    RejuvenatedbytheBJPsroutintheDelhiAssemblyelectionsandNitishKumarsreturnasChiefMinisterofBihar,
    theOpposition,adayaheadofParliamentsbudgetsession,remainedunwillingtocooperatewiththegovernment,
    especiallyonthepassageoftheordinancesthatarepriorityonthegovernmentslegislativeagenda.
    AtanallpartymeetingconvenedbyParliamentaryAffairsMinisterM.VenkaiahNaiduonSunday,theOpposition
    leadersreiteratedthattheordinanceroutewasunacceptable.Thebudgetsgeneralandrailwaystheystressed,
    shouldtakeprecedenceovereverythingelseinthissession.
    However,thegovernment,itislearnt,istryingtobrokeradealwiththeCongressinreturnforsupportonthe
    insuranceordinanceintheRajyaSabha.Ithaspromisedtomakenecessarychangesinthelandordinance.Theother
    fourordinanceswillbetakenupintheLokSabha,givingthegovernmentanedgeitcangetthempassedinthe
    LowerHouseandeveniftheyarerejectedintheUpperHouse,thegovernmentcan,technically,callajointsessionto
    pushthemthrough,thoughitwouldhavetobeoneatatime.
    Expectingatoughsessionahead,theNDAgovernmenthasalreadylaunchedacharmoffensiveagainsttheOpposition.

    UttarPradeshtoattendapreweddingceremonythatunitedthefamiliesofRJDleaderLaluPrasadandSamajwadi
    PartysupremoMulayamSingh.Finally,atSundaysallpartymeeting,Mr.ModisoughttheOppositionscooperation,
    promisingtoaccommodateitsconcerns.
    ThegovernmentsconciliatoryapproachwasalsoondisplayearlierinthedaywhenMr.NaidudrovedowntoCongress
    presidentSoniaGandhisresidencetoseekthecooperationofthelargestOppositionpartyincarryingoutthe
    legislativebusiness.Heassuredherthatthegovernmentwaswillingtowalktheextramiletoaccommodatethe
    Opposition.
    Simultaneously,CabinetMinistersRajnathSingh,SushmaSwarajandBirenderSinghmetrepresentativesoffarmers
    organisationsaswellasofRSSaffiliateBharatiyaKisanSangh,whoare
    opposingtheordinanceonlandacquisition.

    Attheallpartymeeting,theOppositionmadeitclearthatithadno
    intentionofrelentingonthelandordinance.Indeed,thefirsttwodaysof
    thesessionwillseethelandordinancebeingraisedbothonthefloorof
    ParliamentaswellasoutsidewithactivistAnnaHazareprotestingonthe
    issue.CongressvicepresidentRahulGandhiwillalsoleadaprotestat
    JantarMantaronFebruary25.
    JD(U)presidentSharadYadavsaiditwouldbeafighttothefinishashe
    lashedoutatthegovernment,sayingithadmadethelandlawworsethan
    theonethatexistedundertheBritishrule.INLDleaderDushyantChautala
    demandedthattheproposedBilltoconvertthelandordinanceintoanew
    ActbereferredtotheStandingCommitteeofParliament.
    Mr.NaidulateracknowledgedtojournaliststhatsomeOppositionparties
    hadexpressedtheirreservationsagainstthelandordinanceandthatitneededtobeaddressedsincerelywithout
    unduepoliticisation.
    He,however,addedthattherewasbroadconsensusonfiveotherordinancestobeconvertedintoActs,astatement
    thatwaschallengedbyOppositionleaderswhoattendedthemeeting.Wespokeabouttheordinancesandpointedout
    thatthisroutewasunacceptableindemocracy.Debateanddiscussionmustprecededecisions,nottheotherway
    round.Thegovernmentdidnotdiscussthesubstantiveissuesintheordinances,itonlywantedoursupport,saidan
    Oppositionleader.
