MEE5206: VIBRATIONS
ROTATING MACHINERY FAULT PROJECT: AUGUST 2014 SESSION

Instructions:
Study the given problems based on the information given for
each group (see Table 1)
Each group should submit a report and present the case before
on Week 13

Descriptions:
Rotating Machinery fault scenarios is given in Table 1. Each group need to conduct a thorough
investigation on a given fault phenomenon. Use a virtual lab developed by Dr V. N. A. Naikan,
Indian Institute of technology Kharagpur for simulation.
-

Discuss in detail how the given fault phenomenon can occur

Present the theoretical background on the given fault phenomenon.
Investigate the effect of different operating parameters on the given fault phenomenon

through virtual lab simulator.

Select an International case study related to your project tile and discuss in detail in your

report by including the technique and solution provided to resolve the phenomenon.
It is expected from the students to do literature review and to use at least minimum of 10

journal papers related to the project.

The report should follow the general format given in Table 2

Machinery Soft-Foot
Machinery soft foot is a phenomenon that occurs on machines fitted on foundation with
four bolts. One of the bolts will be slightly above compared to the plane containing other
three bolts. This is known as soft foot.

Diagnosis of Shaft Misalignment and its Effects

Misalignment is an important problem of rotating systems. Shaft misalignment is a
condition in which to coupled shafts are not rotating with respect to a common axis.
Misalignment can be identified by vibration monitoring of the system.

Static Balancing Studies of Rotary Systems

Rotational Static Unbalance Static Unbalance Studies

Oil Whirl Monitoring

Rotor imbalance is one of the most important problems in rotating systems. Several
factors contribute to these problems. In static imbalance, the rotor will have a preferred
position when it is in static condition.

Mechanical Looseness
Mechanical looseness shows up in the frequency domain as a large number of harmonics
of running speed when lightly loaded.

Bearing Defects of Various Types

Bearings are the most important components of rotating systems. Various types of
defects are found in bearings. These defects can be diagnosed by vibration monitoring.

Effects of Bent Shafts on Rotor Performance

Bent shaft or Bowed rotor is a serious defect of rotating systems. Dynamically this
condition is similar to static imbalance which generates huge force resulting system
failure. This condition can be diagnosed by vibration monitoring.
