Course Objectives: This course aims to investigate the academic theory associated with analyzing the various types of
signals and systems encountered in mathematical modelling of physical systems. Specific objectives are to help student
learn:

The mathematical description of signals and systems in terms of standard notations and conventions .
The difference and the inter-relationship of time domain / frequency domain based methods in investigation of
systems.
Appreciate the difficulty of system analysis in time domain and relative ease of system analysis in frequency
domain.
Appreciate the use of different types of transforms to switch from time to frequency domain and vice versa
Be able to understand system operational specifications and classify the system into standard categories The
designing of various compensation approaches if the system is not currently meeting design specifications.
The techniques for reduction of a complicated system model to a simple system model for efficient analysis

gain sufficient knowledge of characteristics and analysis of systems; e.g. control and communication systems.

Signal Description. Types of continuous and discrete time signals, Basic operation on signals,
Properties of signals
System Description. Classification of systems, (Continuous/ discrete systems, Linear/non linear
systems, Time varying/ time invariant systems, Causal/non causal systems, Static/ dynamic
systems). Block diagram reduction theorems.
Laplace Transform. Properties of Laplace transforms. Application to system analysis,
Representation on complex plane, Inverse Laplace transform, Solution of differential equation
using Laplace transform.
Feedback Control Systems - The System Response. First and second order systems response for
continuous time system (calculation of setting time, rise time overshoot, Steady state error,
System stability etc)
Convolution of continuous time and discrete signals, Graphical and integration formula methods.
The Z Transform. The properties of Z-transform. The inverse Z-transform. Application of Ztransform to the analysis of discrete time systems.
The Fourier Transform. Fourier transform for continuous systems. Fourier transform for discrete
signals. Fourier method for discrete time signal. Sampling of continuous signals, Introduction to
Discrete Fourier transform.
Filtering of signals. Ideal filter , Analogue Filters, The Butterworth , Chebyshev and Equi ripple
filters.
