers and methods are used
exclusively by von Hagens Plastination.

More than 400 educational institutions around the world use Plastinates.
von Hagens Plastination teaching specimens are used at various universities such as the College of Dentistry at New York University and
Warwick University in Great Britain. Some of these institutions have
supplemented previous wet specimen dissection with Plastinates and
others have entirely replaced them. The results have proved positively
measurable in improving student training. This has been particularly
evident in smaller institutions.

Er rckt die Anatomie des Menschen in ein neues, greifbares

und vor allem anschauliches Licht: Gunther von Hagens ist
Mediziner, Wissenschaftler und Erfinder. Ein Vorwrtsdenker,
der den menschlichen Krper in beispielloser Weise fr Lehre
und Forschung zugnglich macht.
Dr. Gunther von Hagens has transformed human anatomy, to offer a new
perspective making anatomical specimens that are tangible and that
illuminate anatomy in a whole new way. Dr. von Hagens is a physician,
scientist and inventor. His forward thinking has enabled the human body to
become accessible for teaching and research like never before.
Gunther von Hagens, the creator of Plastination, began his medical

studies at the University of Jena in 1965. He was arrested after he
had distributed leaflets protesting against the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops and soon thereafter had tried to flee from
East Germany. Finally, in 1970, only after the West German government had bought his freedom as well as that of other political prisoners
was he able to continue his studies at the University of Lbeck, which
he completed there in 1973. In 1974, he received his license to practice medicine before moving to the University of Heidelberg, where he
completed his doctorate in the Department of Anesthetics and Emergency Medicine in 1975. He subsequently worked at the Institutes of
Anatomy and Pathology.
It was in Heidelberg starting in 1977 that he invented the basic technologies for forced infusion of anatomical specimens with reactive plastics especially developed for this purpose. It was also in Heidelberg
in 1978 that he founded BIODUR Products to market the respective
polymers and equipment; finally, he founded the Institute for Plasti-
nation in 1993. In 1995 he launched the BODY WORLDS, anatomical

exhibitions of real human bodies. BODY WORLD exhibitions have now
travelled globally and have been seen by more than 35 million people
worldwide. In 1996 he was appointed a visiting professor at the School
of Medicine in Dalian in China and Director of the Plastination Center
at the State Medical Academy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where he was
awarded the title of an honorary professor. Since 2004, he is a visiting
professor at the New York University College of Dentistry.
Gunther von Hagens wurde 1945 im damals zu Deutschland gehrenden Alt-Skalen geboren und nahm im Alter von 20 Jahren sein Medizinstudium an der Universitt Jena auf. 1968 geriet er in politische Gefangenschaft der DDR, wurde 1970 von der Bundesrepublik freigekauft
und setzte sein Studium danach in Lbeck fort. Dort legte er 1973 sein
Staatsexamen ab, erhielt im Jahr darauf die Approbation und folgte
dann dem Ruf der Universitt Heidelberg, an der er in der Abteilung fr
Ansthesie und Notfallmedizin promovierte.
In November 2006, he established the Gubener Plastinate GmbH, a

plastination laboratory in Guben, Germany.Set to be the worlds leading Plastination research, development and preparation facility, it will
also promote the cause of public anatomy by granting access to the
general publicto watch the preparation of permanently preserved, anatomical human and animal specimens. The Gubener Plastinate GmbH
is a natural extension of Dr. von Hagens thirty year career as an anatomist and advocate of public health and public anatomy.

So beginnt er 1977 mit der Entwicklung von Reaktionskunststoffen, die
eine forcierte Imprgnierung anatomischer Prparate mglich machen.
Bereits 1978 grndet er seine Firma BIODUR Products fr den Vertrieb von Kunststoffen, Hilfsmitteln und Gerten zur Plastination; 1993
entsteht das Institut fr Plastination.
Danach folgt ein weiterer Meilenstein: Gunther von Hagens erffnet

1995 seine erste KRPERWELTEN Ausstellung, in der echte anatomische Prparate gezeigt werden die von da an ihre Reise durch die
ganze Welt antreten, um Millionen von Menschen zu begeistern. Den
Lehrauftrag behlt er dabei fest im Blick. So wird er 1996 Gastprofessor an der Medizinischen Universitt Dalian in China, Direktor und Ehrenprofessor des Plastinationszentrums der Staatlichen Medizinischen
Akademie im kirgisischen Bischkek sowie Gastprofessor am College of
Dentistry der New York University.
Im November 2006 hebt Gunther von Hagens die Gubener Plastinate
GmbH aus der Taufe und errichtet damit das weltweit grte Plastinationszentrum, das sowohl Plastinationswerkstatt als auch Entwicklungsund Forschungseinrichtung ist.

There are five steps in the standard process of Plastination:

Embalming and Anatomical Dissection, Dehydration Forced impregnation in a vacuum, Hardening.

besteht aus 5 wesentlichen Arbeitsschritten:
Generally water and lipid tissues in the body are replaced by curable
polymers. Curable polymers used by plastination include silicone,
epoxy and polyester-copolymer.
The specimens rendered through plastination are durable, permanent,
odorless and non-toxic.
1. Embalming and Anatomical Dissection

The first step of the process involves halting decay by pumping formalin into the body through the arteries. Formalin kills all bacteria
and chemically stops the decay of tissue. Using dissection tools, the
skin, fatty and connective tissues are removed in order to prepare the
individual anatomical

4. Positioning
After vacuum impregnation, the body is positioned as desired. Every
single anatomical structure is properly aligned and fixed with the help
of wires, needles, clamps, and foam blocks.

5. Curing (Hardening)
In the final step, the specimen is hardened. Depending on the polymer
used, this is done with gas, light, or heat.

mit Gas, Licht oder Wrme gehrtet.
Dissection and Plastination of an entire body requires about 1,500

working hours and normally takes about one year to complete.

Arbeitsstunden und ist nach etwa einem Jahr abgeschlossen.
1. Fixierung und anatomische Prparation

Zunchst wird durch Injizieren von Formalin der Verwesungsprozess
des Krpers gestoppt. Dabei werden smtliche Bakterien abgettet
und der Zerfall des Gewebes durch chemische Prozesse verhindert.
Schlielich werden Haut, Fett- und Bindegewebe mit Pinzette, Schere und Skalpell entfernt und die einzelnen anatomischen Strukturen
freigelegt.

2. Entwsserung und Entfettung

IIm ersten Schritt werden Krperwasser und lsliche Fette durch das
Einlegen des Krpers in ein Lsungsmittel wie Aceton herausgelst.
3. Forcierte Imprgnierung
Der zweite Schritt des Austauschprozesses ist zugleich Kernpunkt der
Plastination. Hier wird das Azetonbad gegen einen Reaktionskunststoff
wie Silikonkautschuk ausgetauscht und alles in eine Vakuumkammer
gestellt. Das Vakuum saugt das Aceton aus dem eingelegten Krper
heraus und lsst den Kunststoff bis in die letzte Zelle eindringen.

3. Forced Impregnation
This second exchange process is the central step in Plastination. During
forced impregnation a reactive polymer, e.g., silicone rubber, replaces
the acetone. To achieve this, the specimen is immersed in a polymer
solution and placed in vacuum chamber. The vacuum removes the
acetone from the specimen and helps the polymer to penetrate every
last cell.
Decomposition is stopped using formaldehyde.

The innovative method of Plastination preservation enables a significant improvement in anatomical research
and teaching through tactile, visual and authentic
characteristics.
Plastinates are dry, long-lasting, odorless and nonhazardous. They are durable and resistant allowing for
hands-on use.
The alternative to artificial models or wet specimens
The unique use of authentic human specimens presents an up close

look at anatomy in a way that cannot be shown with three-dimensional models of human anatomy. The detail and clarity of our anatomical
teaching specimens promote a deeper understanding of anatomical
relationships. This enhances the learning experience for the students, and leads to demonstrable results in learning. Understanding by
students is accelerated and the level of retention has shown to increase.
The alternative to formalin specimens
Often Plastinates are more revelatory than untreated anatomical

specimens in formaldehyde. Diseases such as cancer, arthritis and
Alzheimers disease can now be preserved and studied through real

The alternative to wet specimen dissection
Traditionally, medical students familiarize themselves with the human

body through a process of removal. First they remove the skin from
the cadaver, then they detach muscles from the limbs, and finally conclude by removing the chest and abdominal walls. After removing the
organs, the remainder of the body is to use their own rather telling
term-dissected down to the bones and ligaments.
In Plastination, the body is also first dissected. However, the method
makes it possible to create new types of specimens. When the polymers harden, muscles that would ordinarily be slack are firm, allowing
the body to be displayed in a variety of specific poses, either in its
entirety or in various stages of anatomical dissection. It is even possible to take a body that has been dissected and highlight specific
areas in various angles to offer informative glimpses into the body by
revealing structural relationships that would otherwise remain hidden.
Since specimens rendered through Plastination are durable and permanent, more complex and detailed dissection is worthwhile compared to traditional wet preparation.
Through these characteristics Plastniates can help to compensate for
reduced dissection periods, experienced in various programs.

Traditionell machen sich Medizinstudenten im Anatomie-Unterricht
durch Wegnehmen mit dem menschlichen Organismus vertraut. So
lsen sie zunchst die Haut der Leiche ab, entfernen dann Muskel um
Muskel von den Gliedmaen und ffnen schlielich Brust- und Bauchwand. Nach Entnahme der Organe wird, bis auf Knochen und Bnder,

Economic aspects
At many institutions, there is enormous economic pressure. Growing

enrollment numbers, larger class sizes and budget cuts have made
universities and other educational institutions face major challenges.
The use of plastinated specimens does not only increase the quality of
education, it has clear economic benefits: Due to their lasting durability, Plastinates can be reused year after year and therefore typically
recoup their costs after a few semesters.
Practical aspects
Many universities maintain their own body donation programs. Such

programs are time consuming and require a considerable degree of
organization and care with the appropriate administration. Due to rising costs, smaller universities may not be able to maintain wet specimen dissection or may need to limit it severely. Due to religious and
cultural restrictions, institutions is some countries have no possible
access to body donors. Plastinates are economically efficient teaching resources, as additions to traditional teaching methods, or as an
advanced alternative to wet specimen dissection.
Effective curriculum
Plastinated specimens allow precise preparation, planning and compliance of the curriculum. Certain areas of the human body, including
disease and deformities can be addressed and planned long ahead.
Unanticipated surprises such as collapsed organs or unwanted appearances of diseases in the studied specimen, as they sometimes
occur in the wet specimen dissection, are omitted. The teaching is
very effective and result oriented.

Plastiniertes menschliches Anschauungsmaterial ermglicht eine exakte Erstellung und Einhaltung von Lehrplnen. Bestimmte Bereiche
des menschlichen Organismus, aber auch Krankheiten und Deformationen, knnen geplant angegangen werden, unvorhersehbare berraschungen, wie sie in der Nassprparation vorkommen, entfallen. Damit

Der praktische Nutzen

Viele Universitten unterhalten eigene zeitaufwndige Krperspendeprogramme, die einen erheblichen Administrationsaufwand erfordern.
Gerade kleinere Universitten verzichten daher hufig auf die Nassprparation oder schrnken diese stark ein. In manchen Lndern entfllt
die Nassprparation gnzlich, da aus unterschiedlichen Grnden kein
Zugang zu Krperspenden mglich ist. Damit fehlt jedoch ein wichtiges
Element in der anatomischen Lehre. Hier stellen Plastinate eine sehr
gute Ergnzung dar, mehr noch, hufig knnen sie als vollwertiger Ersatz fr die Nassprparation eingesetzt werden.

All anatomical specimens stem from body donors who donated their bodies with willed legal consent in their lifetime, for the education of future generations. For over 30 years the body donation program has been the ethical
backbone of Plastination.
Administrator of the Body Donation Program
The Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg is the administrator of this

unique body donation program founded in 1993 by Gunther von Hagens. Currently this program has more than 13,000 body donors on its
donor roster, with more than 1,000 already deceased donor bodies.
The donors come from over 33 countries, with the majority from Germany (about 85%) and North America (about 10%).
The Tenet of Body Donation for Plastination

Body Donation for Plastination is not a contract, but a declaration of intent. The donor declares during his lifetime that his
body is not buried after death, but transferred to the Institute
for Plastination. In the consent form and a brochure providing
detailed information, the donor is informed about the future
use of his body, explicitly including the production of teaching
specimens for sale. The Institute for Plastination also organizes
regular meetings of body donors.
Motivation
The motivations of body donors are varied. At the forefront of
their thinking is often the request to serve medical education
after the death. Many body donors register after visiting Body
Worlds exhibitions. The Institute for Plastination in Germany assumes all costs for the transfer of donated bodies to our facilities. There is no further additional financial compensation. This
is to ensure that the decision for body donation is undertaken
with free will.
The independent Federation of body donors e.V. (bdk) was
founded in Germany in 1999. The association publishes three
annual Body Donation News issues, and provides information
about plastination and body donation online and at events, and
establishes contact with other body donors

qualified users. Qualifed users are defined as institutions or
individuals who use specimens exclusively for research and

Lay people can acquire true color prints in original size and
resolution from sheet plastinates. Blood vessel configuration
specimens that do not contain any human tissue, as well as
plastinates from plant and animal origin can be purchased by

Das Institut fr Plastination bernimmt in Deutschland die Kosten der
berfhrung des Leichnams in die Plastinationswerkstatt. Um die Freiwilligkeit der Krperspende sicherzustellen, erfolgt keine weitere finanzielle Entschdigung.

Skeletons and Skulls. The production of defatted and durable

skeletons requires much experience.
Instruction works best with a so-called expanded skull, as has been the
practice in anatomy education for over 100 years.
The skeleton from the Greek skeletos, meaning desiccated body

forms the scaffolding of the human body. Of the roughly 200 bones in
the human body, the skull is the most difficult to teach and to memorize.
The 22 individual bones of our expanded skull are initially separated

from each other and then reconnected with high-grade steel wire,
leaving equal spaces between the bones. This allows for a 3D view of
each single skull bone and grants an interesting interior view.
Skelette und Schdel. Die Herstellung von entfetteten, haltbaren

Skeletten erfordert viel Erfahrung.
Sprengschdel werden die 22 einzelnen Schdelknochen zunchst

voneinander getrennt und anschlieend auf Distanz zueinander mit
Edelstahldraht verbunden.
Das Skelett, griechisch skeletos fr ausgetrockneter Krper bildet das

Sttzgerst im menschlichen Krper. Von allen etwa 200 Knochen des
menschlichen Krpers ist der Schdel am schwierigsten zu lehren und
zu lernen.
Am besten gelingt dies mit einem sogenannten Sprengschdel, wie er
seit ber 100 Jahren im Anatomieunterricht im Einsatz ist. Bei unserem

Am fertigen Prparat knnen dann zum einen die einzelnen

Schdelknochen rundum betrachtet werden, zum anderen kann
die Expansion der Knochen im Raum so gewhlt werden, dass der
Betrachter die Knochen in seiner Vorstellung ohne Schwierigkeiten
wieder auf das Normalvolumen passgenau an den Bruchstellen
zusammenschrumpfen kann.
