Hymenorrhaphy or hymenoplasty or hymen reconstruction surgery is the surgical restoration of the hymen.

The term comes from the Greek words hymen meaning membrane, and raphe meaning suture. It is also

known as hymenoplasty, although strictly this term would also include hymenotomy.
Such procedures are not generally regarded as part of mainstream gynecology, but are available from
some plastic surgery centers, particularly in the USA, South Korea and Western Europe, generally as day
surgery. The normal aim is to cause bleeding during post-nuptial intercourse, which in some cultures is
considered proof of virginity.[2]

Varieties of the operation[edit]

The term may cover at least three significantly different types of procedure:

Suturing of a tear in the hymen such as might be caused by sexual assault, soon after the assault, to
facilitate healing.

A purely cosmetic procedure in which a membrane without blood supply is created, sometimes including
a gelatine capsule of an artificial bloodlike substance. This operation is intended to be performed within a
few days before an intended marriage.[3]

Use of a flap of the vaginal lining, complete with its blood supply, to create a new hymen. Patients are
advised to refrain from penetrative sex for up to three months following this procedure.

Availability and legality[edit]

Some hymen reconstruction operations are legal in some countries, while other countries ban all
hymenorrhaphy.[4]
In the United States of America, hymen restoration is available in private clinics and becoming more common.

Women Have Surgery to 'Restore' Virginity

In a world of extreme makeovers where human bodies are now fashioned to order, this may be the
ultimate plastic surgery. It is for women only. It is veiled in secrecy. And it fixes a tiny part of the
anatomy rarely mentioned in polite company.
You may know it by a variety of slang terms. Technically, it's the hymen, a thin membrane that partially
covers the opening of the vagina. A girl who has never had sexual intercourse is supposed to have her
hymen intact.
Now, a new surgical technique is giving girls with a past a new future.
"The hymen's a delicate membrane that separates girls from women," said Dr. Robert Stubbs, who
runs the Cosmetic Surgicentre in Toronto, where, in a simple, half-hour operation, he turns sexually
experienced women into surgical virgins.
The surgery is called hymen restoration a relatively simple procedure that stitches back together
what a moment of passion might have shattered.
Queen of Virginity
In New York City, the operation has created a new class of royalty: "They call me the Queen of the
Virginity, " says Cuban-born Esmeralda Venegas, who runs the Ridgewood Health and Beauty Center
in Queens.

Here, board-certified plastic surgeons repair the thin membrane, either by stitching the frayed ends
together or by adding a patch of tissue from the vaginal walls. Either way, it's a procedure that's a lot
easier and less dangerous than the usual nips and tucks women come here for.
But the psychic pain associated with the decision to undergo the surgery is immense. We met one
young woman, a 17-year-old we'll call Rosalita, who forced by centuries of tradition traveled
incognito to Venegas' clinic.
"I heard when I was young that all the girls that get married, they bled for the first time," Rosalita said.
For Rosalita, the idea that brides should bleed on their wedding night was very important.
"Yeah, that's important, because they know that you are a virgin," she said.
But Rosalita is not a virgin. She's come to the clinic to regain what she lost during a recent vacation
a moment of lust, she says, not love.
Rosalita is from the Dominican Republic and lives in New Jersey with her mother. She doesn't have a
boyfriend right now, but believes she'll never get married without at least the illusion of virginity.
Catering to a Culture of Machismo
She's not alone. Venegas says several hundred scared young women from many cultures Latinas,
Mideasterners, Chinese, Koreans have paid her $2,500 each to have their hymens restored. Sure,
it's a business, she says, but what's behind the practice makes Venegas angry.
"It's about machismo, 100 percent," she said.
In fact, the hymen is not a reliable marker of virginity. In many girls, it is torn or destroyed during active
sports. But that hasn't tarnished its allure. And even if it's fake, Stubbs is willing to go along with the
ruse.
When asked whether he believed that by restoring a woman's hymen he was restoring her virginity,
Stubbs said: "Well, what is virginity? Virginity is not well defined."
Necessary Deception?
But, in fact, a woman who's had sexual relations is not a virgin, and by restoring the hymen Stubbs and
other surgeons are allowing patients to be deceptive.
"Yes. Oh, I agree. I mean, I'm not saying it's not deceptive," he said. "But there are little white lies and
big lies."

Hymen repair: Restoring virginity

The hymen is a thin layer of tissue, a membrane that is usually intact in young women
(virgins) forming a barrier to the entrance to the vagina. In some cultures it is very important
for the hymen to be intact. Sometimes an operation is necessary to repair it.
Hymen repair surgery

Between week 7 and 12 of the embryo's development during pregnancy the gender of the
foetus is determined. In a male the genital walls fuse and form the scrotum and in a female
the labia minora and majora are formed (internal and external vaginal lips). The mucosal fold
at the opening which remains in the middle is the hymen. There is a wide variation in the
shape and opening in the hymen which is also age-related.

In sexually active women the remnants of the hymen are described as 'carunculae
myrtiformis'.

In 99.9% the hymen is formed in an embryo: this means that 1 in 1000 women are born
without a hymen.
In 44% of women there is no blood loss during the first vaginal penetration.

Research shows that many boys from Mediterranean countries place considerable importance

Restoration of the hymen

Alloplant
A tear-through biomaterial can be inserted. This is also a temporary measure, carried out
shortly before marriage.
Vaginaplasty
This is a 'larger operation' where an incision is made in the vaginal membrane and both sides
are pulled and stitched together. This must take place plenty of time before the wedding night
so that it has time to heal. The procedure is performed under intravenous sedation and on an
outpatient basis. The operation takes between one and two hours, and the patient can return
to work the next day. Dissolvable stitches are used.

Risks, Side Effects and Complications of

Hymenoplasty
1) Dizziness after the Hymenoplasty

Nausea and vomiting may be experienced, as a side effect of the Sedation Anesthesia or
General Anesthesia which is noted to be relieved as soon as its effect wears off.

2) Post-operative pain after the Hymenoplasty

Pain at/or around the surgical wound may be felt as soon as the anesthetic wears off,
which is relieved by pain medications prescribed (in the first 2-3 days). Occasionally, you may
experience itchiness, irritation or tension around the surgical wound.
You should take a rest to monitor the symptoms and should refrain from working because
it may cause bruising and severe pain. If you experience more intumesce and pain, please do not
be hesitant to come to see Dr. Vitasna.

3) Abnormal bleeding after the Hymenoplasty

Because of the use of small dissolving suture this may lead to the risk of postoperative
complication such as bleeding from the surgical wound, possibly caused by walking or other
activities.
Abnormal bleeding which may lead to blood clot formation is very seldom noted and
occurs in 1 out of 100 surgeries. In this connection Aspirin and other anti-coagulant drugs should
be avoided at least 10 days before and after the scheduled surgery.
If excessive bleeding from the Hymenoplasty wound occurs after surgery, all expenses for
services and treatment for this post-surgical complication will no longer be charged to you.
However, if the bleeding or other complications occur due to your non-compliance with the
doctors orders, you will be charged accordingly.

4) Abnormal vaginal discharges after the Hymenoplasty

After the Hymenoplasty procedure, you may have abnormal vaginal discharge or curd like
discharge as a result of vaginal fungi, possibly following taking antibiotic to avoid postoperative
infection, and needing anti-fungal medication or suppository.

5) Inflammation or infection after the Hymenoplasty

After the Hymenoplasty, inflammation or infection of the wound may occur because the
surgical wound is in the vaginal opening area constantly be prone to contamination with the
fluid from the vaginal tract, the urinary tract and the alimentary (fecal) tract.
Inflammation or infection of the wound may happen to any women who fail to follow the
instructions, follow the instructions incorrectly or have existing diseases such as diabetes or have
vaginal infection before the surgery.
Inflammation or infection of the wound may cause complications such as wound
deformation, suture mark (scar), or wound disruption leading to abnormal bleeding from surgical
wound.

6) Unsatisfactory results after the Hymenoplasty

This procedure may result in incomplete restoration of the hymen ring depending on the
womans former hymen structure. Since the hymen tissues are very thin, sometimes it is not
possible to completely fix the hymen ring, which the surgery requires Perineoplasty to obtain a
more satisfactory Hymenoplasty result. Perineoplasty helps decrease the wound tension to the
thin hymen.

The Hymenoplasty has limitations and cannot absolutely ensure results and satisfaction
because there are many other factors influencing the surgical result and satisfaction. In case of
unsatisfactory results, correction surgery may be performed as appropriate and possible. In this
respect, you and the physician should come to discuss for the solution together.
If correction surgery wound occurs from the complication of the surgery, all expenses for
services and treatment will no longer be charged to you. However, if the unsatisfactory results
occur due to the complication from your non-compliance with the doctors orders, you will be
charged accordingly.
