The Back to the Future saga
Have you ever wondered how your parents met? Or how will your life be in 30
years? For Marty Mcfly this is a regular weekend as he travels back to the future. The
Back to the Future saga is a science fiction narrative comprised in a trilogy of films that
narrates the remarkable story of two friends as they travel through the past, present and
future. The saga is an incredible story, however as any great tale there are several
things, both positive and negative, that makes the saga one of the best in the science
fiction category.
The first film narrates the story of Doctor Emmet Brown, a wacky but noble
scientist and Marty Mcfly, an ill-tempered teen with a good heart, as both begin to
experiment with the doctors newest invention: a time travelling Car. Their task goes
awry as the doctor is killed by a group of terrorist fooled by him and Marty accidentally
sending himself to the1950s. In the 50s Marty meets with a younger doctor Brown and
both of his parents, his actions however thwart his parents relationship. Fortunately for
Marty, all matters are resolved and improved on time for him to get back to the future
and save the doctor from his demise. The second films picks up just after the previous
and focus in the attempts of the two protagonists to save the present by forwarding into
the past to prevent an event that started in the future. The problem is averted just as the
Car is zapped to the past by lightning and Marty is stranded again in the 50s. The story
of the third film begins the moment the 50s doctor manages to send back Marty to the
future just to meet Marty again. By the moment Marty arrives to the 50s doctor, he is
contacted by the doctor as he tells him he is safe in the old west and he has buried the

Car on a secure location, the 50s doctor helps Marty get the doctor, Marty manages to
get to the old west as the Car propulsion systems fail. Marty reaches the doctor and
both accidentally save Clara, the towns teacher who falls in love with the doctor. Both
the doctor and Marty plan their escape but as their window of opportunity dwindles the
doctor must choose between home and Clara, ultimately he chooses Clara and stays in
the old west, sending Marty alone. The moment Marty arrives home, the Car is
destroyed, having no chance to save his friend, Marty mourns him only for the doctor
and Clara to arrive in another time machine.
There are several factors that makes the saga one of the best in its class. For
starters the characters that at first glance look seem mundane are, in reality very
complex and human. Another worthy mention is the setting, by using local protagonist in
a story of such magnitude makes the public sympathetic to the story, and lastly the main
factor for the saga to be a success is the running gags that perspire through all the film.
Of course, as any good story, the saga has its mistakes. One fault that seems
recurrent are the inaccuracies, both in the past and future settings. The receptiveness of
the plots makes the story tedious at times. The detail that bothers the most is the fact
that the franchise never was fully exploited, even though the franchise generated over
900 million dollars on its run, the story could have generated even more.
To summarize, the Back to the Future saga is a great saga. The story, a unique
science fiction narrative, has the elements that make a good story loved by thousands,
however as any good tale. It has its errors that fortunately could be avoided. All in all,
the back to the future saga is one of the best, if not the best science fiction story ever.
