Keep it Local
W elcome to the first issue of The YES Mag Directory, your local
independent business guide. The purpose of this monthly magazine is to serve you,
the residents of Conwy, and to support the local businesses that operate in or close
to the area. Studies show that people like to buy ‘on their doorstep’ whenever they can, and now you have a
reference guide to enable you to do just that.
In addition to featuring local businesses and trades, you will see there is plenty of useful information. and more
to come over the following months as the directory grows. However, we certainly don’t have the exclusive on
good ideas, so if there is anything you would like to see featured, do please call or e-mail your suggestions. We
would particularly like to include any community news.
Each month we will run special business features giving you more information about some of the companies that
advertise. This month we are featuring The Queen Victoria, Church Walks, which has recently been refurbished
and Chernobyl Children. The directory will be delivered every month into two alternating areas of Conwy .
If you like this directory and would like to see it continue, then please help us by supporting the businesses that
appear. When you do call them, please make sure you mention YES Mag. Finally, if you own a business in the
area, then you should be advertising with us. Our advertising rates are really good value – we don’t even charge
VAT!

Chernobyl Children Live Line is a national charity that helps children living in Belarus who are suffering from
the effects of low-level radiation from the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986. Belarus received 70% of the
radioactive fall-out ninety times greater than that created by the Hiroshima bomb.
A Chance for Longer Lives
Children-even those born long after the accident—are still suffering. Their immune
systems have been damaged, leading to extreme susceptibility to various types of
cancers, colds, flu, constant headaches, dizziness and sore throats.
Our charity brings some of these children to the UK to live in our homes for one month .
Our uncontaminated food, water and fresh air greatly improve their immune systems.
Even this short time away from Belarus is proving to boost their immune systems so they
have up to 60% reduction in radiation levels on their return home. We are looking for
homes in the Conwy Area
On 14th June 28 children, boys and girls age 10-12 will be looking for homes & clothing
or donations of money for shoes or trainers.

F
ebruary was named after the Latin term februum which means purification, via
the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old Roman Calendar
January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calen-
dar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were added
by Numa Popilious about 700 BC. February remained the last month of the calendar year
until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BC), when it became the second month. At cer-
tain intervals February was truncated to 23 or 24 days and a 27-day intercalary month,
Intercalaris was inserted immediately after February to realign the year with the seasons.
Under the reforms that instituted the Julian Calendar Intercalaris was abolished, leap
years occurred regularly every fourth year (after a few years of confusion), and in leap
years February gained a 29th day. Thereafter, it remained the second month of the calen-
dar year, meaning the order that months are displayed (January, February, March, …,
December) within a year-at-a-glance calendar. Even during the Middle Ages, when the
numbered Anno Domini year began on March 25 or December 25, February continued
to be the second month whenever all twelve months were displayed in order. The Gre-
gorian Calendar reforms made slight changes to the system for determining which years
were leap years and thus contained a 29-day February.
Historical names for February include the Anglo Saxon terms Solmonath (mud month)
and Kale-monath (named for cabbage) as well as Charlemagne’s designation Hornung.
In Finnish, the month is called helminkuu meaning "month of the pearl"; when snow
melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and as these freeze again, they are like pearls of
ice. In Ukranian, the month is called лютий meaning the month of ice or hard frost.
Patterns
February starts on the same day of the week as both March and November in common
years, and August in leap years.
Having only 28 days in common years, it is the only month of the year that can pass
without a single full moon. It is also the only month of the calendar that once every six
years and twice every 11 years, will have only four full 7-day weeks. Where the first day
of the month starts on a Sunday and the last day ends on a Saturday, this was observed in
2009 and can be traced back 11 years to 1998, another 11 years back to 1987, and 6
years back to 1981; and so on twice 11 years consecutively and once six years either
forward into the future or back into the past, unless the pattern is broken by a skipped
leap year, but no leap year has been skipped since 1900 and no others will be skipped
until 2100. A year of this kind would be a common year starting on Thursday It cannot
happen in a leap year. 2004, which was a leap year, would have observed this format had
it been a common year.
Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th
by many people throughout the world. In the English-
speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers
express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s
cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The
holiday is named after two among the numerous Early
Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became asso-
ciated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer
in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly
love flourished.
The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion
valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest
card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates
that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women
