WHY: Now, for some background on myself, I am a career Firefighter Paramedic with over 20 years on the job,
seeing firsthand the devastation this disease inflicts on children. They must inject insulin daily, constantly checking
their Blood Glucose through finger sticks, and knowing everyday that tomorrow holds the same routine. With a
member of our club, himself a Type 1 Diabetic, there was no question what our “calling” was to raise money to
find a cure.
We hear a lot these days about juvenile diabetes: We hear about the dramatic increase in children being
diagnosed; we hear about how the lives are changed for the parents and children who struggle daily with the
disease; we hear about the long‐term complications for those children as they grow in to adulthood. Unlike type 2
diabetes, there is nothing that these children can do to prevent or control their disease. It’s a sad story that can
deeply affect all of us – especially those of us who know someone with juvenile diabetes.
