OBJECTIVE
The objective of this test is to determine the level of Non Condensable Gases present in
steam will not prevent the attainment of sterilization conditions in any part of the load.

2.0.

SCOPE
This procedure is applicable for determine the Non Condensable Gases level in Steam

3.0.

RESPONSIBILITY
Site In charge: Sample collection and testing.
Manager: Implementation and compliance of the procedure.

4.0.

PROCEDURE
4.1. Equipment use:
4.1.1. Non Condensable gas test Unit.
4.1.2. SS Hose
4.1.3. Radiant flow Valve
4.1.4. Water pipe
4.1.5. Drain pipe
4.2. Sample collection Procedure:
4.2.1. Flush the Steam from Test point for 2 minutes, before sampling.
4.2.2. Connect the Radiant Flow Valve at the sampling point.
4.2.3. Connect SS hose to the Non Condensable gas test unit.
4.2.4. Supply cold water (<25oC) to the cold water inlet of the Non
Condensable gas test unit.
4.2.5. Open the Radiant flow valve slowly and then open needle valve for
steam to enter into the unit and also ensure that the cold water supply is

running properly.
4.2.6. Ensure that the steam condensates properly otherwise adjust the Flow of
cold water supply and steam supply.
Water Inlet
Drain

Water Outlet

Needle valve

4.2.7. Stop steam supply after the initial functional test

4.2.8. Open the valve of non condensable gas collection pipe
4.2.9. Add water from top of the condensate pipe(center), when water level
reaches the scale 0 close the valve of non condensable gas collection
pipe
4.2.10. Now restart the steam supply
4.2.11. The water level of condensate collection tube increases when it reaches
100 units in ml in scale (V2) close the steam supply. Read the non
condensable gases (V1) collected in the collection tube in units in ml.
4.2.12. Calculate the fraction of non-condensable gases as a percentage as
follows:
Fraction of non-condensable gases = 100 x (V1/V2)
4.2.13. The test should be considered satisfactory if the fraction of non
condensable gases does not exceed 3.5%.

4.2.14. The test should be done two more times to check consistency. If the
results of the three tests differ significantly, then the cause should be
investigated before proceeding further.
