LITURGY OF THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS
THE LITURGY
OF THE
PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS
The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts or Presanctified Liturgy is a

Liturgical Service for the distribution of the Holy Gifts on weekdays
during Great Lent the partaking of the Life-giving, Salvific Body and
Blood of Christ our Saviour Holy Eucharist.
Because Great Lent is a Season of Repentance, Fasting and intensified
Prayer, the Eastern Orthodox Church regards more frequent reception of
Holy Eucharist as being especially desirable during this preparatory
period before Holy Week and Pascha.
However, the Divine Liturgy has a Festal character, which is not in keeping
with this solemn Season of Repentance, Fasting and profound Prayers.
Thus, the Presanctified Liturgy is celebrated instead of the usual Divine
Liturgy of St John Chrysostom or St Basil the Great, which is only
performed on Saturdays and Sundays throughout Lent.
Although it is possible to celebrate this Holy Service on any weekday of
Great Lent, the Presanctified Liturgy is prescribed to be celebrated
only on Wednesdays and Fridays of Great Lent, Thursday of the Fifth
Week of Lent when the Great Canon of St Andrew is read and
Monday to Wednesday of Holy Week.
Common Parish practise is to celebrate the Presanctified Liturgy on as
many of these days as possible.
During Great Lent, many Orthodox Faithful Fast from midnight and
sometimes the entire workday strictly abstaining from eating or
drinking anything after the morning meal, until they break the Fast with
Holy Eucharist at the Evening Service of the Presanctified Liturgy- the
anticipation of which helps them with this rather difficult Ascetic
Discipline (that not all of us can manage to do.)
The Presanctified Liturgy consists of Daily Vespers, combined with
additional Prayers and the Holy Mystery of Eucharist.
THE EUCHARIST ELEMENTS OF BREAD AND WINE HAVE ALREADY BEEN CONSECRATED AND
TRANSUBSTANTIATED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT INTO THE ACTUAL BODY AND BLOOD OF
CHRIST DURING THE DIVINE LITURGY OF THE PREVIOUS SUNDAY AND RESERVED for
the week day Presanctified Liturgies.
When UNCONSECRATED WINE is added to the Presanctified Gifts, it too BECOMES
SANCTIFIED AND TRANSUBSTANTIATED INTO THE LIFE-GIVING BLOOD OF CHRIST.
The Presantified Liturgy is preceded by
the reading of the Typical PSALMS and
THE OPENING BLESSING Blessed is the Kingdom.. IS THE SAME AS THAT AT
START OF THE SERVICE OF VESPERS.
PSALM 103/104 Bless the Lord, O my soul is read before THE GREAT LITANY
is recited.
PSALMS 119/120 TO 133/134 are read before
Lord, I have cried to Thee, WITH STIHERA, is chanted.
THE ENTRANCE begins with the Priest censing the Sanctuary, the Icons, the
congregation, etc as usual.
If it is a Festal Service, the Small Entrance with the Holy Gospel held before
the face of the Priest takes place.
There IS AN EPISTLE AND A GOSPEL READING FOR THE FEAST DAY.
The beautiful hymn: O Gladsome Light... is chanted before
THE PROPHECIES from the Books of GENESIS OR EXODUS are read,
preceded by a PROKEIMENON.
When the Priest intones Wisdom! Let us attend! The Light of Christ
Enlightened all men.. WE PROSTRATE OURSELVES.

The second Reading is from the Book of PROVERBS OR JOB.

The second part of the Service consists of
the Hymn Let my Prayer be directed as incense before Thee..
the Prayer of St Ephraim and
the Litany, after which
we chant Now the Power of Heaven with us invisibly do worship...
while
THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS ARE CARRIED INTO THE HOLY ALTAR/SANCTUARY IN A
SOLEMN PROCESSESSION that resembles the Great Entrance at our usual
Divine Liturgy except IN ABSOLUTE SILENCE.
THERE IS NO ANAPHORA because these Holy Gifts have already been Sanctified
and Transubstantiated by the Holy Spirit.
THE PRAYER OF ST EPHRAIM THE SYRIAN is repeated
THE LITANY OF PETITION is proclaimed.
The Choir chants THE LORDS PRAYER, after which
the Priest intones: The Presanctified Holy Things are for the Holy.
THE PRIEST emerges through the Royal Gates with the Holy Eucharist and
INVITES THE FAITHFUL ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS ( who have properly
prepared themselves with Prayers and Repentance-Confession) to
partake of Gods Great Divine Banquet.
When all have partaken,
THE LITANY OF THANKSGIVING and
THE PRAYERS BEHIND THE AMBON are prayed, after which
THE FAITHFUL DISCIPLES OF CHRIST VENERATE THE HOLY CROSS.
If THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION 25 MARCH falls on a weekday of Great
Lent, THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM FOR THE GREAT FEAST IS
SERVED IN THE EVENING WITH VESPERS.
The Festal Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom for the Annunication is THE
ONLY CELEBRATORY LITURGY THAT IS PERMITTED ON A WEEKDAY OF GREAT LENT.
Furthermore, THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS WOULD BE RESERVED FROM THE FESTAL
LITURGY if there is a Presanctified Liturgy during that same week.
Unlike the Holy Service of Vespers, THE LITURGY OF THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS
TAKES PLACE AT THE END OF A LITURGICAL DAY i.e. in the early evening.
Therefore, if it is celebrated ON A WEDNESDAY, THE VERSES OR STIHERON FOR THE
SAINT BEING COMMEMORATED IS CHANTED AT VESPERS ON THE EVE OF THAT DAY
I.E. TUESDAY EVENING.
It is also a transition to A NEW LITURGICAL DAY so at Lord, I have cried ... ON
WEDNESDAY EVENING, THE VERSES FOR THE SAINT BEING COMMEMORATED ON
THURSDAY WILL BE CHANTED IN ANTICIPATION.
However, WHEN THE PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY IS SERVED ON THE FEAST OF A MAJOR
SAINT OR HOLY MARTYR, THE VERSES FOR THAT FEAST ARE SUNG THE EVENING
BEFORE, as mentioned previously, EXCEPT FOR A FEW VERSES/STIHERA in
honour of the Saint/Martyr, WHICH ARE CHANTED AFTER Lord, I have cried...
on the Feast Day, at the end of the Liturgical Day when the Presanctified
Liturgy is served in honour of the Saint or Great Holy Martyr.
Consequently THE VERSES/STIHERA FOR A MAJOR SAINT OR MARTYR ON A WEEKDAY OF
GREAT LENT IS CHANTED ON TWO SUCCESSIVE EVENINGS.
Normally, the transition to a new Liturgical Day is complete with the
reading of the Evening Prayer: Vouchsafe, O Lord... but since the
hymns sung at Lord, I have cried... belong with some exceptions to
the new Liturgical Day not to the day that is drawing to a close from
the perspective Typikon, Calendar and Rubrics, the transition to the new
day is under way well before the Evening Prayer: Vouchsafe, O Lord...
Since THIS EVENING PRAYER IS NOT read during the Presanctified Liturgy or the
Service of Vespers with the Divine Liturgy, THE TRANSITION TO A NEW
LITURGICAL DAY IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL THE CONCLUSION OF THOSE HOLY
SERVICES.
For that reason, THE PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY OR VESPERS WITH DIVINE LITURGY IS
CONSIDERED TO BE TAKING PLACE ON THE DAY THAT IS ENDING and not on the
day that is beginning.
The significance of this is that if we receive Holy Eucharist on Friday at the
Presanctified Liturgy, and again at the Divine Liturgy on Saturday
morning, we have Communed on two separate days and thus we do
not violate the Sacred Principle that WE SHOULD ONLY COMMUNE ONCE A DAY.
The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was first documented by St Gregory the
Dialogist (540-604), who was the Papal Legate to Constantinople, who
recorded what was being practised at Constantinople, although some
believed that he was its author.
Whatever the Truth might be, St Gregory the Dialogist is Commemorated in
the Presanctified Liturgy.
The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is mentioned in the Canons of the 7th
century Qunisext Council i.e. the Council of Trullo: ... on all days of
the Holy Fast of Lent, except on the Sabbath, the Lords Day and the
Holy Feast of the Annunciation, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is
to be served. (Canon 52)
