BLACKENGLISH
DuringtheearlyyearsofAmericansettlement,ahighlydistinctiveformofEnglish
was beginningtodevelopintheislandsoftheWest Indies andthesouthernpart of the
mainland,spokenbytheincomingblackpopulation.Thebeginningoftheseventeenthcentury
sawtheemergenceoftheslavetrade.ShipsfromEuropetravelledtotheWestAfricancoast,
wheretheyexchangedcheapgoodsforblackslaves.Theslaveswereshippedinbarbarous
conditions to the Caribbean islands and the American coast, where they were in turn
exchangedforsuchcommoditiesassugar, rum,and molasses.Theshipsthenreturnedto
England,completingan'Atlantictriangle'ofjourneys,andtheprocessbeganagain.Britain
andtheUnitedStateshad outlawed thestavetradeby1865,butbythattime,nearly200
yearsoftradinghadtakenplace.Bythemiddleofthenineteenthcentury,therewereover
fourmillionblackslavesinAmerica.
The policy of the slavetraders was to bring people of different language
backgroundstogetherintheships,tomakeitdifficultforgroupstoplotrebellion.Theresult
wasthegrowthofseveralpidginformsofcommunication,andinparticularapidginbetween
theslavesandthesailors,manyofwhomspokeEnglish.OncearrivedintheCaribbean,this
pidgin English continued to act as a major means of communication between the black
populationandthenewlandowners,andamongtheblacksthemselves.Then,whenchildren
came to be born, the pidgin became their mother tongue, thus producing the first black
Creolespeechintheregion.ThisCreoleEnglishrapidlycametobeusedthroughoutthe
cottonplantations,andinthecoastaltownsandislands.Similarly,creolizedformsofFrench,
SpanishandPortugueseemergedinandaroundtheCaribbean.
