2. Now write a sentence or two that captures the main idea of the section you just read.
3. Next, collaborate with your teammates. Put the sections in an order that makes sense so
that the sections flow into a full article.
4. Check your arrangement by viewing the article on your iPad.
5. Working with your group, answer the following:
a. What is the author talking about? What is the main idea? What is the authors
purpose?
b. What evidence from the text supports the author and gives detail to the article?
c. Share your list of words from #1 above. Can your teammates figure out what they
mean? List words, phrases, or concepts that you and your team could not figure
out. Use the full article to try and piece the meaning together, if possible.
Team Tackle!
Assign the following roles to you and your teammates:
Skeptic: This person pulls apart the authors ideas and tries to find flaws. What holes
in their thinking or presentation can be found?
Clarifier: Takes the unfamiliar words, phrases, and concepts and writes them on the
white board.
Collaborator: Meets with other collaborators from other teams to discuss what was
learned.
Communicator (for teams larger than 4, there can be 2 collaborators):
Communicates the main idea of the article, the possible flaws (as found by the skeptics),
and the unfamiliar words to the class.
The Skeptics should come up with some possible issues and make note of them on the iPad.
During this time, Clarifiers should be writing the words, phrases, and concepts on the
whiteboard.
Collaborators should take information and meet with other Collaborators to exchange ideas.
Finally, information should be summarized to the Communicators to relay back to the class.
By the time you are finished collaborating and communicating, as a class you should be able to
answer the questions below.
1. What was the main idea of the article? What evidence from the text can you use to
support your response?
2. Thinking as a scientist, what could be done to prove or disprove the information provided
in the article?
3. What are some next steps for scientists studying this topic?
