April 7 officially marked 100 days until the Strathmore

2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games are here, and organizers are excited to see their work come together.
Its exciting and its a work in progress, were certainly
not completely ready, but were certainly moving in the
right direction, said Games Committee Chair Donalda
Ledene. I think it has been a great journey for our community and the members of our committee and hopefully
were going to showcase our community to the province.
Help and support are still needed to see the event go off
without a hitch. One way to get involved is if youre 55 or
older, come out and participate in one of the zone playoffs
happening in Strathmore over the next few months. By
competing in zones you can have a chance to compete in
the provincials this July. Anyone looking for more information on competing can contact the Activities Director Joss
Binns at 403-934-2458.
We really would like to see more people actually as
participants in the games, said Ledene. We also, in hosting the games, have a great need for some people to come
forward who would be willing to billet some participants
from out of town and were always looking for volunteers.
We need probably 700 to 800 volunteers during that fourday event so if people have a few hours that they can contribute and would register as a volunteer that would be
great.
Billet hosts are also needed for the Thursday, Friday and
Saturday nights of the games. They are not required to provide meals, just a place to sleep. For more info on being a
billet call 403-934-2976.
There are also some fun events to get involved in between now and July. One of them, which isnt an event per
se, is getting a ticket for the Dream Vacation Raffle. Tickets
are $100 and enter you in for 12 chances to win a $5,000
travel voucher. There will be an open house at the Strathmore Golf Course on April 21 where people will be able to
find out more about the games, and the draw for the raffle
will be happening.
Other events happening include the Easy Going Open
golf tournament on May 30, and the Beatles Tribute concert coming on June 20.
We welcome people to participate as participants certainly but theres all kind of opportunities for them to volunteer and share what time they have and what skills they
have, we would love to hear from them, said Ledene.
All the committee is asking of people is that they just
help where they can. A volunteer form can be found online
at 2015strathmoregames.ca. There are different areas to
volunteer in and the shifts can work around what each volunteer is available for. If youre interested in volunteering
you can contact Bruce Bishop at 403-888-9914. The committee has a goal of raising $1.3 million. Currently, thanks
to gifts in kind, grants, donations and fundraising efforts
they are just shy of $1 million. Ledene expressed thanks to
the many businesses that have supported all of the events
organized.

Election ready!
Wildrose leader Brian Jean (l) and Strathmore-Brooks candidate Derek Fildebrandt announced on April 7 that their party will be ready and prepared for the
election that has been called by Premier Jim Prentice for May 5. Strathmore
was the first stop on the election tour for Jean.

Alberta Party candidate

announces intentions
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Einar Davison, who is well known in the community of
Hussar, has put his name forward as the Strathmore-Brooks
candidate for the Alberta Party. Davison first began his political career in 1997 when he met Grant Mitchell, then leader
of the Liberal party. Davison found he
believed in a lot of the views the party
talked about and so he became a Liberal.
As new leaders came along Davison
said the ideals and ideas of those leaders didnt really mesh anymore with
him, and for about 10 years he wasnt
involved in politics.
When the Alberta Party came along
it resonated with me, I liked what they
were talking about, democracy with
more decorum. Instead of people trying to take down the government, we
would try and work together for the
benefit of Albertans, said Davison.
During the last election the Alberta Party had just started out and was
mostly in the city, and so while he was
supportive, there was no one for him
to vote for.
I didnt feel the Wildrose were going to be much better
than the PCs so I was one of those that held my nose and
voted PC last election, with great regret, said Davison.
This election he has decided he wants to be the face of
the Alberta Party for this area, and so his campaigning has
begun. Davison believes Albertans need a choice. There are

two right wing parties and he feels there isnt really anybody
for the centre anymore. He became tired of the parties in the
legislature that appeared to be not as concerned about serving the people of Alberta, and says if elected he would try to
eliminate a lot of the bureaucracy at the top.
Basically I believe in better government and less ideology, it seems to be that everyone is more concerned about
their own pet ideology as opposed to
running the government in a fiscally
and socially responsible manner, said
Davison.
If were going to be charged a
health care levy, said Davison, it really
should be going towards health care
as opposed to general revenue.
We want to take a more long-term
approach where we work to develop
a stronger economy, maintaining fiscal
responsibility, but not destroying our
social safety nets such as our health
care system, and taking good care of
education, said Davison.
I personally believe that education
should be about teaching children,
and healthcare about getting patients
better as opposed to just dollars and
cents, and I think we have gone too
far the other way where it is just dollars and cents.
I know we can do a lot better, its just that theyve been
there so long that they cant see how to do things differently
than they have for years and years now. They have had 40
years to show their value as the manager of our government
and economy, and they have done a deplorable job.

Cheadle residents concerned with speed limits

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Cheadle residents are becoming concerned with excessive speeding beyond
the 30 km/h that has been the maximum for a number of years in certain
areas.
A numbers of years ago the speed
limit on Railway Avenue in Cheadle between Valor Street and BarBeeJay property was reduced to 30 km an hour,
said Arnold Teunissen, a concerned
ratepayer in a letter to Wheatland
County.
He believes that now with further development occurring, there should be
limits as to where the 30 km/h zone
should be.
I believe that a 30 km/h should be
limited for use in playground zones
and school zones and maybe in some

areas where circumstances warrant

such restrictions, Teunissen. I do not
have a problem with the restrictions
between Valor Street and Highway 24
as properties are close to the street and
lots of obstruction exists. However, I
am asking for restriction between Valor
and BarBeeJay to be fully removed or
if it seems necessary to upgrade to 50
km/h.
Wheatland County Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin shared his view
on the situation.
Well currently its 30 km/h and there
is big trucks that go through there and
we want to keep the speed limit down.
I know there is two sides to the coin,
there are some residents that want to
keep it at 30 km/h and some that would
like it increased, said Parkin. Cheadle
is not a very long area, youre not looking at an eighth of a mile, its not like

youre going to lose a whole lot of time

going 30 km/h in that area and keeps
the issues with traffic (consistent).
He added that its primarily a safety
concern for the county.
Theres a lot of families there that
have little kids, so its a bit of a safety
concern for us and thats why the speed
limit is at 30 km/h, said Parkin.

Q: How much does a funeral cost?

A: This depends largely on the type of service you
choose, and on the possible disbursements.
For any service, there will be charges for
professional services, the use of facilities
and equipment, and for a casket or cremation
receptacle. These costs will vary depending
on the type of service you choose. Other costs
include placing obituaries in the newspapers,
flowers, honorariums for the church, clergy,
and musicians, cemetery charges, burial
receptacles, cremation charges, cremation
urns, embalming, viewing and visitation,
slideshows, and funeral service videos. As
well, there may be additional costs for custom
service folders and other merchandise, though
many of these are completely optional. While
some of these items have an assigned value,
for most of them the cost will depend entirely
on what the family decides.

Grant funding announced

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Catherine Walsh, program coordinator for Strathmore FCSS, presented
council with a list of the United Way
2015 grant funding recipients. Every
year Strathmore is granted funds based
on the towns population. This year a
total of $52,700 will be distributed between the groups and organizations,
which include: the Friends of Brentwood School Society; the Strathmore
Family Outdoor Rink committee; Strathmore Frozen Meals on Wheels; Accredited Supports to the community- Healthy
Families; Growing Families Society- Life
Skills program; Hope Bridges Society
for Creative and Continued Learning;
Hope Community Covenant ChurchSchool Fuel; Strathmore Municipal Library; Youth Club of Strathmore; Bow
Valley College; Community Crisis Society; Project H.O.P.E; and the Strathmore
Wheatland Addictions Team.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Councillor Brad Walls told council he
would like to have a legal team come in
and refresh everyone on their roles and
responsibilities on council.
Unknowingly we sometimes cross
that imaginary line, I am guilty of it myself. This is just a good reset were
midway now, it probably wouldnt hurt
to refresh, said Walls.
Councillor Bob Sobol suggested that
council be specific on what areas they
would like to focus on, and stated that
the answers to some of the questions
could be found in one of the many policies the town is governed by.
Councillor Denise Peterson suggested
that online instruction, prepared by law-

yers, in regards to code and conduct by

the Municipal Government Act should
also be considered as a possibility to reoutlining some of those roles.
Walls said the reason he would like
it to be in person is so that everyone is
there and hearing the same information
and then can talk about it afterwards if
they are unclear on parts of it. A motion
was made and passed to have administration prepare a report outlining the
costs of bringing in a lawyer to discuss
roles and responsibilities.
SAYING THANKS
In December Savanah Sandri made
a donation request to council to help
fund her trip to compete in show jumping in California. On April 1 Sandri was
back in the council chambers to thank
council again for their support, tell them
how she had done, and present them
with framed mementos of her, her horse
Chili and one of her ribbons.
When I was down there I won five
first place ribbons and 20 clear round
ribbons, clear round means I didnt
knock down any poles so Im really
proud of that, said Sandri.
Later this year the teen will compete
in one of the Spruce Meadows Classics.

April is Oral Health Month. Good oral health

begins during pregnancy. Mothers-to-be need
adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D to build
strong bones and teeth. In young children, parents
should brush their teeth for them until they are able
to do a good job themselvesaround the age of 6
or 7. Teach them how to floss as well. Good oral
hygiene can translate into good general health.
December 2014 saw the 60th anniversary of the
discovery of the Salk polio vaccine. Prior to that
time, the approach of summer meant polio season.
Todays parents cant begin to understand the
horror parents then felt about the possibility of their
children being inflicted with polio because prior to
the vaccine, the disease crippled 35,000 children
every year.
When the elderly start showing signs of dementia
(memory loss, confusion, loss of ability to do
everyday tasks, apathy and withdrawal, problems
with language), its important to rule out causes that
might be controllable.
The problem might be medication. As we age, our
bodies handle drugs a little more slowly so simply a
reduction in dose might be necessary. Anti-anxiety
drugs, sedatives, narcotics, anti-seizure drugs and
even some antibiotics can cause dementia. Our
pharmacists would be glad to check your drug
profile for you.
Our pharmacists can review your drug record for
those that may cause potential dementia problems.
We are never too busy to talk to your about your
medications.

Wheatland County supports changing water regulations

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Alberta Health Services is proposing changes to the provinces drinking regulatory framework, and suggest
that Wheatland County submit a letter
to support the new standards of water
measurable outcomes.
I think its a matter of the Government of Alberta pushing for stronger
drinking water and the county is a
supporter of that and wanted to make
sure that drinking water standards are
current and maintained at a safe level
for our residence to have the highest
quality possible, said Alan Parkin,
Wheatland County Chief Administrative officer. (Comparatively), bottled
water has no regulations and you can
put anything in there and sell it.
Parkin added that the countys budget does include high standards of
drinking water for the area residences.
The situation that has been presented by the Alberta Government is that
under the current system, Environmental and Sustainable Resource Developments (ESRD) plans have been

primarily prescriptive ones that have a

one-size-fits all approach.
Therefore, the pressure rises on
smaller systems that has an area population of 500 people that have to meet
those requirements of the Potable Water Regulations in regards to a higher
cost to operate the system.
However, to run a smaller system
may be disadvantageous in one respect: a smaller system may be unable
to adapt to new technologies.
STUDENT PLANNER
Wheatland County administration
is seeking $35,000 combined, funded
through taxes, for a summer student
planner and a fall co-op student for
2015. It was brought up to council because of the unsuccessful attempt by
Planning and Development departments to secure funding for a planning
intern for 2015.
Administration requested that the
funding should instead go to a summer planning and fall co-op student.
The student planner would be paid
based on the Grid H5 scale.
Wheatland County is just waiting on

the decision from the federal grant,

which will assist in the subsidization
of the summer planning student, and
if it goes through, $3,060 of it will be
allocated to the summer student position ($17,500), which will reduce costs
as a result of the grant funding assistance.
INVOICE FROM STRATHMORE
FIRE DEPARTMENT
This topic was brought up to Wheatland County Council to give the approval to not pay an invoice in the
amount of $7,353 from the Strathmore
Fire Department for putting out a vehicle fire on Feb. 23. The Town of Strathmore submitted an invoice of $850/
hour for three fire apparatuses that
were used for a total of two hours and
53 minutes
The invoice was a result of the
Strathmore Fire Department responding to a rural call that involved a gar-

OFFICE REPAIRS
As a result of one of the development
officers being moved, the county will
be installing a partition between the
two office spaces to allow for smaller
spaces for contracting consultants and
provide an adequate amount of space
for the remaining developing officer.
CEMETERY BUDGET REVISIONS
Wheatland County was asked to revise the maintenance budget for cemeteries in the areas. The revision would
include an additional $4,400 in operating costs for the Gleichen and Eventide cemeteries as well as Rosebuds.
Also, the county was asked to provide additional funding of $2,400
through taxes, with the remainder
coming from interest earned in the
cemetery care fund.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS

~ Annabelle Armstrong

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Annabelle Ornburns ancestors on her fathers
side originated from Prussia and Wales. According to Wikipedia, Gwydir Castle in Wales has had
a fortification there since AD 600. It was once
owned by ancestors of her father, Floyd Ornburn
who was born in Renick, Miss. on Aug. 24, 1892.
His ancestors immigrated to Missouri in the early 1700s. He was raised and schooled here, before taking training as a steam engineer; he then
worked on the railroads in the U.S. as a fireman for
several years, before moving to Canada in 1902.
His uncle L.P. Schooling, also born in Missouri,
had immigrated to Alberta earlier and farmed
land in the Hussar area. He persuaded Floyd to
join him, and Floyd worked for his uncle for several years, breaking hundreds of acres of prairie
sod in the Hussar/Bassano areas. In the winter, he
worked as a fireman on the CP Railroad between
Calgary, Medicine Hat, and Swift Current, before
deciding to take up farming, and purchasing his
own land five miles east of Standard.
Annabelles grandparents on her mothers side
were Bill and Mary (nee Kemple) Drysdale. The
Kemples emigrated from
Ireland to Missouri in the
1700s, during the potato
famine. Bill Drysdale emigrated from England to
America at around the
same time. Bill and Mary
met in Missouri, and were
married there, and raised
their family, before buying
land from CPR in 1914, and
homesteading with their
family on their farm, three
miles east of Standard.
Their daughter Julia Drysdale (Annabelles mother) born in Blockow, Miss.
in 1899, moved with her family to Alberta at the
age of 15. She first met Floyd at various functions in Standard and they were married on Dec.
2,1919. They lived and farmed on Floyds land,
and raised six daughters. They became naturalized Canadians in 1936.
Their daughter Annabelle was born March 28,
1924 at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, the second
of six daughters. She grew up on the family farm,
attended Long Beach School just east of Standard
through Grade 9, followed by a year at Standard,
then two more years at Cluny Dorm thru Grade
12. When she was 14 years old, her father took
her to the Mayo Clinic to receive treatment for a
very serious ear infection. The doctors were unable to save her hearing in her right ear, but were
able to save the hearing in her left ear.
She took teachers training in Calgary in 1944/45,
followed by summer training in 1946 at the University of Edmonton. She taught all grades through
Grade 9, at the Two Bar School in Wintering Hills
from 1944 to 1947. Here she met William Lester
Armstrong, known as Buster Armstrong, born
Aug. 24,1922 to parents Christopher and Lula May
(nee Still) Armstrong. The Chris Armstrong family had moved from Oregon to Alberta in 1919,
and were the first real farmers in the Wintering
Hills area, as originally it was all ranching country. They homesteaded where the current farm is
located, ten miles north and one mile east of Hussar. Originally, it was a mixed farm with grain and
cattle, but nowadays there are no cattle.
Buster attended the Wintering Hills school two
miles east of the farm, then helped his father, before joining the RCAF at age 18. He took training
as ground crew and wireless operator in Calgary
and Ottawa, before being posted to Europe in
April 1944, where he saw active duty on the Western Front. He was there on D-Day, working over

18 hour days to keep the planes flying He arrived

home safely in September 1945.
Buster and Annabelle met at a dance in November 1945, and again at the Christmas concert a
month later, both held at the Two Bar School in
Wintering Hills, where Annabelle was a teacher.
She had organized the dance at the school, to
raise funds for the Red Cross and towards the expenses for the Christmas concert. Buster on his
guitar, with his sister Helen McDonald on the piano, played for both the dance and the concert! Romance blossomed and they were married a year
later, at Gleichen United Church on Dec. 29, 1946.
Annabelle finished teaching the school year, and
then retired to the farm to start their family of
three sons and a daughter - Bill, Ben, Ricky and
Patricia. At the age of 15, Bill became very ill with
a Pituitary tumour and almost died, but thank
God he did recover with the assistance of three
specialists. He now lives with Annabelle in the
original house. Buster built their home the year
of 1949/1950, from the foundation up, assisted by
his brother Adam. Originally built as a two-story
house, he renovated it in 1978, removing the top
floor so that it became a ranch-style building. He
had suffered a very severe heart attack in 1971,
and it took a good couple of
years for him to recover fully. His sons, and neighbours,
ran the farm while he was
recuperating. By the end of
three years, Annabelle was a
nervous wreck from worrying about Buster, so to give
her mind something else
to focus on, she became a
community reporter for 15
years with the newspapers
in Strathmore, Bassano and
Drumheller.
An avid gardener all her
life, she also wrote a gardening column. On the
side, she sold Fuller Brush and Rawleigh Products, in an area from home to Drumheller and
East Coulee. Buster and Annabelle celebrated
their 35th Wedding Anniversary with family and
friends, a month early in Hussar, because of Busters failing health, and he passed away on Dec. 20,
1981 leaving Annabelle with four grandchildren.
She now has nine great-grandchildren.
In 1992, Annabelle married Alvin Slattery and
moved to Peachland, B.C. Following his death in
1997, she moved back to the farm, where she now
lives with her son Bill. Other sons, Ben and wife
Terry own their own farm 1.5 miles west, Rick
and wife Harriet run the family farm and raise
cattle at their ranch in Gem. Daughter Patricia was
a well-respected industrial draftsman in Calgary,
until she was stricken with MS that ended her career and her life on April 2, 2009 at the young age
of 56.
Annabelle and Buster were original founding
members of the Surface Rights Group, formed
to have more say in negotiations with Oil & Gas
Companies, when they rented farmland. Thanks
to his Air Force training, Buster was a very accomplished electrician, and wired their home and
many others, when electricity came to the area.
Buster represented District Seven as a councillor
in the 60s in what is now Wheatland County, and
was a board member of Hussar Credit Union (now
Chinook Credit Union). Both were active members of Our Saviours Church in Hussar. Annabelle
was a frequent delegate at several church conferences, and a member of Women of Unifarm (UFA).
She is now an active member of the church ELW
and the Sundowners Seniors Club in Hussar. She
is very happy to be with family and good friends.
The main changes in the area include the loss of
small family farms and the highly technical equipment being used for farming.

Council debates over spring workshop retreat

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A special town council meeting was held on
March 24 to discuss the spring workshop, and
the possibility of going on a retreat out of town.
Councillors were split with half in favour and half
opposed to the idea.
Councillor Brad Walls stated that by going away
it would give him and his fellow councillors the
opportunity to focus more on the task at hand,
without having the distractions that come from
being so close to home.
I think its important though for us to be focused on our task and really spend the time, and
I think we can be focused here, but I think its a
little more difficult, said Walls.
He also feels that by going away it provides
council with a chance to team-build and network
on a more relaxed basis.
Councillor Bob Sobol was opposed to going out
of town, but did agree that council could benefit
from team-building, done in a separate planned
and organized event.
I was a big promoter of not going out of town
as well. I think for the first year of a new council
its a good thing in the sense that there is some
team-building regardless of whether it is organized or not, you just get to talk on a more relaxed
basis to your fellow councilors, said Councillor
Steve Grajczyk.
I dont think we should go every year, just once
when council gets elected.
He said once you divide the money, which at
the lowest was just over $6,000 to go to Canmore,
is miniscule over a four-year period.
Councillor Pat Fule said when he ran for council
there were a lot of comments about per diems and
going away for retreats that were paid for and he
said he made a promise then to not support this.
I dont believe I need to be at a retreat to know
and respect my fellow councillors, I know what
are the important items for each councillor, what
things are important to them as far as the towns
concerned, we all do our work on our committees.
I dont think we have to go away to be the getalong gang to be a good council, we can do that
by staying here in town, said Fule.
He continued to say that as far as being focused,
the town elected them to work for the town and
said if council cant do a good job creating a budget in their own town then theres something

wrong.
My rationale for that is because were so close
to our familys concerns and were so close to being able to just run home for a couple of minutes,
where if youre out of town youre really on the
actual (task), said Walls.
Councillor Denise Peterson, who was in attendance via speakerphone, said she was involved
in the session in April 2014, and felt there was a
great deal left behind on the table. She didnt find
it focused, creative, motivating, inspiring or contemplative. She said it got the job done and met
challenges, but that was because of the great staff
and their organizing.
A retreat is a planning session, a visioning session, its not just a budget session and I think
that we can very easily misconstrue the process
to connect the fact of going or not going to budget numbers when we know full well there are a
multiplicity of factors that impact our budget not
just the $7,000 that seven councillors and administration going away, that barely equates to my
personal budget on council, said Peterson.
Last year she didnt use her personal budget,
and she would be prepared to use her own if
thats the case.
Peterson said she also thinks that in planning
retreats in the past there was a lot of good planning, guidance and a strong coaching component
that helped.
I think it has a lot to do with more than just
going away, Councillor Fule is right, we can do the
same job that weve always done, but I think we
need to do a better job than we have been doing
and I think we can do that if were away, I dont
care where it is, said Peterson.
I think that spending that very small amount of
money comparatively to the huge responsibility
that we carry is something that we can prove to
our community that we can do better, and we can
do well and I think retreats can teach us how to
use it to the benefit (of the community).
Fule continued to reiterate that he feels council
has done a good job, and are still doing a good
job and that in his opinion it isnt necessary to go
on a retreat.
Mayor Michael Ell said an item brought to his
attention is the amount of money going out of the
community, and with the strained economic situation in the province they should consider supporting local businesses.
Another area of concern for Ell is spending that

much money at this point, but he was in favour of the concept of coming up with a solution and doing some teambuilding, and create a vision on where they want to go as a
council and a town.
Fule made a motion to host the workshop in town, which
was defeated. A second motion was made to host it in Canmore, which was also defeated.
Grajczyk, who was in favour of going on a retreat, made a
new motion to reconsider the motion of holding the workshop in Strathmore, which was approved, with Walls opposed.
The reason I did this is we could go on forever here, lets
get on with it, lets make a decision, said Grajczyk.
Peterson said in the interest of going forward and compromise she voted in favour of the motion.

New rail tours to depart from Aspen Crossing

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Aspen Crossing is now offering eight new and
different themed train excursions in Mossleigh.
Jason Thornhill, founder of Aspen Crossing, has
always had a passion for trains, stemming from
childhood memories of sitting on his dads shoulders to watch the CPR trains running through the
familys 300 acre farm.
Thornhill had no idea how much he would miss
the sounds of the trains after the last one made
its way through Mossleigh in 2002. It was while
studying horticulture that he was amazed to discover the integral part it played in the railway
history and how settlers were beckoned to the
prairies and its fertile lands.
His love for the land and passion for trains
were the driving force behind his idea of creating Aspen Crossing. Now in its 11th year, theres
a nursery, gift shop, 1887 Pullman Dining car
that once belonged to John Diefenbaker- three
luxury Caboose cabins for rent and 85 serviced
campsites.
This latest extension of Thornhills desire to
bring people to the prairies is the addition of his
own railway, offering themed excursions to help

bring people back to their roots and learning

more about their Heritage.
Rural tourism in Alberta is gaining big strides,
with so many gems to be found outside of the
usual tourist attractions, like the Calgary Stampede and Banff. Were less than an hour from the
city centre of Calgary. So visitors can easily come
out for a day, week, or weekend, and have a variety of things to see and do! said Thornhill.
The inaugural trip is scheduled for May 15
and the themed excursions will begin on May 16
and run every weekend. During July and August
a circus-themed train will also be offered every
Wednesday.
The rail tours being offered are: a Wine & Cheese
Train Tour which will feature wines and appetizers; Ales on Rails Train Tour featuring ales and
appetizers; the Prairie Tour which will provide
historical and cultural insights; the Circus Train
where there will be face painting, magicians, and
more; Meals in the Field is a four-hour tour with
authentic prairie lunch; the Alberta Special is four
hours, and includes dinner with locally sourced
food; the Dinner Theatre will include dinner and
a theatre performance; and lastly there will be a
winter themed excursion, with more details on it
to be released at a later date.

Chamber ready to meet business community needs

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Rumours have circulated
around town about the Strathmore and District Chamber of
Commerce and its future in
the area.
There have been allegations that money is running
out and membership is at an
all-time low.
While new Chamber President, Waldo Muoz, owner
of Waldos Imaging, agrees
the chamber is in trouble,
he knows it can be turned
around.
Muoz, who was a part
of the Calgary Chamber of
Commerce, 1998-2003, said
it takes someone with a business mind to run the organization.
He believes that there was

poor management in the past

and that from a business
point of view the person
who made those decisions
didnt know how to run a
business, or they would not
have made some of the decisions they did.
I looked into it, I am
not blind to what is going
on but I think with a little
hard work, we (the chamber
board of directors) can turn it
around. It is not going to be
easy but I have never backed
down from a challenge and I
never will, said Muoz. As
the new president, I will fix
what needs to be fixed, but
it will take time. I need the
entire support of the community. Unlike past presidents
and board members, the
members of the chamber can
hold me accountable for my

decisions.
Muoz thinks there is a lot of
potential for growth in this town.
However, he also sees there is a
lot of need in the community for
an organization like the chamber.
There are several things that
Muoz would like to see happen
in Strathmore through the chamber and they are: open a tourism
office; start a temporary job bank

and an employment agency.

Muoz would like to see a
youth drop-in centre created.
Id like a shelter for kids who
might be in trouble so they have
a place to go without having to
hang around a back alley, he
said.
With summer right around the
corner, Muoz has a few things
in mind; they include, a golf tournament, a Salsa Fest, and some

Advance Payments Program

improved for 2015
FROM THE OFFICE OF
KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin
Sorenson, Minister of State
(Finance) and Member of
Parliament (Crowfoot) is
highlighting major enhancements to the Advance Payments Program (APP) for
farmers that will improve
and streamline administration, provide greater flexibility and more repayment
options, and ease access to
the program.
These improvements to
the APP are part of the coming into force of Bill C-18,
the Agricultural Growth Act
our Conservative Government recently passed in
Parliament, said Sorenson.
The Act modernizes and
strengthens federal agriculture legislation, supports
innovation in the Canadian
agriculture industry and enhances global market opportunities. Many of the
changes implemented under
the Act have taken effect on
April 1 for the 2015 Program
Year. I am most pleased that

these improvements are in

place in time to help producers plan for the new production year.
The APP is a federal loan
guarantee program that
helps agricultural producers
benefit from the best market conditions by improving
their cash flow throughout
the year.
Starting April 1, producers
can now request advances
for all their commodities
through one application
with a single administrator,
significantly reducing their
paper burden.
In addition, there is no
longer a requirement for a
farmer to be principally occupied in farming in order
to utilize APP.
Across Canada, more than
$1.9 billion in advances has
been provided to close to
21,000 producers for the
2014 program year to date.
For a full list of improvements, please visit the Advance Payments Programs

business seminars. More details

regarding these events will be released in the future.
There is a suggestion box in
the chamber office. If people
have any comments or suggestions, he recommends they to
stop by and leave them in the
box. He promises to read each
one personally and he will take
all points presented into consideration.

Mosquito program
returns to Langdon
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The mosquito program is
coming back to the Langdon
area this year and is now
listed as a core service with
Rocky View County. Councillor for the area Rolly Ashdown said he has brought
it up in budget over the last
couple years and is pleased
to see that is now a fixed
budget item.
Its recognized as something that the people of
Langdon enjoy and it helps
the problem a lot. Theres a
lot of standing water in and
around the Langdon area
and thats where mosquitoes
come from basically, said
Ashdown.
According to Jeff Fleischer, Rocky View County Agricultural Services team lead,
the mosquito reduction program in Langdon consists
of public education, monitoring of mosquito larvae,
control of larval mosquitoes
and surveillance of adult
mosquitoes.
The program has three
stages:
identifying
the
hotspots where significant
larvae populations exist;
applying the larvicide; and
then monitoring and reapplying as necessary. The
county monitors the area
from May until September.
Larvicide is the most effective and efficient means of
controlling the mosquitoes.
It is applied to the pools of
standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs, killing the larvae and thus preventing the future presence
of adult mosquitoes. It also

has little to no impact on

other life forms.
In the past it has been
pretty effective and it makes
summer a little bit more
bearable because theres
not as many mosquitoes
around, said Ashdown.
The mosquitoes were unbearable, they were keeping
kids in at recess time, you
couldnt open the windows
in your vehicle, mosquitoes
were just swarming, it was
really quite unbelievable.
Residents of Langdon are
also asked to do their part
in helping control the problem.
We have been encouraging the residents of Langdon to take some preventative measures on their
own properties to eliminate
standing water, minimize
exposure and apply an insect repellant that contains
DEET, said Fleischer.
We currently inspect all
of the standing water on
county-owned land within
the Hamlet of Langdon for
mosquito larvae.
If the
number of mosquito larvae
found exceeds prescribed
threshold levels, larvicide
treatments are initiated.
We also monitor the
adult mosquito numbers inside the hamlet as well as
outside the area to help determine the effectiveness of
the program.
Last year alone Fleischer
said Langdon saw an overall reduction in the adult
mosquito population by 18
per cent. More information
about the program can be
found at www.rockyview.

A very lucky Grade 4 class at Westmount School won the chance to play
floor hockey with Calgary Flames alumni Jeff Shantz and Harvey the Hound,
while also receiving new floor hockey
gear for the school through the Flames
at School program sponsored by Chevron on April 2.
So what it is, is an online learning

program, weve worked with teachers

and groups that help us build programs
for students that are curriculum-based,
said Tonya Young, representative from
Flames Foundation for Life.
Kids from the school division could
go online, log on, their teachers can
download an online program and
theres a wide variety of different programs from math to stretching, gym to
teamwork, all based on hockey.
Young admits that some of the cours-

you add hockey to the program it becomes more enjoyable.
The numbers are not all that interesting but when you put hockey facts
in it, they can be, said Young. Every
time one of the teachers downloads
and completes program in their class,
they were entered in a draw to win and
we had two grand prize winners and
Westmount was one of the grand prize
winners with a brand new set of floor
hockey equipment.
She stated that it was important to
reach out to the rural area and they
were very excited when a Strathmore
school was announced.
We were really excited, we think the
rural and small towns that are surrounding Calgary are super important for so
many different reasons, said Young. It
was a random draw done by a group in
Ontario that controls all the data so we
had no idea until we saw the address of
the winning school.
To have a group like this outside the
city that we can come out here and get
everybody involved and to bring the
Flames atmosphere out here was awesome.

Flash back to 1975

Strathmore resident Bill Wallace found a Dec.
29, 1975 Calgary Herald paper in his home.
When flipping through the paper to see what
was news back then, the cost of some of the
items shocked him, like the one stating a carton of cigarettes was selling for $5.17. Other
shocking prices included .88/lb for ground
beef, $1.88/lb for steak, dog food selling for .85
cents for four cans, and the cost of an adult
transit fare was only .35 cents.

RESURRECTION
Practice Resurrection. A
favourite poem ends with
those two words. There was
something strange about the
combination the first time I
read them. Isnt resurrection
something we celebrate (past
tense)? Or isnt it something
we look forward to (future
tense)?
Practice Resurrection
(present tense)? I mean
havent followers of Jesus
been marking this very week
for over 2,000 years in celebration and remembrance
of resurrection? Doesnt
resurrection bring a sense of
hope for what is to come?
What is poet Wendell Berry
getting at? In a word - reality.
The reality that resurrection
goes beyond past, present
and future tense. Its that big.
In fact, its so big its goes
beyond Easter celebrations
and remembrances. Its bigger than the Church. It shines
light in all dark places. It
exposes brokenness, sin, and
death itself. It points to life

itself and offers the promise

of everything made new.
Practice Resurrection reminds me that life is breaking
into the everyday. Its something I practice in my marriage, with my neighbours,
with my kids, in the workplace. Its something students
can experience in the halls
of their schools, lunchrooms
and playgrounds. Its wider
than our big prairie sky and
higher than the Rocky Mountains themselves.
What would happen if we
would practice resurrection? What if Strathmore
was known as a community
marked by such words? What
if we were reminded of the
promise of Easter more than
once a year - even every
day? The second century
saint, Irenaeus, wrote, the
glory of God is a human being
fully alive.
How might you practice resurrection? Be fully alive.

The Holy Cross Collegiate girls rugby team is

entering their first year of league play and are
confident they can keep games close, but they
know the battle level will have to be high.
For us there is a lot of advancement from the
first to the second year. They want to learn and
thats a lot easier for me to coach, said head
coach Brennan Grasdahl. I think well fare well.
We played a couple of teams in a tournament last
year and beat the ones that are in our league this
year.
Grasdahl expects the girls to play a fast and aggressive style of game.
If were faster than everybody and hit harder,
its going to be a better result than
if were just laid back and slow.
The competition from tournament to league
play is going to be an adjustment for a lot of the
players as there will be some tough teams.
Its going to be a lot tougher, a lot more steeper
competition. Well be playing bigger schools, but I
think they can do it, said Grasdahl.
The goal for the team is to develop the girls as
much as possible to advance their skills and to

keep the program running.

We got a lot of younger girls this year and I
want to advance them to keep the program going
and keep a competitive level, said Grasdahl. I
want them to win its a lot more fun winning,
and as coach I teach them the tools, making sure
they know its team before person.
He said that the success will lie in letting other
teams know that they are out to win and to compete.
If we can have some steep competition and let
it be known were contenders and not a joke
thats our goal this year is to set our name out
there and let everyone know were here, said
Grasdahl.
For the girls on the team, it will be key in practices to work on staying in shape so they can last
longer in games.
Conditioning is big, were always running, its
not like football where there are breaks in between downs, said Grasdahl. I want to introduce
a couple of new systems and were switching from
7s last year to 12s this year and have to introduce
five new positions.
Their season will begin on the week of April 13
with an exhibition match against the Foundation
for the Charter Academy at Holy Cross Collegiate.

Hawks badminton
want fit players
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks badminton

team is hopeful that their players will compete
hard in their upcoming tournament matches, but
knows there will be a lot of developing to do with
the new players.
This year weve split it up into three categories, Grades 7-8, 9 and senior high. Basically were
doing max volume in numbers, said head coach
Daniel Patterson. Basically in Grades 7-8, were
working on fundamental skill, just so they know
how to hit the bird properly and how to play defense, easy coordination so they can get the hang
of it.
As the players reach Grade 9, they begin to
learn strategies.
We work on more basic strategy, they usually
have a good foundation of where the lines already
are, and we dont have to spend too much time on
that, said Patterson. Then we get to senior high
where we do our 1-on-1 training, where we do a

lot of footwork and basically specialization to see

what theyre really good at.
Patterson stresses a lot of fitness on the players
so that the drills are practiced with more stability.
Each grade has a whole bunch of fitness and
strength conditioning at the beginning of the season because we want to get their fitness up so that
they can do the drills that were doing and making
sure theyre physically fit to play badminton, said
Patterson.
There are some high expectations for the senior
high level.
For our senior highs, especially because theyve
played the most, is provincials at least getting to
zones would be beneficial, said Patterson. Last
year we had a pretty decent showing, unfortunately we came up a little bit short with our goals.
With regards to our junior high, Grades 7
through 9, the thing is to have fun is the main
goal right now. Theres a lot of work that goes into
it, but just appreciating the game and what it is.
The teams will also be in the counties on April
22 as hosts and at Strathmore High School.

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons have made history once again as for
the first time in the teams history they will represent the
Pacific region at the Telus Cup in Riviere-du-Loup, Que.
from April 20-26.
The Herd was able to sweep the Pacific Region Finals
with a 4-2 win on April 3 and a 5-0 victory on April 4
over the Vancouver NE Chiefs to book their trip to the
national championship.
Bisons assistant coach Sandy Henry admitted the start
could have been better in the opening game, but he
liked how the boys were able to work through that and
take care of business.
(In Game 1), it was a little closer than it shouldve
been, we didnt do as good a job capitalizing on our
chances we were creating and left them in it. They got
one on the power play and then its a game, said Henry.
I thought we took care of business pretty good, maybe
werent quite as good as the second. In third, the guys
got a couple goal lead, (and) were able to shut it down.
According to Henry, it was a good way to start the
series.
I dont think we could have gone out any better, said
Henry. We went in their end and were pretty relentless,
they had a pretty hard time with us and I think we started to make our identity known to them and frustrated
them a little bit.
They got back in that game I think we had a few
more penalties than we have been getting.
The Bisons limited the Chiefs chances in the final
frame and were able to take control from there.

In the third, we were confident that were going to get

the effort we needed, said Henry. I think our conditioning was good and we jumped out and got a couple of
goals on them and were able to pull it off.
The Chiefs started the second game with some push
early on as it appeared they had no quit in them, but the
Bisons were able to start where they left off in Game 1
to weather the attack.
They had some push early in the game (and) werent
going to give up, but again we got the first goal and built
from there and played out our game plan, said Henry.
(We) finished checks (we) frustrated them by what
we did with the puck.
The Telus Cup will be a new experience for the whole
team, but having head coach Dan MacDonald being
there before, it will help immensely with preparation.
Its a bit surreal for us, Ive certainly never been there
before but Dan has, and has echoed that based on his
experience this team really started to develop the parts
needed to be successful, said Henry. Even before the
playoffs, he believed that we could have a real long run
as long as our consistency stayed there and stayed on the
plan for things that we were good at. As it turns out he
was 100 per cent right.
The coaching staff noticed that the boys are not done
yet as the focus is still on bringing home the Telus Cup.
Its fun to have championships and keep going, but at
the same time when we got on the bus, I think they all
see they want to continue on, and by no means theyve
done enough yet, said Henry. They want to make sure
theyre a good representation for the Pacific region and
think they have a real good chance to win the whole
thing.

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

It was a hugely successful season for the
Rocky Mountain Raiders as they captured
a silver medal at the Western Canadian
Bantam AAA Championships in Winnipeg
over the Easter weekend.
Despite losing 6-0 in the gold medal
game, head coach Mickey Kluner was
proud of his teams performance at the
tournament.
Obviously you want to win, but you
want to have a memorable experience too
and both of those (things happened), said
Kluner. Outside the final game where
we struggled to have a good start and it
kind of dug us into a deep hole as it went
on the weekend was a phenomenal success.
The Raiders just could not find any
rhythm in the gold medal game.
We were against a team that was a perennial powerhouse and they had very
high-end talent (which) proved to be too
much for us on that day, said Kluner.
They scored two goals in the first and we
couldnt find our mojo early on and the
game got out of hand in the second as they
scored a couple more.
The local Strathmore and Wheatland
players Joel Krahenbil, Cole Clayton, Lucas Muenchrath, Tyler Strath and Kelton
Travis, along with Langdons Brady Skiffington all took their impactful seasons
into the tournament and were difference
makers.
It was no different than the entire year,
they were a major contributing portion of
our team and they found success, said
Kluner. They had some great moments for
our team, the six of them this past weekend. Our defense played well with the
three of them contributing in huge fashion.
Krahenbil has two goals, two assists in
the final round robin game against Winnipeg to secure our spot in the gold medal
game, that was huge for us.
Kluner added that even thought they
did not win the tournament, winning the
league was really the highlight of the
teams year.
The Raiders were selected as next years
western hosts and there will be many spots
to fill, as there are only two returnees next
season.

The Crowther Memorial Junior High

Schools badminton teams are going to
be strong in this short season but know
that there will be ongoing development
for the younger group.
We still have one team at Crowther
Memorial, breaking it down within the
age groups, there is the bantam, midgets and juvenile. Each team has their
own coaches, Travis Ericksteen and
Scott Koller have the Grade 9s, said
Brad Huntley, badminton coordinator.
Lori dArgent, Rod Neaves and myself run the Grade 8s and Ivan Wright
and Anne Paskevich run the Grade 7s.
The three teams have been picked
for a while now, but being such short
season means limited practice time and
only two tournaments.
Unfortunately, we got one practice a
week per grade for two hours and there
is one day where we alternate. The
Grade 9s are done, theyre just identifying whos playing what, I do mine a little different, my team is already made,
were just ironing out spots for mixed
doubles, said Huntley. Grade 7s are
close because they get 60 kids try and
its the biggest in a while Ive had in
Grade 8.
There are cuts because of such big
groups. All the players are divided into
different categories of badminton.

There is boys and girls singles, doubles and mixed double and in each
youre allowed three entries into counties per division and thats what limits
your teams structure, said Huntley. In
the end, it works out to 12 boys and 12
girls for each age level and typically its
up to each coach.
He added that spares are a must on
the teams as they are a great asset to
have during practices and in case of injury.
We do three guys and girls spares
that practice with the teams and if
something happens before counties at
least they get to fill in. Id say each team
brings 28-30 kids, said Huntley.
The teams will be strong heading into
counties as most players have had experience from the previous year.
The Grade 9s are going to be fairly
strong this year. I coached them last
year and they were pretty successful in
Grade 8 last year, said Huntley. The
Grade 8s look like they have a lot of
potential with a couple of bright spots
on the team. The Grade 7s are fresh
and new so itll be interesting to see
how they pan out.
The Grade 7 and 8s will be hosting
counties at Strathmore High School and
the Grade 9s will be at Holy Cross Collegiate. A
ll games will be played on April 22,
which will determine who will go to
zones a week later.

Wheatland recognizes players

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Athletic Association

wrapped up their season up on April 3
with an awards banquet at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
There were a lot of first-year players
that really proved themselves over the
course of the year and were well deserving of their awards.
Wheatland Chiefs goaltender Nolan
Kent praised his coaches and teammates for his individual success and for
winning the midget Rookie of the Year
award.
Id like to thank my teammates and
my coaches this year for having faith in
me and Mack, said Kent. We had a really good year and could not asked for
a better group of guys.
It was a memorable year that Kent
and his teammates will never forget.
Probably winning the league championship, never won one before so it
was a special moment, said Kent. It
was expected from the start that we
would win it all and we did exactly
what we were suppose to do, Im just
really happy.
He was honoured to win the award.
It feels pretty good, I dont know
what else to say, Im lost for words,
said Kent. There could have been four
or five rookies on the team that could
have won it this year, I was just happy
to win it.

Tarvyd was honoured to take home the bantam Goalie of

the Year award on a team with a great new coaching staff.
(Cody Brown) a great coach, smart guy, it was nice to
have some young coaches to get a different perspective,
said Tarvyd. I had Keith Klemmensen for a number of years,
it was fun to have some funny guys.
Braves top sniper Kyle Crnkovic accredits his supporting
cast for his peewee Most Valuable Player award.
It feels great, a lot of thanks go out to my teammates and
coaches for making it all happen, said Crnkovic. I thought
my teammates really helped me out. I did some of it, but a
lot of (credit) goes to those guys.
The night was also special for longtime coaches Keith Klemmensen and Devin Olson, who are both stepping away
from coaching after this season. They were presented with
framed jerseys for their efforts with the organization.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Athletic Associations annual
3-on-3 tournament, which was slated to go this past weekend, was cancelled due to low numbers and players fulfilling other spring hockey commitments.

Learning from Kings!

The Strathmore Storm atom A team, through the Wheatland Kings family game contest, won a practice
and pizza party on March 19 with the junior B club. The festivities included Kings head coach Jeremy
Blumes running skill drills and a scrimmage shortly after.

Kings looking top

in spring camp
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings are holding

their spring camp from April 28-30 (711 p.m. each night) at the Strathmore
Family Centre and head coach Jeremy
Blumes expects it to be a competitive
camp as there are many spots to fill for
next season.
Weve probably got a dozen or so listed right now and were looking for close
to 80 were looking for guys that can
skate, think the game and most of all,
guys that have real good character, said
Blumes. Its an opportunity for the players to see what we have to offer in terms
of a junior B option as an organization.
Blumes added that there is a competition amongst junior B clubs in terms of
recruitment for players and to sell their
brand of hockey plays a contributing
factor in luring top talent.
Realistically, there is a lot of competition amongst junior B teams in terms
of recruiting players, said Blumes. Id
like to think that after one season back
in the league, we can be a development
program where youre going to see players moving on to the next level, having
fun and paying not even one tenth of
the cost to go play in the KIJHL or other

leagues.
The returning players have been notified to come back to this camp and compete for spots.
Weve told all of our returning players that we want them to attend because
a big part of recruiting is the guys that
youre going to be playing with and I
think we have a lot of good character
guys that come to the rink with smiles
on their faces and make it a fun place to
play, said Blumes. Our returnees will
be attending camp and I think theyre
going to be doing as much recruiting as
Im going to be.
He is expecting bigger things from the
returning cast.
We expect them to play next season
and play bigger roles than they did the
year before, but that being said, the great
thing about our game is its a competitive game and some of these younger
players come in and play their way up
the line-up, said Blumes. Its an audition for anybody, theres no guarantees
in this game and I think some of our
veteran players learnt that tough lesson
last year.
Blumes is looking for players born
during the years 1997 through 2000 to
attend the camp. The cost to register is
$50 a player.

Generals ready for Allan Cup

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Bentley Generals

of the Chinook Hockey
League are making backto-back appearances at
the Allan Cup and are
looking to get retribution
on the Clarenville Caribous, who beat them in
the semifinals a year ago.
Generals forward and
Strathmore native Keenan
Desmet, is confident in
the teams chances of being champions this time
around.
Ive been playing there
for three years and there
are four Strathmore guys
Brett Thurston and I
reside here that play up
there. Brett Robertson
and Kyle Sheen are from
Strathmore originally and
they moved on to Calgary, said Desmet. Bent-

ley is a great organization,

they treat us well there.
Weve been to the Allan
Cup the last three years
Ive been there and its a
class act organization.
Desmet likes the playing style that the senior
triple-A circuit provides
and knows there will be
some tough competition
at the tournament.
Going to the Allan Cup,
theres lots of ex-pro guys
and good hard hitting
hockey, said Desmet. I
call it the closest to old
style hockey as you can
get like the clutching and
grabbing, hitting guys
are a little bit slower but
its still great hockey and
its for the love of the
game still.
The Generals have added some new young guys
and he admits it will help
the team in what will be

a good challenge out east.

I think this year is
unique because we got
a tight knit group, everybody respects each other
and knows their roles on
the team and Clarenville
guys who are hosting it,
theyve been out to get us
the last four years, said
Desmet. Theyve set their
sights on us the first game
we play them and itll be
a good challenge for us.
There will be some familiarity with the teams,
but a lot of them have
gained new players.
Its all a surprise when
we get there, its pretty
much get on the ice and
see how good they are,
said Desmet.
The Allan Cup will run
from April 13-18 in Clarenville, NL. The Generals
will begin play against the
host Caribous on April 14.

Freda Ricard beloved wife, mother,

grandmother and great grandmother
passed away peacefully in her sleep
on Monday, March 30, 2015 at the age of 92 years.
She was predeceased by Lionel, her loving husband
of 55 years. Freda was born on October 31, 1922
near Hussar, Alberta. She attended school there, as
well as Cluny Dorm, and finished her high school
at Western Canada High in Calgary. Freda later
married Lionel and happily raised five children on
a farm in the Standard area. She enjoyed gardening, farming, sewing, curling, dancing, travelling the
world, and playing cards with friends. Freda was
also actively involved in the Standard Community.
After she left the farm Freda relocated to Calgary
and then to High River. She was a woman with good
friends, a loving family and many happy memories.
Freda mentioned many times over the past few
months that she felt lucky to have had such a wonderful life. She loved and was extremely proud of
her family, and is survived by her children: Barbara
(Barry), Joanne (Allan), Carol (Ray), Ron (Kenna) and
John (Colleen), as well as nine grandchildren and
twelve great grandchildren: Brent, Burton (Linh)
{Emma, Kaiya}, Roxanne (Brad) {Evan, Hayden},
Kim (Chris), Mark (Jill) {Lily, Joey}, Adam (Pam)
{Iggy, Ellie}, Jennifer (Tyler) {Grayson, Quinn},
Kyla and Luke {Rowan, Mila}. Freda will be sadly
missed as the larger-than-life matriarch of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the
Alzheimers Society of Calgary. A family celebration of her life will be held privately. Expressions of
sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the
