New features

Renishaw OMV 2013 contains the following new features and

enhancements:

Specifying machine parameters (see page 2) The parameters

section of the Machine tab has been redesigned and simplified.

Probe and Parameters items (see page 3) Renishaw OMV 2013

contains a new sequence item for specifying the probes and
probing parameters of an inspection. It enables you to quickly
view and enter the settings for multiple items, and removes the
ability to set parameters from individual items.

New features 1

Specifying the simulation

parameters

The Parameters section of the Machine tab has been renamed and
simplified. The name has changed to Simulation Parameters to clarify
its function of controlling the simulator, and the parameter settings
have been reduced and redesigned to improve usability.
To specify the speed at which the inspection sequence is simulated:
1 Select the Machine tab, and click the Simulation Parameters
section. The simulation parameters are displayed.

2 Move the Simulation move speed multiplier slider to change the

speed at which goto (or rapid) moves are performed.
3 Move the Simulation measure speed multiplier slider to change the
speed at which measurement (or touch) moves are performed.
4 By default, the move speeds and measure speeds are
independent. If you want to match the Simulation measure speed
multiplier to the Simulation move speed multiplier, select the Use
the same factor check box.
To test the effect of your changes, select the Simulate Program
tab and run the inspection sequence.

Probe and Parameters

items
Previously, the probe and the probing parameters of the measuring
device were set for each item using the Features tab. This gave a
flexible method of controlling measurement, but could make it
difficult to track setting changes and update the inspection
sequence.
In Renishaw OMV 2013, the specification of the probe and
parameter settings is separated from individual geometric items and
inspection groups, and is now controlled through a new Probe and
Parameters item. This has the advantage of enabling you to set and
change probing parameters for single or multiple items, and also
provides direct access to the settings through the inspection
sequence, so removing the need for the Probe Change Wizard.

When you open a document created in a previous version of

Renishaw OMV, a Probe and Parameters item is automatically
inserted in front of each item that includes a probe or probing
parameter change. You are recommended to check these
settings and test the updated sequence before running the
inspection on a measuring device.

Setting the initial probing parameters

When you create an inspection document, Renishaw OMV
automatically adds a Default Probe and Parameters item to the
inspection sequence immediately below the PCS (CAD Datum). This
enables you to specify the initial probe and the probing parameters
for the inspection, including the Distance and Speed parameters
used to create probe paths.
To specify the initial parameters for an inspection:
1 In the inspection sequence, double-click the Default Probe and
Parameters item. The Probe and Parameters dialog is displayed.

2 Select the Setup probe tool check box, and select the initial probe
for the inspection in the Probe list. If the probe has multiple tips,
select the tip you want to use in the Sensor list.

4 Probe and Parameters items

3 The Distances, Speeds, and Accelerations tabs list the probing

parameters you can specify. Some, such as Approach and
Measure speed are automatically set to default values to enable
Renishaw OMV to calculate probe paths; most are set to
Undefined, which makes no change to the initial settings of the
measuring device. Select the check boxes of the parameters you
want to change, and enter the initial value and unit for each
setting.
If you change a setting that is not used by your measuring
device, it has no effect.
4 Click OK to save your changes and close the dialog.
The changes are included in the probe path of the next measured
item in the inspection sequence. These settings are then used to
measure all following items unless changed by a subsequent
Probe and Parameters item.

Creating Probe and Parameters items

As well as specifying the initial probing parameters for the
document, Probe and Parameters items are used to change the
settings for groups or individual items during the course of the
inspection sequence. This enables you to adjust the probing
parameters using the same method as that used to specify the
initial settings.
To add a Probe and Parameters item to the inspection sequence:
1 In the inspection sequence, position the insertion cursor
immediately before the measurement item for which you want to
change the probing parameters.
2 In the Miscellaneous toolbar, click
Parameters dialog is displayed.

. The Probe and

3 By default, the probe and probing settings are based on the

preceding Probe and Parameters item in the inspection sequence.
If you want to base the parameters on a different Probe and
Parameters item, select its entry in the Reference item list. If you
do not want to base the parameters on any Probe and
Parameters item, select <No reference item>.
4 In the Probe list, select the probe assembly you want to use.
5 In the Distances, Speeds, and Accelerations tabs, select the
check boxes of the parameters you want to change, and enter
the new probing settings.
Settings inherited from the selected reference item are
displayed in grey.
6 Click OK to save your changes and close the dialog.
If you add the item at the Definition level of the inspection
sequence, it applies to all following items; if you add the item to
a geometric group, the settings apply only to the following items
in that group.

Using Probe and Parameters items

Probe and Parameters items are designed to be referenced from
within other Probe and Parameters items. This has several
advantages:

You do not need to define all the parameters each time you
create a Probe and Parameters item. Instead, you can select
another item that specifies most of the settings you want to
apply, and then use the tabs in the Probe and Parameters dialog
to change only those settings that are different.

Making a change to a Probe and Parameters item is automatically

propagated to all items that reference it. For example, if you
need to use a substitute probe to that specified in the Default
Probe and Parameters item, changing the probe in the default
item will change the probe in all the items that reference it.

You can quickly reset the probing parameters to those used in

another part of the inspection sequence. For example, you can
specify the parameters for a probed circle, change the
parameters for an inspection group, and then reset parameter
back to those used for the circle by referencing Probe and
Parameters item used by the circle.

The following example demonstrates how Probe and Parameters

items work:

Renishaw OMV 2013 What's New

Probe and Parameters items 7

Renishaw OMV automatically adds a Probe and Parameters item when

you create a document. It specifies the initial probe and probing
settings for the inspection.
Plane 1 uses the settings specified by the Default Probe and
Parameters item.
Probe and Parameters 1 switches to a smaller probe for the holes used
to create the alignment.

Only the probe is changed by this item so the other parameter values
are inherited from the reference item. Because Geometric Group 1
contains no other Probe and Parameters items, its settings are used to
measure the remaining features in the group.
Probe and Parameters items apply only to the group in which they are
included, so Inspection Group 1 reverts to the settings specified by the
preceding item in the Definition level of the sequence (in this case, the
Default Probe and Parameters item). The changes are sent to the
measuring device as part of the probe path created for Inspection
Group 1; not by the alignment item. This is because probe and
parameter settings are updated only by items that create a probe path.
To avoid collisions, Probe and Parameters 2 increases the approach
and retract distances to 10 mm for Inspection Group 2.

When a parameter is Undefined, no instruction is sent to the

controller, and the machine remains in its default state.

8 Probe and Parameters items

Renishaw OMV 2013 What's New

Probe and Parameters 3 sets Probe and Parameters 1 as its reference

item without making any other changes.

This ensures that Geometric Group 2 uses the same settings as

Geometric Group 1 without the need to re-enter the first group's
settings. It also ensures that any future changes to Probe and
Parameters 1 are automatically reflected in Geometric Group 2.
Inspection Group 3 reverts to using the settings specified in Probe and
Parameters 2. If you wanted to revert to the settings specified at the
beginning of the sequence, you could insert another Probe and
Parameters item that referenced the Default item.
To check which probing settings are used by an item, select its
entry in the inspection sequence and then select the Info tab.

Viewing the probing parameters

To enable you to identify the probe and parameters used to
measure an item, a new section has been added to the Info tab
details of measurement items. For example:

In addition, you can also view the details of Probe and Parameters
items in the Info tab. For example:
