Blowfish Reading Program

This fun reading
program combines
books and baseball! Students are
encouraged
to read up to four
books between March 26 April 24 to receive free admission and special recognition at a Blowfish home
game. The school with the
highest participation rate receives $500 for new library
books and will be recognized
on field before their designated game. The designated
game for LMES will be
on Monday, June 15th.
Base prizes include...

FIRST BASE (1 book read) =

one ticket to our school's designated home game
SECOND BASE (2 books read)
= one ticket for the parent/
guardian to our school's designated home game
THIRD BASE (3 books read) =
the student earns a spot in the
pre-game Parade
HOME RUN (4 books read) =
one free hot dog and one free
Coca-Cola at our school's designated home game
Each student receives a Blowfish Bookmark and Reading Log
to track his/her reading progress.
The reading log is for students
to fill out as they read each book

over the selected 4-week period.

When the program ends, students
will turn in their completed
reading log to their homeroom
teacher. Mrs. Matney will then
send home a letter to those parents/guardians with information
on how to redeem tickets and
prizes. Please note that Blowfish
staff will not accept the bookmark as a "ticket" on the day of
the game like they have done in
the past. Tickets/prizes must be
reserved in advance by calling
or emailing the box office. Blowfish home games will
be played at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium located at
474 Ball Park Road in Lexington.

Notes from the

LEARN

LEAD

Have a wonderful
Spring Break and
remember the sunscreen! Here are
some sun safety precautions
to take for your family when
going outside in the sun:
The worst hours for going
out in the sun are from
10 AM to 4 PM. Its best
to avoid going out in the
sun during this time
frame because the suns
ultraviolet (UV) strength
is at its peak. If for some
reason you have to be out
in the sun at these hours
use the maximum amount
of protection that you
can.
A sunblock with an SPF
rating of 50 is the ideal

during these hours. Sunblocks are even stronger

than sunscreen. Nonprotected exposure during
these hours would increase your familys risk
of cancer tremendously.
When do we put on the sunscreen? Rub it on
half an hour before exposure to
the sun. Some
people only apply
it after going outside. This is a
mistake since it takes
time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen.
A common mistake that we
make is forgetting certain
spots when putting on the
sunscreen. So every part
of the skin that is exposed

should have sunscreen. Ears,

feet, behind the legs are places that we tend to forget.
Keep reapplying it every 2
hours. Especially if you go
into the water. Even if your
sunscreen is water resistant
you still need to reapply
every 2 hours.
Clothing helps to block
sun rays so if possible,
wear a light-weight, longsleeved shirt, sunglasses,
and a wide-brim hat to help
protect your skin.
Remain in the shade as much as
possible. When your kids are
playing in the sand, have
them remain under a large
umbrella for more protection.

LA FIESTA 2015!
WOW! 2015 is sliding right by, and our earlier Fiesta date this year is quickly sneaking up!
Each class is working hard to earn eligibility for a piata.
Our main time frame for Fiesta this year is Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17th with several of
our 5th grade classes postponed due to a special Chorus program that week.
After careful consideration, some changes will be made to our Fiesta. We will not be serving any snacks, so we
wont have to worry you with requests for donations of these items! Volunteers are still welcomed, but this change will allow
us to hold each class Fiesta with fewer volunteers, especially keeping the constraints of Sra. Fultzs portable in mind!
Once again, the students will be able to participate in fun activities, register for raffle prizes, and purchase stuff
with their pesos. Contributions of items for purchases and prizes such as trinkets, small gently used toys, and dollar store
items are welcomed!
If you would like to volunteer to help out with your students class the week of April 13 17th, please see the links
below to check out the class schedules for Sra. G. and Sra. Fultz. Email Sra. Gonzlez (jgonzale@lexrich5.org) if you can be
with us!

We are already planning for the next school year and

are currently recruiting nurses who are interested in
being part of the school nurse substitute team. You
may choose to run the Health Room and/or be part of
the screening nurse group who will conduct student
health screenings. This will include screening students
for vision, hearing, and blood pressure. Training/
orientation will be provided.

Spring Pictures are being sent home

today in Thursday folders. Pictures and/
or money are due back by April 17.
Please make checks payable to Strawbridge. Payment information is inside
the picture envelope.
Class pictures are not in yet. If you
ordered one, they will be sent home as
soon as they arrive.

Re:

Nominations for School Improvement Council

Every school in South Carolina is required by the Education Improvement Act to have a School Improvement Council. The
council serves as an advisory committee to the principal and assists with establishing and implementing goals for the school.
The council also helps establish priorities for the capital expenditures budget, the incentive budget and the operational budget for the school. At various times, SIC members are asked to represent the school on district committees. The School Improvement Council is composed of elected and appointed teachers, parents, and community members.
Our current council consists of the following elected parents from our school.
Rotating off the council this year:
Robby Aull
Michael Sechrest
The following parents will serve their second year during 2015-2016 school year:
Jonathan Garris
Jo Anne Hill
Lynn McFarland
Fran Ricks
Each year parents elect their representatives to serve on the council. The two people elected will begin their term of service
in the 2015-2016 school year and will rotate off the council at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
Before submitting a nomination, we request that you ask the person for permission to submit his/her name. It is important
that those nominated be willing to serve as a representative for the school. If you are interested in running, please nominate
yourself. Elected parents should have a child who will be at Lake Murray Elementary for the length of time of their service on
the council.
