Lants Lines
[Jesus said,] and whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they
disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they
have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your
face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18 (NRSV)
As I write these lines, we have just experienced two weekends of disruption due to winter weather
we had to cancel our officers retreat on February 21 and our Lenten program on March 1. The rain is
coming down now, but were told it may turn to ice or more snow tomorrow. For relief, we can turn
to a little country music. I offer for your enjoyment the following lyrics made popular by The Whites,
who were featured on the soundtrack album for O Brother, Where Art Thou?:
Theres a dark and a troubled side of life.
Theres a bright, theres a sunny side, too.
Tho we meet with the darkness and strife,
The sunny side we also may view.
[chorus] Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side.
Keep on the sunny side of life.

It will help us evry day; it will brighten all the way

If well keep on the sunny side of life.
The season of Lent is penitential and contemplativea time when we reflect prayerfully on our lives,
considering how we might improve our discipleship. But it is not a time when we beat ourselves up
and put on a sad face, as if to show how sorry we are that we are such worthless Christians. While in
the quotation above Jesus was probably focused mainly on the problem of hypocrisy, I think a secondary purpose may have been to encourage folks to focus on the joy of life with God. Yes, there is a
dark and troubled side of life, but (praise God) we do not have to dwell there. Because of the light of
Christ, and the forgiveness we receive through his great work on our behalf, we can always keep on
the sunny side. Indeed, Jesus also said, While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may
become children of light. (John 12:36 NRSV) If we find things in our lives of discipleship that need to
be changed, we do not linger in regret over those past shortcomings, but rather we rejoice that
through the Holy Spirit we receive constant support for doing better.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for delivering me from the oppression of thinking that my shortcomings define
who I am; help me be the disciple that you know I can be. Amen.

Thank Yous
Dear Church friends,
Thank you all for the get well
cards, phone calls, and food that
has been sent for me while I was
recovering. Those were great
cheer ups for the last two weeks
and I feel stronger each day! My
family in Korea was also very
touched and they appreciated
your kind thoughts and prayers.
Thank you very much.
