SLIDER-ROCKER MECHANISM DESIGN PROJECT

Students are required to undertake a project related to the course materials. The
marks allocated for the projects constitute 10% of the total course marks. The
project will be undertaken by groups of four or five students.

Design Requirement
(Refer to Table 1 for variables and values)
1. A mechanism is to be driven by an electric motor turning at constant
speed and direction. The speed of the motor must be a multiple of 10
rpm.
2. Two motion outputs are required from the mechanism. The motions are all
on a single plane. Their descriptions are as follows:
a. A linear reciprocating motion of a slider along the horizontal axis
with a stroke of S. The expected tolerance is 0.5 mm.
b. A rocking motion with a throw angle of degrees. The expected
tolerance is 1.
3. To reduce the forces in the joints,
a. The coupler ratio of the sliding mechanism must be made greater
than 3.5.
b. The transmission angle of the rocking mechanism must be
between 45 and 135.
4. The space occupied by the moving parts of the mechanism should be
minimized. The coupler ratio of the sliding mechanism should be less
than 6.
5. The time ratio of the sliding mechanism must be at least 1.1.
6. The highest speed achieved by the sliding mechanism must be between
VMIN and VMAX mm/s.
7. Each project group must use the assigned values S, , VMIN and VMAX
as shown in TABLE 1

B. PRESENTATION

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS

The group is to present the simulation of a dynamic model of the

mechanism using ADAMS in the lab.
Plots of the slider displacement, velocity and acceleration should be
presented and these will be compared with those in the report which have
been submitted earlier.
Any members might be asked to perform certain tasks using ADAMS.
No PowerPoint slides required.
Length of presentation: 15 minutes per group.
All members of the group must be present.
