Graphs and Charts

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. explain graphs and charts;
b. distinguish the different types of graphs and charts; and
c. analyze data present in the graphs and charts.
Graphs
A diagram representing a system of connections or interrelations among two or
more things by a number of distinctive dots, lines, bars, etc.

Types of Graphs and Charts

There are many types of graphs and charts that are commonly used for showing
business reports. These are listed as follows.
1. Line graphs: A line graph is a way of representing two pieces of
information, which is usually related and vary with respect to each other.
This is useful when comparisons are needed.
Example: The graph shows Sams weight in kilogram per month.

What was the highest value recorded?

Answer: 73 kilograms in the month of May
What was the lowest value recorded?
Answer: 49 kilograms in the month of
February
Did Sam's weight increase or decrease over
time?

Answer: Sams weight increases every

month

2. Pie Charts: A pie chart is a type of a circle graph normally used in

showcasing a wholesome quantity; we have to show that how this whole
quantity is broken into parts. The whole quantity depicts entire sample
space and the pieces of pie in the circle graph are called sectors.
Example: A survey was conducted by a pizza parlor to their customers and
asks what their favorite pizza is topping. If the total of the customers in the
pizza parlor were 250, how many customers choose sausage and how
many customers prefers pepperoni?
No. of customers = 250
Sausage= 15%
(250)(0.15) = 37.5 customers
Pepperoni= 50%
(250)(0.5) = 125 customers

3. Bar Charts: This is a type of chart, which contains labeled horizontal or

vertical bars showing a piece of information and an axis. The numbers
along the side of bar graph compose the axis. This is also called as a
histogram; Bar Graph is useful when there is a numerical comparison.
Example: The given charts show students in a class voted on their favorite
fruit
How many categories are in the graph?
Answer: there are 7 fruits categorized
in the graph
Which fruit had the most votes?
Answer: Apples
Which fruit had the least votes?

Answer: Pears

4. Pictograph: A Pictograph is a way of representing statistical data using

symbolic figures to match the frequencies of different kinds of data.
Example: The pictograph shows the number of varieties of apples
stored at a supermarket.
Use the pictograph to find the total number of
apples stored in the supermarket.
Step 1: The pictograph shows 14 full apples
and 2 half apples.
Step 2: So, there are 140 + 10 = 150 apples
stores in the supermarket.

General Analysis
Handouts are made for the students to have a guide in the discussion and as for
the teachers handouts are made because it is less consume in time writing.
Handouts are pieces of paper holding concepts and ideas of a certain topic.
In making handouts theres a lot of thing must consider and lot of things that are
commonly mistaken, first, the learning objectives should be suitable to the topic,
second, the information must be accurate and third, the content must be orderly
arrange and readable that the learners will understand. Disadvantage of
handouts were costly for some students.
Handouts are an instrument in giving the learners information they needed, the
students are responsible in understanding the handouts or self study and the
teacher is the one who is responsible in discussing the given handouts to the
learners.

General Reflection
I have realize, understand and able to create an instructional materials such as
handouts that are appropriate in the teaching and learning process in which I
could apply when the time comes I am now the teacher who facilitate the class.
The things that I have learn in making handouts were creativeness in making
handouts use of pictures and etc, perseverance to complete the work in time,
time management to finished typing handouts and most especially honesty in
creating field study; I have exerted effort in finishing my handouts to be passed
on time.
Handouts are tools in giving or sharing information to others, these were made to
have a self study for learners at home. In math, math teachers often used
handouts because they always consider chalkboard as the best instructional
material.
