SCENARIO: Students are learning about genre, story elements, and character development in the first grade.
Teacher wants to expand on this learning by reading a variety of books all based on the Cinderella story, allowing
students to analyze the story elements in each story and compare and contrast the differences in each one.
The teacher will be responsible for:
Reading some of the stories to the children
Discussing and teaching the concept of story elements and character traits
Giving and overseeing the assignments in the unit
Assisting students with use and access to the website Kidblog throughout the unit. (students already
have experience with the platform)
The media specialist will be responsible for:
Creating a prezi to incorporate into unit
Collecting Cinderella books from the library
Doing a read aloud of select Cinderella stories

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
OVERVIEW:
In this unit, students will be able to:
Identify the characters, settings, and major events of various Cinderella stories
Retell elements and key details from the stories
Explain the common character traits of the main characters in each story

Essential Questions:
How are character traits important to a storys structure?
How does the author develop character in a story?
What makes the same story different through the use of character, setting, and events?

FINAL PRODUCT:
Students will complete a graphic organizer that compares and contrasts two of the Cinderella stories.
They will draw and describe the key story elements from one of the stories, and will complete journal entries on
the Kidblog site.
LIBRARY LESSON(S):

MS will read a selected Cinderella story during each lesson of the unit, following up with discussion
about the key elements of the book, and continuing discussion by relating it to the others previously read.
ESTIMATED LESSON TIME:
One month duration, with weekly 30 minute visits with the MS to read each new Cinderella version. In class
sessions will involve digging deeper into the story elements of each story and working on activities and journal
entries around the stories.
ASSESSMENT
Product: Teacher will assess graphic organizer and story element picture and description
Process: Teacher and media specialist continually monitor and assess the Kidblog discussion, giving guidance
and support, while also posting within the board.

Instruction/activities

Direct instruction and Modeled practice:

Teacher: The teacher will give instruction on how to retell stories using character, setting, and major
events with details. She will demonstrate this with a story, guiding students through each element. She
will also teach how to compare and contrast two stories by modeling and describing the behavior.
Media Specialist: The MS will read Cinderella stories and talk about the story elements with students,
guiding them with probing questions that lead them to compare and contrast the stories.

Independent practice:
Students will post discussions in the Kidblog about the Cinderlla stories, with assistance. Students will
write journal entries first, which are proofread by teacher, before posting on Kidblog. Students will alos
draw pictures and describe story elements of the Cinderella stories.
Sharing and reflecting:
The Kidblog activity has sharing built in. Each class discussion will end with students sharing thoughts
and reflections with each other and the class.

Strategies for Differentiation


Students will be given scaffolded assistance based on their reading and writing levels. Some students will get
assistance in rereading books and passages, while others will work on their own or with a partner.
