Hello,I want to use CAT 6 cable between gigabit switch and IP network Camera 2 Mega
Pixels ,whats is the maximum distance in order to not have losses of video quality?

Hi Constantinos,
In general, you do not need a gigabit link for 2MP camera, 100 mbit/s is more than
enough. Also, the Ethernet cable length restrictions have nothing to do with the video
quality and would be applicable to any data transferred through that Ethernet link. You
should be fine if you cable below 100 m.

It doesn't work that way, the signal does not "tail off" with distance. Digital video
transmission functions like digital TV; either it works, or you get nothing. The specified
maximum reach is 100M, and if you go beyond that, there may be data packet
losses. There are various types of distance extenders on the market, but again you should
stay within the specified distance as a design principle. The number of 2MPcameras you
can handle wwith 1GB/s is large, but the maximum will be determined by compression,
image rate, scene activity, GOP ratio, and so on.

Well if you use CAT6 cable, there is possibility to get maximal length even 150meters.
Of course in theoretical - there should be maximum 100 meters.

But in practical - many times i used cat6 cable and send LAN signal even for 120-130
meters without problem. Even i send POE for 120meters without problem.

Good design practice should always respect the sepcifications, otherwise performance
cannot be guaranteed. Moreover, if the project requires to be signed off, that may be
refused, and the installer will not get paid.

I have seen CAT5e cabling used for a camera almost 220 meters away from the closest
switch but it's really not a good idea. There is a certain amount of packet loss inherent in
excessively long network cable runs. In the case of the camera mentioned it would
occasionally lose connection to the network and have to be restarted before connectivity
could be restored.
If you have a long distance you could use repeaters or extenders but I really hate them.
They're hard to document and they're flakey. When they eventually need to be restarted
(and they will) you now need to find the damn thing squirreled away in some cable tray
or access panel. When one of them fails (and they will) you need to replace it with the
same model or the repeater at the other end won't communicate or else replace them both.
A better solution would be an analog to IP encoder connected to an analog cable
somewhere. Now your camera can be 1500 meters away and you won't have any
problem.

Cable vendors plan on 100m, that's a 90m channel with 5m of patch cable at each end.

90metres on the horizontal and 10m patching (5m either side). These are the standards for
networking. If your using PoE then stick to vendor guidelines but i would imagine it will
as above.

If you were to use something akin to a network extender such as products from veracity,
you would be able to reach much greater distances. Without the extenders going beyond
100 meters would cause your available bandwidth to decrease with distance.

you can use veracity products which i tend to use. You can achieve 600m on CAT6 with
full PoE as well

100 meters for cat5 or 6, Its recommended to have 90 meters max 2point cable distance
and 10m for patching on both points

Max recommended distance between switch to IPC is 100m. Margins of +10% are
workable but the outputs begin to drop if the length exceeds 100m Also there are many
versions of GB switch are available. You need to check the total throughput of the switch
as well. There are 24 Port GB switch with 1.6 GBps total thorughput and then it goes
higher upto 20 Gbps.
If you are using a PoE type IPC, then you also need to check the total power budget
required for the IPC. Total Power Budget of the Switch should exceed the sum total of
power required by all IPC.

Ethernet Specification is 100M link. As detailed here
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_6_cable#Maximum_length) Roger is correct that
your design should adhere to specifications. That is what manufacturers and end users are
going to be using for that asset in the future.
There are devices and stories of I have see "X" this project. The longer you do this you
will see amazingly questionable decisions. Just because someone did it, doesn't make it a
standard.

based on the OP question "I want to use CAT 6 cable between gigabit switch and IP

given. If the OP wants options to go farther. Someone might want to ask.

Hello, based on the Ethernet Standard definitely, it has to be 100 meters. because as far as
IP camera is performed on the Ethernet, for IEEE 802.3 100Mb/s standard regardless of
your application and The cable category you should used to maximum 100m as a direct
link so no video quality loss and of course without using any repeater or other active
devices.
