OD
A B
OD

R
OD
A B
A Dimension The A dimension or distance from pipe end to groove provides the gasket
seating area. This area must be free from indentations, projections or roll marks from the pipe
end to the groove to provide a leaktight seat for the gasket.
B Dimension The B dimension or groove width controls expansion and angular deflection by the distance it is located from the pipe and its width in relation to the housing key
width.
C Dimension The C dimension is the proper diameter at the base of the groove. This
must be within diameter tolerance and concentric with the O.D. for proper coupling fit. The
groove must be of uniform depth for the entire pipe circumference.
D Dimension The D dimension is the nominal depth ot the groove and is a reference for
a Trial Groove only. This dimension is affected by variations in the O.D. of the pipe. This dimension must be altered if necessary to keep dimension C within stated tolerance.
The groove must conform to the C dimension.
F Standard Roll Groove Only Maximum allowable pipe end flare diameter measured at the
most extreme pipe end diameter.
T Dimension Minimum wall(T dimension) is the lightest grade or thickness of pipe suitable for cut grooving; or for roll grooving. Pipe of less than minimum wall for cut grooving may
be roll grooved or may be adapted for Victaulic couplings with applied Vic-Ring adapters.
Vic-Ring adapters can also be used on pipe of less than minimum wall, pipe too large to groove
or for abrasive services. Contact Victaulic for details.
R Dimension The R dimension is the radius necessary at the bottom of the groove to
eliminate a point of stress concentration for cast pipe (gray and ductile) and PVC plastic pipe.
CAUTION
Pipe dimensions and groove dimensions must be within the tolerances specified in the Groove
Dimension charts on the following pages to ensure proper joint performance.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint
leakage or joint failure.

GASKET SELECTION
Victaulic offers a variety of synthetic rubber gaskets to provide the option of selecting grooved
piping products for the widest range of applications. To assure maximum life for the service
intended, proper gasket selection and specification in ordering is essential.
Many factors must be considered in determining the optimum gasket for a specific service.
Temperatures beyond the recommended limits have a degrading effect on the gasket. Therefore, there is a direct relationship between temperature, continuity of service and gasket life.
Services listed are General Service Recommendations only. It should be noted that there are
services for which these gaskets are not recommended. Reference should always be made to
the latest Victaulic Gasket Selection Guide for specific gasket service recommendations and for
a listing of services which are not recommended.
Gasket recommendations apply only to Victaulic gaskets. Recommendations for a particular
service do not necessarily imply compatibility of the coupling housing, related fittings or other
components for the same service.
These recommendations do not apply to rubber-lined valves or other rubber-lined products.
Refer to PB-160 for rubber-lined Butterfly Valve recommendations. Consult Victaulic for other
recommendations.
CAUTION
To assure maximum life for the service intended, proper gasket selection and specification in
ordering is essential.
Failure to select the proper rubber compound may result in personal injury or property damage,
improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.

29
CAUTION
To assure maximum life for the service intended, proper gasket selection and specification in
ordering is essential.
Failure to select the proper rubber compound may result in personal injury or property damage,
improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.
30
CAUTION
The following instructions apply generally to assembly of Victaulic products and must be followed to ensure proper joint assembly.
Failure to follow these general instructions and the specific assembly procedures, cautions, and
warnings peculiar to each type of Victaulic product could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.
1. Pipe outside diameter and grooving dimensions must be within tolerances shown for each
individual product size and style and is subject to the specific standards for acceptability.
2. Rigid angle pad couplings must have nuts tightened evenly and securely to obtain metal-tometal bolt pad contact with the same offset at each housing.
3. Flexible couplings with flat bolt pads must have nuts tightened evenly and securely to bring
all bolt pads firmly together.
4. Couplings with tongue and recess feature must be properly mated tongue to recess.
5. Where torque is specified for coupling assembly these ratings must be applied during
installation.
6. Over-torquing, beyond specified ratings will not improve sealing and may cause failure. Victaulic valve body, disc and other wetted components must be compatilble with the material
flowing in the system. Refer to latest Victaulic literature or contact Victaulic for recommendations.
8. Placement of check valves too close to sources of unstable flow will shorten the life of the
valve and potentially may damage the system. To extend valve life, valves should be installed a reasonable distance away from pumps, elbows, expanders, reducers, or other similar devices. Sound piping practices dictate a minimum distance of five(5) times the pipe
diameter for general use. Distances between three(3) and five(5) diameters are allowable
provided the flow velocity is less than eight (8) feet per second. Distances less than three(3)
diameters are not recommended.
9. Before setting up and operating Victaulic pipe preparation tools, read and understand the Operators Instruction Manual supplied with each tool. Additional copies are available at no
charge from Victaulic Tool Company.
10. Victaulic female threaded products are designed to accommodate standard ANSI male pipe
threads only. Use of male threaded products employing special features such as probes, dry
pendant sprinkler heads, etc., should be checked with the Victaulic product with which they
are to be used to verify that they are, in fact, suitable. Failure to verify suitablility in advance
may result in difficulties in assembly or leakage.
WARNING
Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting disassembly and
removal of any Victaulic piping products.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage or joint
separation.

Standard grooved-type couplings allow controlled angular, linear and rotational movement at
each joint to accommodate expansion, contraction, settling, vibration, noise and other piping
system movement. These features provide advantages in designing piping systems but must
be considered when determining hanger and support spacing and location.

RIGID SYSTEMS
Zero-Flex Style 07, Firelock Style 005 and Transition Style 307
Rigid Couplings have a unique, patented angle pad design which
constricts the housing keys into the groove around the full circumference to grip the pipe rigidly. The housings slide on the angled
pads rather than mating squarely.
This sliding adjustment also forces the key sections into opposed
contact on the inside and the outside groove edges, pushing the
joint to its maximum pipe end separation (see chart below) during
assembly.
These rigid couplings provide a rigid joint allowing no expansion/
contraction linear movement. Couplings will push the pipe ends to
their maximum allowable separation which must be considered
during assembly.
CAUTION
Victaulic rigid angle pad couplings must have nuts tightened evenly and securely to obtain
metal-to-metal bolt pad contact with the same offset at each housing segment.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, proper damage, improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.

37
To achieve maximum expansion/contraction alllowance, the joints must be installed with the
proper pipe end spacing. This can be done in several ways, the most popular being those which
are summarized as follows. For complete details request DD-106 Design Data and Gasket
Selection.
GROOVE/COUPLING GAPPING
The Pipe End Separation and related maximum Allowable Pipe End Movement bear a relationship with the visible gaps on either side of the coupling housing between the housing and rear
edge of the groove. This visible gap can be used as a check for assuring proper installation of
most couplings for maximum movement.
Where pipe expansion is required, the pipe ends are assembled in the full-open gap (G) position which leaves one-half the gap allowance (G/2) visible at each side of the coupling. For
pipe contraction, no gap at the outside of the coupling should be visible. The pipe must be
secured to maintain these positions.
38
ASSEMBLY INSPECTION
Proper coupling assembly on properly prepared pipe is essential for maximum joint performance and longevity. The following is a guide to check conditions to assure proper assembly
and to show what can occur if preparation and assembly is not correct.
NORMAL
Pipe O.D. and groove dimensions are within tolerance and the coupling is properly assembled with bolt pads metal to metal.
Notice that the housing key does not rest on or grip the bottom of
the groove (with the exception of Victaulic rigid couplings), but it
does allow for full engagement of the key against the groove face.
In completing a proper joint, the gasket is also slightly compressed
adding to the strength of the seal from the gaskets natural resiliency.
Normal
UNDERSIZE PIPE/FITTING
When the O.D. of the pipe or fitting is below tolerance, the engagement of the housing key section is considerably lessened. This
results in reduced working pressure for the joint.
Additionally, there is little or no added compression of the gasket.
The increased gap (G) between pipe and housing may also result
in gasket extrusion. These factors can combine to contribute to
reduced gasket life.
Undersize Fitting
Oversize Fitting
OVERSIZE PIPE/FITTING
When the O.D. of the pipe or fitting exceeds tolerance the engagement of the housing key section is increased to the point that gripping of the shoulder on the pipe may occur. This can
result in reduced linear or angular movement.
Under these conditions the bolt pads will not be joined metal-to-metal with possible gasket
extrusion, reduced working pressure and reduced gasket life.
39
SHALLOW GROOVE
A groove which is not deep enough will have the same effect as the conditions described as
Undersize Pipe/Fitting.
KEY
KEY
Shallow Groove
Eccentric Grooving
ECCENTRIC GROOVING
This occurs generally from out-of-round pipe which is grooved with a stationary tool bit such
as on a lathe. Tools which rotate the pipe rather than rotating around the pipe may affect this
condition.
The result is a groove too shallow on one side and too deep on the other, this may lead to a
combination of the conditions outlined in Oversize Pipe and Shallow Groove.
CAUTION
Victaulic flexible couplings with flat bolt
pads must have nuts tightened to bring all
bolt pads firmly together metal-to-metal.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation,
joint leakage or joint failure.
CAUTION
Victaulic rigid angle pad couplings must
have nuts tightened evenly and securely to
obtain metal-to-metal bolt pad contact with
the same offset at each housing segment.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation,
joint leakage or joint failure.

To allow for easy installation, insulation and
maintenance, consideration should be given
to proper spacing between pipes. Since Victaulic grooved pipe couplings are an externally mounted housing with bolt pads, allow
access for the bolts and prevent interference
between pipe and adjacent coupling.
Pipe centerline should be spaced with the
width of the coupling housing (Y dimension under Product Specifications) for systems where couplings are staggered and the
width Y plus 20% where couplings are inline.
WARNING
Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting disassembly and
removal of any Victaulic piping products.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage or joint
separation.

WARNING
When re-using Snap-Joints, always check
the gasket to be certain it is not damaged. Always check the housing hinge and locking
handle to be certain they have not loosened,
distorted, bent or are in any way damaged. If
in doubt, do not re-use.
Follow the entire assembly sequence,
checking the pipe and groove conditions, lubricate, etc., in re-assembling Snap-Joints.
Failure to do could result in serious personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.
WARNING
Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting disassembly and removal of any Victaulic piping
products.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage
or joint separation.
5. CLOSE LEVER HANDLE: Lift locking handle and position the nose of the locking handle in the cradle tab of the opposite housing.
Push the locking handle down firmly until
entire handle assembly contacts the coupling
housing to assure a locked joint. Some force
may be necessary to properly lock the handle.
WARNING
Use of hammers, sledges or other heavy
instruments for disassembly can crack, distort or misalign coupling locking device and
thereby reduce locking efficiency, reduce
pressure rating or render coupling unsuitable
for reuse.
Style 78 couplings and pipe used in concrete pumping must always be in functional
condition and be free of concrete and foreign
material in the pipe grooves and the keys and
gasket cavity of the couplings. It should never
be necessary to close coupling by hammering. The coupling and grooved pipe ends
should be reinspected for damage or dirty
components which stop normal closure.
Failure to follow these instructions could
result in serious personal injury, property
damage, improper installation, joint leakage
or joint failure.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
When used in concrete pumping, Style 78 couplings must be used within the design parameters. It is important to note that the working pressure must include shockload.
COUPLINGS ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR ECCENTRIC LOADINGS. Style 78 Couplings are not recommended for use at the end of concrete pumping booms, or on vertical risers above 30 feet.
Sound anchoring and lashing practices should always be employed.

WARNING
Excessive force should never be required for assembly of this product. In the event the Assembly
Tool does not fit or resists closure or the Locking Pin cannot be seated, the gasket position should
be checked and the pipe ends must be carefully examined for improper dimensions.
Use of hammers or other heavy instruments for Assembly Tool closure or disassembly can crack,
distort or misalign components, thereby reducing coupling working pressure, rating or rendering
the coupling unsuitable for re-use.
Only use the proper size Victaulic Locking Pin supplied with each coupling (or the proper size
replacement Locking Pin for re-assembly) for assembly. Use of other items may result in significantly reduced coupling performance.
Failure to follow these instructions could result in serous personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint leakage or joint failure.

FLANGE WASHERS
Vic-Flange adapters require a smooth, hard surface at the mating flange face for effective sealing. Some applications for which the Vic-Flange adapter is otherwise well suited do not provide
an adequate mating surface. In such cases, it is recommended that a metal Flange Washer be
inserted between the Vic-Flange and the mating flange to provide the necessary sealing surface.
NOTE: Specify Vic-Flange size and style (741, 743, 341, or 342) when ordering.
Typical applications where a Flange Washer should be used are:
1. When mating to a serrated flange: a flange gasket should be used adjacent to the serrated
flange and when the Flange Washer is inserted between the Vic-Flange adapter and the
flange gasket.
2. When mating to a wafer valve: where typical valves are rubber lined and partially rubber
faced (smooth or not), the Flange Washer is placed between the valve and the Vic-Flange
adapter.
3. When mating to a rubber faced flange: the Flange Washer is placed between the Vic-Flange
adapter and the rubber faced flange.
4. When mating C.I. flanges to IPS flanges: the Flange Washer is placed between two VicFlange adapters. If one flange is not a Vic-Flange adapter (e.g., flanged valve), then a flange
gasket must be placed adjacent to that flange and the Flange Washer inserted between the
flange gasket and the Vic-Flange adapter.
5. When mating components (valves, strainers, etc.) where the component flange face has
an insert: follow the same arrangement as in Application 1.

IMPORTANT: Break wire run to provide electrical supervision.
Never loop an uninsulated section of wire around a terminal.
The wire must be severed.
NOTES: Disabling the tamper resistant cover feature on either or both switches will void the Underwriters Laboratories listing and Factory Mutual approval.
The switches tamper resistant cover contains a protrusion which depresses a flat spring when the cover is in
place. The tamper action spring activates the switch(s), which will ordinarily sound an alarm, when the cover is
removed.
The unit contains two switches which allow easy connection to a fire control panel and/or warning device (bell,
horn, etc.). A " wiring access hole is provided in the housing.
In most cases, the indicating device or control panel should be connected to the normally open (NO) contacts of
the switch shown in figure 2. The normally closed (NC) contacts are provided for devices which require the circuit to be opened to obtain an indication.
59
ACTUATOR REPAIR
In the unlikely event of an actuator failure, the following should be performed. Complete unit
replacement is recommended.
Have a qualified electrician disable the alarm system, if applicable.
60
CAUTION
Placement of check valves too close to
sources of unstable flow will shorten the life
of the valve and potentially may damage the
system. To extend valve life, valves should be
installed a reasonable distance away from
pumps, elbows, expanders, reducers, or
other similar devices. Sound piping practices
dictate a minimum distance of five (5) times
the pipe diameter for general use. Distances
between three (3) and five (5) diameters are
allowable provided the flow velocity is less
than eight (8) feet per second. Distances less
than three (3) diameters are not recommended.
Failure to do so could result in property
damage, improper installation, valve leakage or valve failure.
NOTE: Vic-Check valves installed in horizontal orientation must be installed with the
shaft vertical and the drain plug hole facing
down.
NOTE: Style 377 must be installed with the seat upstream (as illustrated) closest to the pump discharge.
Failure to do so could result in improper installation or improper balancing performance.
61

NOTE: After assembly, verify proper LOCKED orientation of the locking lugs with the indicators cast into the
housing and marked on the end of the lug.
CAUTION
Do not force lug(s) beyond 90 position.
Rotation of lugs to 90 position is required to
provide holding force. Locking lugs must be
properly positioned to prevent joint failure.
Failure to properly assemble FIT products
with locking lug in proper orientation could
result in personal injury, property damage,
improper installation, joint leakage or joint
failure.
4A. 2" SIZE FIT PRODUCTS: The 2" fittings are supplied with (2) lugs at each end of the fitting.
Rotate both lugs in the direction of the arrow (clockwise) 90 - ( turn). Proper rotation has
been reached when lugs on both sides are in the same orientation as the locked position indicator and the grooves on the ends of the lugs are in line with the alignment indicators.
NOTE: Internal portion of FIT products is exposed to fluid media. Not recommended for acid or corrosive services.
Victaulic female threaded products are designed to accommodate standard ANSI male pipe threads only. Use of male
threaded products employing special features such as probes, dry pendant sprinkler heads, etc., should be checked with
the Victaulic product for which they are to be used to verify that they are, infact, suitable. Failure to verify suitability in
advance may result in difficulties in assembly or leakage.
DISASSEMBLY
Disassembly may be accomplished by rotating the lugs 90 counterclockwise to unlock. DO
NOT attempt to align FIT products by rotating pipe or fitting with lug(s) in the locked position. Doing so may cause damage to the pipe and lug.
FIT SOCKET
A specially designed socket is available to
speed and ease assembly of FIT products. FIT
Socket is sized specially for FIT locking lugs.
It fits any standard -inch drive socket
wrench or breaker bar. Side fins on the
socket assist lug orientation for proper
assembly.
FIT Socket is recommended for assembly of
FIT products. The steel socket is case hardened for durability. The lug opening is
recessed for easy lug entry. Use with a standard socket wrench permits tightening FIT
lugs from varied angles or positions.
Assembly procedure shown for Style 96 FIT Reducing Tee is typical for Style 961 FIT 90 Elbow,
Style 969 Reducing Run and Outlet Tee, Style 929 FIT Outlet/Mechanical-T, Style 966 Reducing
Elbow, Style 963 Straight Tee and Style 960 Straight Coupling.

83
COUPLING ASSEMBLY
Style 995-T HDP Transition Coupling
Victaulic Style 995-T Transition couplings are
designed to connect HDP pipe directly to
steel (or other IPS metallic) pipe of the same
outside diameter. The design requires a special grooved nipple, specially grooved pipe or
fittings to accomplish this. Standard square
cut or roll groove dimensions MUST NOT BE
USED.
Refer to Product Bulletin PB-134 for special
grooving dimensions or contact Victaulic.
Style 995-T coupling MUST be assembled with gasket cavity tongues-to-recesses noted and
with ridged gripping teeth on the HDP pipe and key section end engaged into the special
grooves on the steel (metallic) pipe end. See Warning on page 85.
WARNING
Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting disassembly and
removal of any Victaulic piping products.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage or joint
separation.
84
4.CHECK GASKET AND ASSEMBLE: Lubricate gasket lips and place gasket over HDP
pipe end and joint with steel pipe, preferably
butt pipe ends (see note). Align gasket with
mark made on HDP pipe as shown on page
82.
6.APPLY HOUSING: Place housing over gasket being sure the gasket remains centered
over the pipe ends. Coupling MUST be
assembled with gasket cavity tongues-torecesses mated and with ridged gripping
teeth on the HDP pipe and key section end
engaged into the special grooves on the steel
(metallic) pipe end.
7.TIGHTEN NUTS: Tighten the nuts uniformly, alternating sides until housing bolt
pads meet firmly metal-to-metal. Alternate
tightening for uniformity is essential to prevent gasket pinching.
CAUTION
Victaulic HDP couplings must have nut
tightened to bring all bolt pads firmly together
metal-to-metal.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation,
joint leakage or joint failure.
WARNING
Style 995-T Coupling MUST be assembled with gasket cavity tongues-to-recesses mated and
with ridged gripping teeth on the HDP pipe and key section end engaged into the special grooves
on the steel (metallic) pipe end.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage or joint
separation.

TOOLS
REFER TO PAGES 14 AND 15 FOR INFORMATION ON VICTAULIC CUT GROOVING TOOLS
FOR DUCTILE IRON AND CAST IRON PIPE OF AWWA DIMENSIONS.
CAUTION
Before setting up and operating Victaulic pipe preparation tools, read and understand the Operators Instruction Manual supplied with each tool. Additional copies are available at no charge from
Victaulic Tool Company. Refer to page 8 of this manual for Operator Safety Instructions.
Learn the operation, application and potential hazards peculiar to this tool.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint
leakage or joint failure.
Victualic groove specifications for cast pipe (gray and ductile) conform to requirements of
ANSI/AWWA standard C-606.
For cast pipe, the groove is cut with a radius (R dimensions) at the corners of the groove
base to reduce stress concentration. Grooving dimensions are the same for any one pipe O.D.
regardless of pipe class and pressure.
Standard preparation is with rigid radius groove. Flexible radius groove dimensions may be
used to provide expansion/contraction or angular movement allowance at the joint.
The outside surface of the pipe between the groove and pipe end must be smooth and free
from deep pits or swells to provide a leaktight seat for the Victaulic gasket. All rust, loose scale,
oil, grease, and dirt shall be removed. Peened surfaces may require corrective action to provide
leaktight gasket seal (refer to ANSI/AWWA C-606).
88
GROOVE DIMENSIONS
CAUTION
Pipe dimensions and groove dimensions must be within the tolerances specified in the Groove
Dimension charts on the following pages to ensure proper joint performance.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation, joint
leakage or joint failure.

4.APPLY HOUSING: Place housing over gasket, being sure the housing keys engage into
the grooves. Insert bolts and apply nuts finger tight.
CAUTION
Victaulic couplings for ductile or cast pipe
with flat bolt pads must have nuts tightened to
bring all bolt pads firmly together metal-tometal.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury, property damage, improper installation,
joint leakage or joint failure.
92
LARGER COUPLINGS
On couplings 10" or larger, you may find it
easier to turn the gasket inside out then
lubricate and slide over the pipe end as
shown.
WARNING
Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting disassembly and
removal of any Victaulic piping products.
Failure to do so could result in serious personal injury, property damage, joint leakage or joint
separation.

NOTE: When used with wafer-type valves or rubber-lined components, request information from
Victaulic.
FLANGE WASHERS
Vic-Flange adapters require a smooth, hard surface at the mating flange face for effective sealing. Some applications for which the Vic-Flange adapter is otherwise well suited do not provide
an adequate mating surface. In such cases, it is recommended that a metal (Phenol Type F for
Copper Vic-Flange adapter Style 641) Flange Washer be inserted between the Vic-Flange and
the mating flange to provide the necessary sealing surface.
NOTE: Specify Vic-Flangeadapter size and style (741, 743 or 341) when ordering.
Typical applications where a Flange Washer should be used are:
1. When mating to a serrated flange: a flange gasket should be used adjacent to the serrated
flange and then the Flange Washer is inserted between the Vic-Flange adapter and the flange
gasket.
