Historical Perspective of Nursing

A. Florence Nightingale Did a lot of work cleaning up hospitals. Collected stats on pt deaths
and implemented ways to prevent pt death due to infection. Opened up first ever nursing
school in Britain.
B. Civil War read in chapter one. Clara Barton established American Red Cross during this
time.
C. 20th Century nursing became more research based. Earlier nursing was considered a
vocation not a profession.
D. 21st Century Explosion in education levels and science. Nurses active in politics and all
other aspects in life.
E. Social Influences women’s rights movement, human rights movements, what is going on
in the world; healthcare reform, job losses, etc… Bioterrorism, OSHA, JACHO, litigious
natures of job.
Profession

A. Extended education
B. A theoretical body of knowledge leading to defined skills, abilities, and norms
C. Provides specific service (altruistic)
D. Autonomy in decision making and practice Some argue that nursing is not autonomous
due to nature of job. It is autonomous in a lot that the nurses do.
E. Ethical codes and a culture of self regulation professionals usually agree to practice under
a shared set of standards.
What is the Difference?
A. Values
1. Relative worth, importance, utility.
2. Effect behavior
3. Tend to use your time and money on things you value.
B. Morals
1. Tend to be personal beliefs about what is right and wrong.

1. Tend to be codified into codes of professions

A. Integrity
1. Being honest in all situations and interactions.

1. Demonstrates ability to accept people and situations that differ from you.
C. Interpersonal Relationships
1. Provides support and is empathetic in interactions with peers, patients, etc…

1. Take inititiative

1. Be there when you are supposed to be. Be dependable.

1. Good attitude.

1. Maintaining composure in all situations.

Professional Behavior

A. Code of Ethics ensures that nurses perform duties as written in policies.


B. Accountability being held responsible professionally and legally for care you provide.
C. Responsibility
1. Competence making sure you can perform the skills you set to do
2. Judgment the use of available evidence or facts to make socially acceptable
choices.
D. Confidentiality
E. Veracity the accuracy and conformity to the rules
F. Nonmaleficence above all don’t hurt patient!

A. Written and Updated by the American Nurses Association


B. It is a statement of the ethical obligations and duties of every individual who enters
the nursing profession
C. Nonnegotiable ethical standard agree to follow this code when going into nursing.

1. Have to delegate to these individuals. You are still responsible for the outcome of
care provided. Cannot delegate tasks that require your skills. Evaluation and
communication is key.
2. There are some community classes but most of the time the hospital or nursing
home trains them.
