During the match for third place between Turkey and Korea Republic in Daegu, Hakan Sukur struck the earliest
goal in FIFA World Cup history after just 11 seconds.
1958 & 1986
In 1958, Brazil won their first FIFA World Cup at the sixth attempt by defeating hosts Sweden 5-2. In 1986,
Argentina claimed their second World Cup title by downing Germany 3-2 in Mexico City, with the winning goal
scored by Jorge Burruchaga.

Yesterdays highlights 28 June 2014

Julio Cesar is one of 11 goalkeepers to have saved two spot-kicks in a FIFA World CupTM penalty shoot-out. The
only Brazilian who achieved the feat before him was Claudio Taffarel, against the Netherlands in 1998. The
tournament record of three saves in one shoot-out was set by Portuguese stopper Ricardo against England in
2006.
Brazil have won three of the four penalty shoot-outs they have contested in this competition. Prior to yesterdays
victory, A Seleo outsmarted Italy in the 1994 Final and the Netherlands in the 1998 semi-finals, losing only to
France in the 1986 quarter-finals.
Chile have been eliminated by Brazil in each of the four campaigns in which they have progressed beyond the
first stage (1962, 1998, 2010 and 2014).
Colombia have reached the last eight of the World Cup for the first time, their previous best performance being
a Round of 16 appearance in 1990.
Jose Pekerman is unbeaten in nine games as a coach in the World Cup. Before winning four matches with
Colombia in this tournament, he guided Argentina to three victories and two draws in 2006.
At 22 years and 11 months old, James Rodriguez is the fourth-youngest player to have scored in four
consecutive World Cup games, behind Teofilo Cubillas (21 years and three months in 1970), Ferenc Bene (1966)
and Pele (1958-1962), who were both 21 years and seven months old.
Yesterdays defeat by Colombia means that Uruguay have lost their last three meetings with fellow South
American teams in the World Cup, after having won the first five between 1930 and 1962.

The Netherlands have fared slightly better in the sides' six previous encounters, winning three, losing two and
drawing one.
That solitary stalemate was played out in the pairs only prior FIFA World CupTM meeting, during the group round
in 1998. It finished 2-2 after the Oranje had gone 2-0 ahead through Phillip Cocu and Ronald De Boer, only for

The pairs only previous encounter was a friendly match played in St Etienne in 2009 that Nigeria won 1-0,
thanks to a goal by Joseph Akpala.
Nigeria last reached the knockout stage in 1998. The first time the Super Eagles got this far was in 1994, when
they secured their progression to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Greece on this same date of 30 June.
Nigeria are the first African side to qualify for the second stage of the World Cup three times.
For the fifth consecutive edition France are facing African opposition, against whom Les Bleus have an even
head-to-head record of two victories (3-0 over South Africa in 1998 and 2-0 against Togo in 2006) and two
defeats (1-0 against Senegal in 2002 and 2-1 against South Africa in 2010).
Both of Nigerias previous Round of 16 matches ended in defeat at the hands of European opposition, namely

If selected, Joseph Yobo will play his 10th World Cup match and claim the Nigerian appearance record ahead of
Jay Jay Okocha on nine.
Stephen Keshi made his only World Cup appearance exactly 20 years ago on 30 June 1994, in Nigerias 2-0
victory over Greece.

Both of the sides previous engagements were won by Algeria. The first was a friendly in 1964 that ended 2-0
courtesy of goals from Khennane Mahi and Ahmed Oudjani. The second match, which finished 2-1 at the 1982

Germany enter this match on the back of seven consecutive Round of 16 victories from 1986 to 2010.
This is the 80th World Cup fixture pitting European and African teams against each other. UEFA representatives
have the better head-to-head record, with 40 wins, 22 draws and 16 defeats. The only missing result relates to
the Round of 16 duel between France and Nigeria that will be played just a few hours before this game.
