TheSigmaChiInternationalFraternityimplementsaholisticapproachtoeradicatinghazingthroughpolicy,
education,andaccountability.Wecarry
astrictzerotoleranceposition
whichservestounderpinourwork
onthesubjectwehaveinvestedsignificantresourcesintocreatingtopnotcheducationalprogramming
gearedtodriveculturechangeandwehaveheldeverymemberandchapterfullyaccountableforany
reporteddeviationfromourvaluesorpolicy.

Withregardtosexualmisconduct,ourapproachisidenticaltotheabovepolicy,education,and
accountability.
Ourpositiononthematterisquiteclearwewillnottolerateit.
Inthesummerof2014,
wehelpedlaunchtheFraternalHealth&SafetyInitiative.Theresultofthateffortisprogrammingwhich
educatesmembersoftheGreekcommunityaboutsexualmisconductandhowtopreventitwehave
deliveredthiscurriculumtothousandsofstudentsthisyearalone.Anymemberwhocommitssexual
misconductorsexualassaulthasbeenandwillcontinuetobeheldfullyaccountablebythefraternity.

PiKappaPhihasclearpoliciesandexpectationsintheareasofhazingandsexualmisconduct,andthe
fraternityprovidesourstudentswiththeeducation,training,andmatureadultguidancetomakegood
choicesandtounderstandtheconsequencesoftheirchoices.PiKappaPhiis<strong>unequivocally
opposed</strong>toallactsofhazingandsexualmisconduct.PiKappaPhiuses<strong>acomprehensive
educationalapproach</strong>withourmembers,officers,andvolunteersthatreinforcesthefraternity's
concernforhumandignityandmutualrespect.PiKappaPhialsopartnerswithourhostinstitutionsto
addresstheunderlyingcausesofhazingandsexualmisconduct.Whenchaptersandindividualmembers
areunabletoconformtotheFraternity'sexpectationsandstandards,PiKappaPhiaggressivelyinvestigates
andtakesappropriatedisciplinaryaction.

Theyrelookingforabalancedfraternalexperience,notsomethingwhereImjoiningadrinkingclub.

Certainlyaminorityofincidentscomparedtotheorganizations10,000undergraduatememberson128
campusesacrossNorthAmerica,oneneedlooknofurtherthanBetasrecordofchapteraccountability
whichiscoupledwithawardwinningeducationalprogrammingandmentorshipthroughitsMenofPrinciple
initiativetounderstandBetasreputationofleadership,responsibilityandpurposefulyouthdevelopment.

Likewise,Betasattitudeandphilosophytowardsexualassaultisbestexemplifiedthroughareallife
examplesuchasourChapterPresidentMitchellCoxattheUniversityofUtah,
whowasrecentlyfeaturedon

forourchaptersleadershipontheissue.AwardedwithasignificantgrantfromtheRobyn
McGrawFoundationfortheirsexualassaultpreventioncampusprogramming,thecultureofthatchapter
demonstratesBetasbeliefthat<strong>fraternitymenareuniquelypositionedtolead</strong>ontheissue
asaresultoftheorganizationalstructure,leadershiphierarchyandmanpower,andfraternityvaluesthat
includeacommitmenttothecommunity.

SigEptakeshealthandsafetyviolationsextremelyseriously
,includingallegationsofhazingand
sexualassault.Weexpectallofourstudentstobehaveaccordingtoboththeiruniversityspoliciesandours,
andweworkwithouruniversitypartnerstoremovestudentsorchaptersthatposearisktostudentsafety.If
anindividualmemberviolatesoneofthesepolicies,theyfacesanctionsincludingexpulsionfromour
fraternity.

In1991,ourBalancedManProgramreplacedpledgingwithanexperiencefocusedonequalrightsand
responsibilities,continuousdevelopment,andaccountability.
Weare100percentcommitted
tothis
experience,andweareunwillingtoallowchaptersthatposearisktostudentsafetytocontinuetooperate.

thoseactions.

Inaddition,anyindividualbehaviorthatdeviatesfromSigmaAlphaEpsilonsbeliefsdoesnotandshouldnot
reflectonothermembers,otherchaptersorotherfraternitymen.Whenincidentsarebroughttoour
attention,wetakeactionimmediatelyandwillnothesitatetotakecorrectivemeasuresorimposesanctions
onanymemberorchapterthatfailstofollowtheexpectationswesetforth.Similarly,wearecommittedto
investigatinganynewcasesorallegationsastheyarebroughttoourattention.

educationandtrainingthatcombatsbothhazingandsexualassaultinourcommunitiesandholdsour

Tofightthemostpressingsocialissuesfacingcollegecampusestoday:sexualandrelationship
misconduct,bingedrinkingandhazing,PiKappaAlphausesthreetrainerledprogramstoeducate
ourmembers.
DevelopedthroughtheFraternalHealthandSafetyInitiative,allprogramsfocusheavilyon
bystanderintervention,tohelpempowermemberstorecognize,diagnoseandmostimportantly,intervenein
potentiallyharmfulsituations.Eachprogramalsoemphasizesinformeddecisionmaking,evaluationof
risks/consequencesandchallengesmemberstorethinktheiractionsthroughthelensofourorganizations
values.

InadditiontofacilitatedtrainingatChapters,theFraternityhostseightLeadershipSummitsaroundthe
countryattendedbyover3,500undergraduatefraternityleadersannually.Generalsessionsateachsummit
includeextensivetrainingonourHealthandSafetyinitiatives.

allegationsofhazingveryseriously
andweconductaninvestigationintoeveryclaim.Ifwefindincidents
ofhazing,wetakeappropriateactions,sometimesresultingintheclosureofachapter.

EveryyearallBrothersandProspectiveMembersofKappaKappaPsiareaskedtocompleteahazing
workshop.InlightoftherecentTitleIXviolations,theNationalCouncilofKappaKappaPsihasrecently
takenstepstorenewourcommitmenttodiversityandrespectwithinourBrotherhood.
