Joan Durcan worked for 40

years as the assistant to Kevin

of
International
Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA)
at Fordham University. A dear
friend to CIHC and IIHA

positions of service and the
people for whom they cared.

About the CIHC

The CIHC is an established
501(c)(3) public charity that aims
to professionalize training within
the humanitarian sector.
By
covering a wide variety of topics
including disaster management,
mental health issues, and
negotiations, the CIHC programs
equip aid workers with the tools
necessary to respond thoughtfully and effectively in conflict
and post-conflict settings. The
CIHC partners with the Institute
of International Humanitarian
Affairs (IIHA) at Fordham
University in order to bring the
field of humanitarian work to an
academic setting.

The International Diploma in

Humanitarian Assistance

The Scholarship
The CIHCs flagship course, the
International
Diploma
in
Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA),
offers aid workers the opportunity
to share best practices and
professionalize their work in
service of the most vulnerable. In
honor of Joan Durcan, who spent
a life of service caring for those
engaged in international service,
the CIHC has created a
scholarship fund in her name to
support candidates in pursuit of
the IDHA. Interested candidates
can apply for this scholarship
alongside registration for the
course.

In an attempt to create a comprehensive

training course that reflects the complexity
and intensity of the conditions faced by
humanitarian workers, the IDHA has been
designed as an intensive four-week training
course, including more than 200 hours of
lectures, presentations, debates, and group
work. The intensity and duration of the
course enables aid workers who are active
in the field to attend with minimal
disruption to the operations with which
they are involved.
Teaching methods include lectures, case
studies, seminars, and scenario exercises.
This multidisciplinary course covers the
full range of topics that are involved in
humanitarian
programs
and
spans
theoretical and practical aspects of
humanitarian affairs.
The IDHA is held three times each year in
rotating locations around the world and
applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
The fee for the course is USD 5,500, which
includes tuition, fees, course materials,
lodging, and all weekday meals.
