WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4
'A Line In The Tar Sands' Book Launch
7:00 p.m.
Join Toban Black, co-editor of A Line In The Tar Sands: Struggles For Environmental Justice (Between the Lines / PM Press) for a
presentation and discussion about extreme energy struggles around the Great Lakes and beyond, with a focus on pipeline battles in our
region.
Toban Black co-edited and contributed to the collection. He is also an Associate Editor for the social movement journal Upping The Anti,
and a community organizer in Ontario. His recent activism has included the web project Stop Fracking Ontario.
The fight over the tar sands in North America is among the epic environmental and social justice battles of our time, and one of the first that
has managed to quite explicitly connect concerns for frontline communities and immediate local hazards with fears for the future of the
entire planet.
Tar sands development comes with an enormous environmental and human cost. But tar sands opponentsfighting a powerful
international industryare likened to terrorists, government environmental scientists are muzzled, and public hearings are concealed and
rushed.
Yet, despite the massive political and economic power behind the tar sands, many opponents are building international networks of
resistance, and challenging pipeline plans, while resisting threats to Indigenous sovereignty and democratic participation. Including leading
voices involved in the struggle against the tar sands, offers a critical analysis of the impact of the tar sands and the challenges opponents
face in their efforts to organize effective resistance.
Contributors include: Angela Carter, Bill McKibben, Brian Tokar, Christine Leclerc, Clayton Thomas-Muller, Crystal Lameman, Dave

Vasey, Emily Coats, Eriel Deranger, Greg Albo, Jeremy Brecher, Jess Worth, Jesse Cardinal, Joshua Kahn Russell, Lilian Yap, Linda
Capato, Macdonald Stainsby, Martin Lukacs, Matt Leonard, Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Naomi Klein, Rae Breaux, Randolph HaluzaDeLay, Rex Weyler, Ryan Katz-Rosene, Skihitowin Awsis, Sonia Grant, Stephen DArcy, Toban Black, Tony Weis, Tyler McCreary,
Winona LaDuke, and Yves Engler.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27
Demand Justice For Fast Food Workers Fighting Against Racial Discrimination
12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Outside McDonald's Restaurant
5316 Main Street
Williamsville, NY
In South Boston, Virginia, ten workers at three McDonalds stores were fired last year after facing a pattern of racial discrimination and

sexual harassment. These McDonalds workers that were told by management, There are too many black people [working] in the store,
have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the company alleging a widespread pattern of racial and sexual discrimination and
harassment at three stores in Virginia.
Willie Betts, who was a cook at the South Boston McDonalds until he was fired last May, said: All of a sudden, they let me go, for no
other reason than I didnt fit the profile they wanted at the store. I had no idea what they meant by the right profile until I saw everyone
else that they fired as well. I worked at McDonalds for almost five years, I was on time every day at four oclock in the morning to open
the store, and I never had a disciplinary write-up. They took away the only source of income I have to support my family.
Fast food workers wont stop until they win $15 an hour, dignity at work, and the right to form a union.
Join the Coalition For Economic Justice this Friday at noon, and tell McDonalds that people in Buffalo wont tolerate this discrimination
and harassment, and stand with fast food workers who are fighting against injustice and for livable wages and fair treatment for all.

SATURDAY, APRIL 18
11th Annual Indigenous & American Studies Storytellers Conference
8:30 a.m. To to 5:00 p.m.
University At Buffalo
North Campus (108 O'Brian Hall)
Amherst, NY 14260
(Re)Writing Sovereignty: Visions of Change for the 21st Century.
As we enter the 11th year of the Storytellers Conference, we reflect upon how scholarship and activism has transformed within the field of
Native American Studies, especially as the current global crises encourage the recognition of multiple voices, perspectives, ideologies, and
epistemologies.
The visionary leadership of John Mohawk, Barry White, and Oren Lyons for Native American Studies at the University at Buffalo produced
an inclusive framework for interrogating how histories and knowledges intersect with current realities in the spaces of the community and
the university. We look to maintain this tradition in the coming conference and see this years meeting as a celebration and renewal of our
predecessors work and commitment to community, story, and scholarship.
This year, we welcome our main speaker Audra Simpson (Kahnawake Mohawk), one of the leading Haudenosaunee scholars of this
century. Simpson critiques the current definitions and articulations of sovereignty in order to create a pragmatic approach to decolonization
in our communities.
Our conference continues to embrace the interdisciplinary strengths of Native American Studies, Transnational Studies, and allied
scholarship while we contemplate their varied meanings. By utilizing these decolonial strategies, we are able to empower new narratives
and (re)write sovereignty in order to restore balance in our global realities.

PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO, INC. (PAPT)
************************************
Its Black History Month.Again!
By Karima Amin
I recently made a comment to someone about this month being Black History Month. In an incredulous tone, that person replied, Again!?
I was a little shocked as I was speaking to someone who was my age and college-educated who, for some reason, didnt realize that Black
History Month is an annual observance. Also, she had never heard of Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, The Father of Black History, who
founded Negro History Week in 1926. Initially, the response was lukewarm but the idea gained in popularity over the next five decades
and by the 1970s school administrations, religious institutions, fraternal organizations, city councils, and some state governments embraced
the importance of acknowledging the significance of the history of people of African descent. Canada and the UK also celebrate Black
History Month. Woodson died in 1950 after distinguishing himself as a historian, journalist, and author, most notably for Mis-Education of
the Negro.
I am always encouraged to see my history highlighted and I try, every day, to learn something new that I can share with others. Although
Woodson only designated one week for study and celebration, he spent a lifetime establishing the Association for the Study of Negro Life
and History (1915) and a journal, The Negro History Bulletin (1933) that still exist today.
At least once or twice yearly, Prisoners Are People Too takes the time to acknowledge Black History by inviting a guest speaker or
screening a film which invites us to take a look back at where we have been, to have increased understanding of where we stand today. This
month, we screened a film, The Black Power Mixtape -1967-1975 (2011), which is a documentary compilation of people, events, and
ideas that fueled nearly a decade known as the Black Power Movement. It goes back in time but includes the voices of contemporary
people who were influenced by the history.
If you were aware of what Black Americans were experiencing in the 60s and 70s, then you need to see this film. You will see that so
much of what is going on in this nation now has happened before. If you were a child in the 60s and 70s then you need to see this film to
know something of the history that was misinterpreted by media, often making the US appear benign and blameless and Blacks appear
responsible for their own oppression. This documentary will give you what the typical textbook leaves out.
Yesterdays frustration with the status quo that ignores Black humanity is still with us today. Yesterdays police brutality and subsequent
violence are still with us today. Yesterday racism, both overt and covert, are alive and well in the 21st century USA.

Climate & Clean Energy Writers Group

6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Church Of Buffalo
Alliance Room (2nd Floor)
695 Elmwood Avenue
Buffalo, NY
RESCHEDULED FROM FEBRUARY 2 DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
This month's meeting will feature a presentation from Aaron Bartley, executive director of PUSH Buffalo, on Energy Democracy: What
Can We Learn From Germany? Aaron recently traveled to Germany and witnessed entire communities that produce, maintain, distribute,
and sell their own renewable energy. Let's hear what he learned, and how PUSH Buffalo sees it applying to WNY!
As part of a public education and outreach project of the Sierra Club Niagara Group Energy Committee, we have set up a Climate and
Clean Energy Writers Group to encourage a stronger voice for local advocates in the regional dialogue on climate change and renewable
energy. We meet monthly to hear a short presentation on a relevant topic, discuss energy related news, letters and articles, and encourage
each other to write for publication on topics of interest.
We are seeking writers of all ages and are very interested in getting the word out via various media, including print and the internet.
You are encouraged at any time to write letters to the editor, op eds, blogs any way to express your opinion about climate and clean
energy issues.
There is no process required. If you would like us to help you with fact checking or editing, or any form of encouragement, please contact
billnowa@gmail.com
We meet the first Monday of each month. The monthly meetings are meant to provide stimulating information and a chance to talk together,
but if you cant make a given meeting, dont let that stop you from expressing yourself.

SUBVERSIVE THEATRE (ST)
************************************
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27 TO SATURDAY, MARCH 7
White Boy Othello
8:00 to 11:00 p.m. (Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays)
The Subversive Theatre Collective (Manny Fried Playhouse)
Great Arrow Building (3rd Floor)
255 Great Arrow Avenue
Buffalo, NY
Directions: http://www.subversivetheatre.org/directions/index.htm
This is not ancient history. This is not a historical curiosity. This is not an academic discussion. This is not something you read a hundred
textbooks to understand. This is here. This is now. This is in your face. This is not on the other side of the world. This is just down the
block. This is burning. This is suffocating. This is a punch in the gut. This is WHITE BOY OTHELLO.
For the fifth installment of our Black Power Performance Series, Subversive Theatre unapologetically presents our original adaptation of
Shakespeares incendiary classic OTHELLO. By flipping-the-script, pitting a white Othello opposite a black ensemble, our version seeks
to add to the already-explosive discussion of racial injustice in America today.
WHITE BOY OTHELLO slips defiantly back and forth between Shakespeares original text and much more Twenty-First Century forms of
street language to offer a leaner, meaner, edgier, and unrelentingly urgent re-imagination of this timeless masterpiece. Developed

collectively by the ensemble, the cast adds their own real life stories to root this production firmly in here and now and build a reality that is
all too rare in theatre.
Adapted and directed by Subversive Theatres Founder & Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman, this production proudly features the acting
talents of Jeffrey Coyle as Othello, Dee Perry as Iago, Candace M. Whitfield as Desdemona, Verniece Turner as Emilia, and Greg
Howze as Cassio.
The ensemble also includes Shabar Rouse, Leon Copeland, Marcus Thompson, Tashani Wiggins, and Mary Kate Lodick, with set design by
Joshua Robinson and lighting design by Hasheen DeBerry.
ADMISSION: $25 General / $20 For Students, Seniors, and Subversive Theatre members. Thursday night performances are Pay What
You Can.

ABOUT OUR BLACK POWER PERFORMANCE SERIES:
Each year we set aside one performance slot for a play that offers a radical perspective on race, resistance, and re-imagination. Now in its
fifth year, our Black Power Performance Series has grown into a crucial component of Subversive Theatres overall mission to make
provocative art that speaks to the burning issues of our time.
This program began in 2011 with our production of Oyamos I AM A MAN under the direction of Annette Daniels-Taylor. It continued
with our 2012 production of Lorraine Hansberrys Civil Rights Era masterpiece A RAISIN IN THE SUN under the direction of Victoria
Perez* who returned the next season to direct August Wilsons final play RADIO GOLF. Most recently we were honored to feature Katori
Halls controversial new work THE MOUNTAINTOP directed by Gary Earl Ross* in 2014.
In 2015, as outrage against racial injustice boils all across our nation on a scale not seen in decades, we feel our newest installment is more
urgent, more timely, and more important than ever. Come and find out for yourself.
