Notes On Koine Greek: Part 54

www.MichaelHalcomb.com

1. The Future Middle Indicative: As noted in the previous section of these

“Notes”, the goal is to follow the same sort of process for the Middle Voice
Paradigms as I did with the Active Voice ones. Thus, having covered the Present
Middle, we now move on to the Future Middle.
2. Just Add a Sigma! But You Already Knew That: Since we already have
the Present Middle down and since we already know, from our experiences with
the Present & Future Active Indicative that, all we had to do to form the Future
Tense was to add the infixed “Future-Time Morpheme”, we already know how to
form the Future Middle: Combine the two!
3. 1 Table + 2 Morphemes = Future Middle: So, here’s the table for the
Future Middle broken down by morphemes, notice that all we’ve done here is add
the Future-Time Morpheme (sigma / s) and the Neutral Morpheme (e / o) as
infixes to the endings found in the Present Middle table:

Future Middle Indicative

Notice here that
Neutral Morpheme is Singular Plural
not needed since when
1 lu,|s|o|mai I will loose for lu|s|o,|meqa We will loose for
the word morphs, the
final letter results in a myself ourselves
vowel. 2 lu,|s|h| You will loose for lu,|s|e|sqe You (all) will loose
yourself for yourselves
3 lu,|s|e|tai He will loose for lu,|s|o|ntai They will loose for
himself themselves

4. Examples: Some examples of where the Future Middle occurs are given below:

“…kai. lh,myetai avno,mhma auvtou/…” (Lev. 17.16b)

“…and he himself will bear his iniquity”
“kai. auvto.j lutrw,setai to.n Israhl evk pasw/n tw/n avnomiw/n auvtou/” (Psa. 129.8)
“And he himself will redeem Israel from all his iniquities”
“…uvto.j de. swqh,setai…” (1 Cor. 3.15)
“…but he himself will be saved…”

5. The Future of eivmi,: Since eivmi, in the Future follows the same pattern as that
above, we can now add to our arsenal this paradigm, which means that we have
studied eivmi, in all but a few of its tenses. To form the future of eivmi, all we have to
do is add the Future-Time Morpheme e;s before the Lexical and/or Netural
Morpheme:

Future eivmi,
Singular Plural
1 e;s|o|mai I will be e;s|o,|meqa We will be
2 e;s|h| You will be e;s|e|sqe You (all) will be
3 e;s|tai He will be e;s|o|ntai They will be
