Two Malaysian coins add up to 30 cents. If one of them is not a 10 cent coin, what are
the two coins?
Solution
Be careful of what the wording says: One is not a 10 cent coin, but the other is. This is a
standard trick in the English language. When you say, one of them is not a 10 cent coin, it
doesnt mean that both are not 10 cent coins. The key strategy is to pay attention to the
wording and not assume anything. The mind gets lured into a process that seems natural. So
if you hear someone say, one of them is not a 10 cent coin, you may assume that the
person means that both are not 10 cent coins. But the statement one is not a 10 cent coin
does not imply that the other cannot be a 10 cent coin.
Solution
Translate words to math.
Alice was five years older than Terry is now translates to A = T + 5, where A is the age that
Alice was.
1
T = 2 (T + 5)
2T = T + 5
T=5
So, Terry is 5 years old.
Solution
Compare them by dividing both of them with 354 356.
354 357
355 356
compare with
354 356
354 356
That is
1
1
compare with 1
356
354
1
You know that 354 is greater than
1
1
. Therefore, 355 356 is greater than 354 357.
356
Or
354 357 = 354 (356 + 1) = 354 356 + 354
355 356 = (354 + 1) 356 = 354 356 + 356
Since 356 is greater than 354, hence 355 356 is greater than 354 357.
Solution
Suppose the watch was originally RM 100.
After discounted 20 percent, it is RM 80. After an additional 30 percent discount
(RM 80 70%), it is RM 56.
Or, if it gets a single discount of 50 percent, it is RM 50.
So, a single 50 percent discount gives a lower price.

In the following subtraction problem, each letter uniquely represents one digit from 0 to
9. At least one digit is not 0. Find the values of A, B, and C.
ABA
CA
AB
Solution
A = 1, B = 0, C = 9
Read vertically downward from the right hand side:
A A = B. Therefore, B = 0.
A B C = A. Meaning that A 0 C = A. A must be 1 so that the answer is one digit. Hence, A
= 1.
10 C = 1. So, C = 9.

Solution
Method 1:
Measure 3 liters of water, pour it into the 5 liters container.
Measure 3 liters of water agarin and pour it into the 5 liters container until it is full.
So now, only 1 liter of water left in the 3 liters container.
Pour away the 5 liters of water. Pour the 1 liter of water into the 5 liters container.
Measure another 3 liters of water and add to the 1 liter of water in the 5 liters container, and you get 4 liters
of water.
Method 2:
Measure 5 liters of water, pour it into the 3 liters container. 2 liters of water left.
Pour away the 3 liters of water. Pour the remaining 2 liters of water into the 3 liters container.
Measure another 5 liters of water and pour it into the 2 liters of water just now until it becomes 3 liter. So
now you have 4 liters of water left in the 5 liters container.
