StandardTestMethodforLaboratoryMeasurementofAirborneSoundTransmissionLoss
ofBuildingPartitions.Specimensareconstructedintheopeningbetweentwospecial
reverberationroomsconstructedsothattheonlysignificantsoundpathisthroughthe
specimen.Transmissionlosses(TL)aremeasuredatfrequenciesfrom125Hzto
4000HzandSTCiscalculatedaccordingtoASTME413,ClassificationforRatingSound
Insulation.
Inalaboratory,specimenstobemeasuredareplacedbetweentworoomsthatare
isolatedfromeachothersothereisnotransmissionofvibration.Oftentheroomsare
supportedonsprings.Thesketchshowsanidealizedfacilityformeasuringwallsound
transmission.Suchfacilitiesarealsousedforevaluatingwindows,doorsandother
elementsthatarebuiltintowalls.Afacilityfortestingfloorshasoneroomabovethe
other.

Notethatinalaboratorytest,theonlypathbetweenroomsisthroughthewallorfloor
beingtested.Thisisoftennottrueinbuildings.
Noiseisgeneratedinoneroomandthesoundpressurelevelsindecibelsaremeasured
inbothatseveraldifferentfrequencies.Thebandwidthforthemeasurementisonethird
ofanoctave.Thedifferenceinlevelsiscorrectedtoaccountfortheacoustical
propertiesofthereceivingroom.
Thequantitythatresultsisthetransmissionlossindecibels(dB).Thisrepresentsthe
lossinsoundpowerduetotransmissionthroughthespecimen.Thehigherthe
transmissionloss,thelesssoundpassesthroughthewall.
TheASTMstandardgoverningthesetestsisASTME90,StandardTestMethodfor
LaboratoryMeasurementofAirborneSoundTransmissionLossofBuildingPartitions.
Sampletransmissionlossresultsforsinglelayerwalls
constructedusingcommonmaterials
Thedipinthecurveforgypsumboardinthefigureiscausedbythestiffnessofthe
board.Thestifferorthickerthematerial,thelowerthefrequencywherethisdipoccurs.
Thinorlimpmaterialsdonotshowsuchdipsintheusualfrequencyrange.Thedipfor
theconcreteisnotobviousbutoccursaround100Hz.Plywoodandorientedstrandboard
(OSB)havedifferentstiffnesspropertiesdependingontheaxisforbending.Thismeans
thecoincidencedipisbroadandnotwelldefined.

TheSTCcontourextendsfrom125to4000Hz.Themeasured1/3octaveband
transmissionlossesarefittedtothecontourasshown,subjecttothefollowingrules:
Deviationsoccurwhenameasuredvalue(redbars)islessthanthecontour(blueline).
Thecontourisadjusteduntilsumofdeviations<=32andnoindividualdeviation>8dB.
TheSTCvalueisreadfromthecontourvalueat500Hz.
AsforTL,thehighertheSTC,thebetterthesoundinsulation.
