One day while a mousedeer was walking in the forest, he saw a big black
snake sleeping under the tree. When he saw the snake, the mousedeer was frightened.
When he wanted to run away from the snake, he suddenly fell on top of a tiger which
was sleeping not far from the snake. The tiger woke up and took of the mousedeer. He
told the mousedeer that he was going to eat him for lunch. Please dont eat me now,
said the mousedeer. I have something important to do.
Look, said the mousedeer. That is the kings belt. He asked me to stay here
and watch it while he was away in the forest. The tiger looked at the snake and said,
That is a beautiful belt. I need a belt like that. Can I wear it? He asked the
mousedeer.
Oh all right, said the mousedeer. So he picked up the snake and winded it
around the tiger. Then the snake woke up and saw the tiger. The snake twisted itself
tighter until the tiger couldnt breathe. The tiger asked the mousedeer to help him. But
the mousedeer turned and ran away into the forest.

One day a big ship was broken near a small island. There was only one man survived.
He was washed away to an empty island.
Every day he waited for help but no one came. He built a little hut from the
wood. One day after looking for food, he arrived home and found his little hut on fire.
The smoke rolled up to the sky. Everything was lost. He was very sad.
Early the next day, however, he heard the sound of a ship that was getting closer to
the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the man
to the rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied. The man thanked God for
the good luck. The bad thing made a good thing.

Long ago on the top of Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, there lived a dragon. He
owned a large and beautiful pearl. People believed that he controlled the weather with
it.
The emperor of Chine heard this and wanted the pearl. He sent his two sons,
Wee Ping and Wee San to Borneo to steal it. The princes, together with one hundred
soldiers, set sail for Borneo in twelve sailing junks.
When they arrived in Borneo they set out immediately to find the famous
mountain. Their journey up the rugged slopes of mount Kinabalu proved very
difficult. The dragon guarded his cave very fiercely and killed many of their soldiers.
Then Wee San had clever idea. He climbed a tall tree, so he could see the
dragons cave. He noted what time the dragon left his cave to hunt for food and what
time he returned to it.
Next he ordered his men to make a fake pearl and a large kite. He waited until
the dragon left his cave. Then he placed the fake pearl in a bag, slung it across his
shoulder and flew up to the mountain-top on the kite. He exchanged the real pearl for
the fake one and then his brother pulled his kite back to the ground.
The brothers quickly returned to their ships and set sail for China. They sailed
safely home. The Emperor was thrilled with the pearl and gave a big party to celebrate
his sons return.

The legend of the window witch of Girah is a favorite tale every Balinese. Long
ago when Air Langga was a king of the island, there lived a window called Tjalon
Arang. One day she gave birth to a baby in jungle. Tjalon Arang called her daughter
Ratna Menggali and she grew up to be a very beautiful girl. In spite of her beauty,
however no prince came to court her. The window became very angry at this. She
learnt the art of black magic and practiced it against her village of Girah. Many people
died in that village because of the black magic. The high priest Mpu Baradah found
out the cause of the deaths and sent his son to ask for the hand of Ratna Menggalis.
Tjalon Arang was happy with the offer. She put an end to the curse on Girah and there
were no more deaths. Soon after that the couple was married.
Tjalon Arang had given to her a lontar leaf inscribed with the teachings of
black magic. One day Ratna Menggalis husband found it and gave it to his father.
Then the priest deciphered the formulas to the witchs secret powers. She declared war
upon the priest. Their war was a struggle of sorcery. The priest finally proved to be the
stronger of the two. He cast a deadly spell which destroyed the window. Before she
died however, Tjalon arang ask Mpu Baradah to forgive her wickedness.

several times but the turtle kept swimming. Komala ran after it into the sea, she tried
to cacth it. Until then, she finally drowned and disappeared and all of the guards could
not save her. Now, people call the beach, Penyusuk.

Mayang always treated her badly. Mak Piah always instructed her to work hard and

clothes by the river, she saw a big snake approching. She saw the snake bleeding. Mah

Soon Mak Piah asked her daughter Mayang to go to the river, to find a
wounded snake. Mayang found and took it home. However, they didnt treat the snake
with love, so the snake bit them, which resulted in their death. Meanwhile, the snake
at Mah Bongsus house recovered. One day, Mah Bongsu didnt find it. Instead, she
found a handsome man at the spot where the snake was. Apparently, a wich had
turned the man into a snake. The man, who was actually a prince, asked Mah Bongsu
to marry him.Mah Bongsu agreed. Sinced then, people named the river where Mah
Bongsu found the snake Sungai Jodoh (Soul Mate River).

After a few years, Roro Anteng gave birth to a child and it happened every
year until they had 25 children. They lived happily and forgot the agreement. Then,
Mount Bromo erupted signaling that the gods asked the couple to fulfill their promise.
However, they didnt want their youngest son, Raden Kusuma, to be sacrificed to the
crater.
Raden Kusuma learned about the deal his parents had made. Meanwhile, the
lava from the crater had made the people living nearthe mountain suffers. As Raden

people suffering because of him, he went to Mount Bromoand sacrificed himself to

golden treasures. He took some of it and went back home. After that, he became a rich
man and his brother wanted to know how he became rich.
One day, his brother followed him to solve that mystery. Next day, the brother

The boss asked him how he knew about the cave. So, he told them the story.

After lunch they took a rest. The house maid went out and found 40 thieves in
the jars, so she boiled hot oil and poured it on their heads to kill them. After that, Ali

threw it away into a river. She did not know that the snail was actually an old and

Dewi Limaran. The witch put a spell on her and changed her into a golden snail. The
witch then threw it away into the river.
The golden snail was drifting away in the river and got caught into a net. An
old woman was fishing and used her net to catch some fish. She was surprised to see a

up in the morning, she was surprised that the house was in the good condition. The

The old woman approached her. "Who are you, young girl?" "I am Dewi Limaran,
Ma'am. A witch cursed me. I can change back as a human only at night," explained
Dewi Limaran. "The spell can be broken if I hear the melody from the holy gamelan,"
continued Dewi Limaran. The old woman then rushed to the palace. She talked to
Prince Raden Putra about her wife. Prince Raden Putra was so happy. He had been
looking for his wife everywhere.
He then prayed and meditated. He asked the gods to give him the holy
gamelan. He wanted to break the witch's spell. After several days praying and
meditating, finally gods granted his wish. He immediately brought the holy gamelan
to the old woman's house. He played it beautifully. And then amazingly the golden
snail turned into the beautiful Dewi Limaran. The couple was so happy that they could
be together again. They also thanked the old woman for her kindness. As a return,

Once upon a time, not far from a jungle, lived husband and a wife. The were
farmers. The were diligent farmers and always worked hard on the paddy fields. They
had been married for many years and still not have a child yet. Everyday they prayed
and prayed for a child.
One night, while they were praying, a giant passed their house. The giant
heard they pray. "Don't worry farmers. I can give you a child. But you have to give me
that child when she is 17 years old," said the giant.

Timun Mas then opened the bag and threw a handful of salt. It became sea.
The giant had to swim to cross the sea. Later, Timun Mas threw some chilly. It
became a jungle with trees. The trees had sharp thorns so they hurt the giant.
However, the giant was still able to chase Timun Mas. Timun Mas took her
third magic stuff. It was cucumber seeds. She threw them and became cucumber field.

ut the giant still could escape from the field. Then it was the last magic stuff she had
in the bag. It was a shrimp paste, terasi. She threw it and became a big swamp.
The giant was still trying to swim the swamp but he was very tired. Then he
was drowning and died. Timun Mas then immediately went home. The farmers were
