G1IF4
INTERFACE UNIT
APPLICATION

G1IF4
provides
two
RS485
communication ports. The first is for
communication between G1IF4 and
protection relays by IEC60870-5-103
protocol.

The G1IF4 is an interface unit which is

applied
between
protection
relays
(equipped with IEC60870-5-103 protocol,
maximum 10 units) and station LANs
belonging to a Substation Automation
System (SAS) as shown in Figure 1.

The second RS485 port, dedicated for

the interface of G1IF4 and TOSHIBA GR
relays, is used for monitoring and
maintenance by RSM100.

The main purpose of this unit is to

establish a communication link between
protection relays and station LANs
(conversion
of
IEC60870-5-103
to
IEC61850 protocol).

Furthermore, an I/O interface module is

provided to interface with non-numerical
protection relays and typically in-service/
out-of-service changeover for protection
function.

The Ethernet LAN and TCP/IP protocol

are used for communication to station
LANs, and its transmission medium is
100 Base-TX UTP cable or 100 Base-FX
optical fibre.

The G1IF4 also provides the following

functions.
- Time synchronising
- Human interface
(LED x 14, RS232C x 1)
- Automatic supervision

HARDWARE

TIME SYNCHRONISING

The G1IF4 unit comprises the following

hardware modules:

A time synchronising function between

G1IF4 and a master clock is necessary to
realize 1ms resolution for each event and
time distribution to protection relays.

- Signal processing module with optical

communication ports

GPS (Global Positioning System) provides a

master clock and a GPS receiver distributes
the time information to each interface unit via
SNTP protocol over UDP/IP.

- Binary input module

- Binary output module with DC power
supply with two RS485 communication
ports

Normally, the internal clock in the G1IF4 is

synchronised with the SNTP server clock
and when the time synchronisation network
is interrupted, the internal clock runs locally.

The hardware block diagram is shown in

Signal processing module

Microprocessors and communication control

circuits for the station LAN are integrated
into one module as a signal processing
module. 100Base-TX and 100Base-FX for
LAN I/F are provided. Either of them can be
activated by setting.
A 64-bit RISC processor is used to perform
dedicated functions in the G1IF4.

- Two fixed logic Light Emitting Diodes

(LEDs) and twelve configurable logic LEDs
The two fix logic LEDs are used to display
the following signals:
- IN SERVICE
- ALARM
The colour of twelve configurable logic
LEDs can be selected from among red,
green and yellow respectively.

The binary input module, type DIC4,

provides 39 photo-coupler circuits for binary
input signals.

- RS232C port for PC communication

The configuration tool provides the following

functions:

Binary output module

The binary output module, type DIOV1,

provides 13 auxiliary relays for binary output
signals including one for alarm signals with
two RS485 communication ports and local
HMI. The power supply circuit (DC to DC
converter circuit) is also mounted in the
DIOV1 module.

CONFIGURATION TOOL

- IEC61850 data modelling

- IEC60870-5-103 data assigning
- External/internal device data configuration

AUTOMATIC SUPERVISION

Automatic monitoring function

The automatic monitoring function detects

failures that might cause unwanted operation.
Monitored items include, but are not limited
to:
- Binary input and output circuits
- Communication circuits for the station LAN,
IEC60870-5-103 transmission network
- Processor (Watch Dog timer)
- DC power supply circuit

Alarms

When failures are detected by automatic

monitoring, the ALARM LED on the front
panel is turned on and also detailed failure
information is transmitted to station level
control equipment as event data.
The unit failure of the interface unit is
displayed on the workstation of the station
level, and detail of it is also displayed on the
local HMI.
