Introduction
INTRODUCTION: HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL
This is a reference manual on the design, detailing, and drawing of partition walls that are a part of any
building processed by the MBS software. A file is provided with this manual that contains the
processing of a building with six partition walls. This example is described in PE 9-00-8.
HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL TO PROCESS PARTITION WALLS
1. Make a sketch of the partition or partitions that you want to include in your building. The sketch
should be both plan and elevation views of the wall.
2. Read PE 9-00-3 on detailing partition walls. Set the desired detailing methods and detailing
parameters.
3. Read PE 9-00-4 on new marker for detailing data files. Add the markers and entries to the
appropriate files.
4. Enter the partition wall data. Please use the following guides.
- See PE 9-00-1 to view screens for data entry.
- See Plan View of six partitions on Pg H1.
(The H pages follow the Help, Files Tab)
- See a 3D drawing of the six partitions on Pg H2.
- See a framing drawing for each of the partitions on pages H3 to H8.
- See the input file for each of the partitions on Pgs H9 to H11.
- See the help file for the DESCTRL.IN file on Pgs H12 to H18.
5. As the program designs the partition walls, read PE 9-00-2 on partition wall design.
6. As the program prepares the erection drawings for partition walls, read PE 9-00-5 on partition wall
drawings.
7. To check the program output for your partition wall, see the partition wall examples, PE 9-00-6,
9-00-7, 9-00-8, and 9-00-9.

PROGRAM: DESCTRL, DESED, XDESCTRL
MANUAL: Design
ENHANCEMENT: How to enter Partition Data.
TO ACTIVATE: Currently active.
DESCRIPTION: Partition Wall information is entered in the Building Editor screens. The building
entry screens are accessed by making the DesCtrl the active item and double-clicking the
mouse, or press the <E> key on the keyboard. After entering the Job Title to use on Reports,
the Building Editor Menu appears. This menu has been rearranged to accommodate six sets
of information, which are called books. The partition wall book is the last book and is located at
the lower right of the menu as shown below.

Program Enhancments for Partition Walls

This can consist of up to six unique partition walls. For each partition the user will specify the
layout, framing members, bay spacings, girts, panels, colors, framed openings, partial walls and
intersections. Each screen is shown below with a description for each item on each screen.
Clicking on each partition button displays the partition screen. Each partition screen has the
<F1> help key and <ALT><F1> graphics help available.
A. PARTITION WALL - Layout, Framing
The first screen is the Partition Layout and Framing. This screen is shown below.

The partition orientation can be either Longitudinal or Transverse in orientation. The start and
end distances are entered for the wall, along with information about the start and end adjacent
wall Id and tie-in option. The wall side vs. offset is specified as 2 characters. The first
character specifies to which side of the location the wall framing occurs. The second
character specifies which side of the wall is the outside of wall. CL = centered on location
with left as outside, CR = centered on location with right as outside, RL = wall is to the right
of location with left side as outside, and LR = wall is to the left of location with right side as
outside. The quantity and locations of this wall are entered where locations are as measured
perpendicular to the wall. For the quantity to be more than one, the wall framing and tie-in
settings must be the same for all locations. The column depth is specified. The column type for

The partitions can intersect each other and continue on through each other. When a column
occurs at the intersection, then the column type and tie-in option must be specified. For
intersections occurring at a rigid frame interior column location, enter '-' as the added column
type.
NOTE: Intersecting partitions that continue on through each other without an added column
specified are designed and detailed to continue on through each other. There are no added
columns and girts are designed based on the bay spacing.
There are two other screens that have been updated to include partition data. The Code/Load
screen and Deflection Limit screen have been updated.
H. LOAD - Code, Loads
The Code, Loads screen now includes a setting for partition wind. The screen is shown
below. This applies to all designed components of the partition wall. Designed components
include: columns, girts, and panels.

9-00-2 Design of Partition Walls

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT
DATE: September 15, 2000
NUMBER: 9-00-2
PROGRAM: PARTDES, MPARTDES, XPARTDES
MANUAL: DESIGN
ENHANCEMENT: Design of partition walls
DESCRIPTION: The cell labeled PartDes on the design screen is used to design partition walls. This
program will design from one to six partition walls. The design input file is much like that for
endwalls. A new data line, number 8, describes the location of the partition walls, as shown
below. The help file describes each term in the input file.

Partition design is much like endwall design. Features available in the partition design include:
1. LOADING: There is a single wind load, pressure and suction, entered by the user during
building data entry that is the wind load for columns, girts, jambs, and panels. However, the
user can edit any of these loads on any of the walls.
2. COLUMNS: Available columns include C, D, R, W, O and U. You can set the column
size or let the program determine the size. You can set the rotation and base elevation of
each column. There is no weak axis column design. No axial load is considered in the
column design.
3. RAFTERS: The rafters can be short between the purlins, short below the purlins, or
continuous below the purlins. Rafter types include C, O, or U. There is no rafter design.
4. GIRTS: Flush or bypass girts are available, same choices as for the exterior walls. The
top girt can be of a different type. Top girts are located at the top of the wall panels. If the
front and back wall panels are not at the same elevation, two top girts will be used. Girt
flanges attached to wall panels are considered fully braced.
The partition wall design reports are the similar to the endwall design reports. There is a
separate report for each partition wall. If there are wall panels on both sides, there is a
separate panel report for each wall panel.

9-00-3 Detailing of Partition Walls

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT
DATE: September 16, 2000
NUMBER: 9-00-3
PROGRAM: All detailing programs
MANUAL: DETAILING
ENHANCEMENT: Detailing partition walls.
TO ACTIVATE: Set the desired detailing methods and detailing parameters.
DESCRIPTION: The MBS software will now do the complete design, detailing, and drawing of
partition walls. The previous program enhancement described the partition wall design. The
following program enhancement describes drawing of partition walls. This enhancement
describes how to detail partition walls.
A. CONNECTION HELP FOR PARTITION WALLS
The best over view of partition wall detailing is to view the connection help for partition walls.
This connection help is divided as follows.
CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL COLUMNS
CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL RAFTERS
CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL GIRTS
CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ADJACENT PARTITION WALLS
This program enhancement is divided into the above sections.
B. CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL COLUMNS
The partition wall connections for columns are listed in Table 1. The table format is typical for
connection help tables. The first two columns list what the columns are connected to. The next
column is any special conditions. This followed by data on the detailing method, drawing, and
drawings for detailing parameters. For ease of reference, the table is divided into sections as
listed on the left.
Partitions consist of flush girts and R, W, C, D, or tube columns. Tube columns are not a part
of the partition except where the partition includes a rigid frame interior column that is a tube
member. Connection between the flush girts and the partition wall columns are described in
section 1. It is possible for an adjacent partition to end at the location of a column in another
partition. Then there must be some options for connecting the girts of an adjacent wall to that
column. These options are provided in section 2 of the table. If you have an 'O' type column
adjacent to girts from an adjacent partition, you may want to attach the 'O' column to those
girts. This is addressed in section 3 of Table 1.
Options for the column to base plate connection are the same as for endwall columns. See
Table 1 section 4. The top of the column will attach to the underside of a rigid frame or to a
partition rafter. Table 1 section 5 and 6 address these connections. Section 6 refers to the table
for connections to the rafter.
2010 Metal Building Software, Inc

Program Enhancments for Partition Walls

21

C. CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL GIRTS

The major wall girt connections have been described in Table 1. Table 2 provides connection
information for two other types of girt connections. Section 2 describes how to connect girts of
one partition to the girts of an adjacent partition. When the partition is located under a rigid
frame, it is necessary to connect the partition wall girt to the inside flange of the rigid frame
sidewall column. These connection options are described in section 3 of Table 2.
D. CONNECTIONS TO PARTITION WALL RAFTERS
The top of the partition wall columns must be provided some type of structural support. For
transverse partition under the rigid frame, the columns are connected to the lower flange of the
rigid frame. For partition walls not under the rigid frame, the tops of the columns are attached
to a partition wall rafter which is attached to the roof purlins. Connections for the rafters are
referenced in Table 3. Section 1 of Table 3 references drawing PT1 which illustrates the
options and orientation for the rafter. Note the rafter can be in short sections between the
purlins (either in the plane of the purlin or below the purlin) or it can be a continuous member
below the purlins. The orientation of the rafter, direction of the open side, is also set by the
user.
For transverse partition walls the connections between the rafter and the column or door jamb
are referenced in Table 3 section 2. Note the column to rafter connections come from the
same list as endwall columns to endwall rafters connections.
The rafter for longitudinal partitions is a short piece either between two purlins or just below
two purlins. The rafter to column or door jamb connections are referenced in section 3 of
Table 3.
The connection between the rafter and the purlins is referenced in section 4 of Table 3.
E. CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ADJACENT PARTITION WALLS
With the option for multiple partition walls in a building, it is necessary to address the different
ways in which those partition walls will intersect. Table 4 references the resulting connections.
Drawings PT2 through PT5 provide plan views of the possible partition wall intersections. The
first column in the Table refers to the wall being processed in that the wall intersection is either
at the end of the wall, 'Ends' or at a point along the wall, 'Continues'. The second column
describes the location of the wall intersection for the adjacent wall.
A large number of detailing methods are available for these connections. The Table lists the
drawings that contain the detailing methods rather than list each of the detailing methods.

For the partition walls there are two new items: Contents Option and Display Option.
Contents Option can be set to 'F' for framing, 'S' for sheeting, and 'I' for insulation. Any
combination of these letters is also available: 'FS', 'FI', 'SI', 'FO', 'SO', and 'FSI', which will
combine the desired views onto the one drawing.
Display Option can be set to 'P' or 'F'. The 'P' denotes a partial view, or partition area only.
The 'F' denotes a full view, which includes the building outline. Both will contain the same
information, but 'F' is a smaller view to include the building outline.
These lines Partition Drawing Size Factors, Partition Drawing Options, and Partition Drawing
User Details transfer to the PartDwg*.IN files, where '*' is numbers 1 through 6.
The erection drawings for the partition walls are similar to the endwall and sidewall drawings.
There are up to four different views shown on the drawing: framing plan, up to two sheeting
plans, and the insulation plan. The framing plan labels the column, rafter, jambs, headers, girt,
angles, and loose clip locations. The framing plan includes the member table, angle table, and
clip table. The sheeting plans will layout the front/left, and/or the back/right sheeting plans. The
panel lengths and trim locations are labeled, and a trim table is included. The insulation plan will
be included when insulation is called for on the wall. The cut lengths are shown on the plan
and a table notes the insulation roll that the cut is from.
There is not a utility program included to add these new lines to your DWGCTRL.IN file.
However, a DWGCTRL.NEW is included to cut and paste to your default DWGCTRL.IN

9-00-6 Partition Wall Example: Transverse partition wall under

rigid frame
PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT
DATE: September 18, 2000
NUMBER: 9-00-6
PROGRAM: All
MANUAL: Design, Detailing, Drawing, and Data Files
ENHANCEMENT: Partition Wall Example: Transverse partition under rigid frame.
TO ACTIVATE: Currently active.
DESCRIPTION: This example illustrates the design, detailing, and drawing of a transverse partition
wall located under a rigid frame. It is similar to the endwall framing that can be located under
a rigid frame in the endwall. An added feature is that the interior rigid frame columns are
detailed to include the clips for the partition wall girts.
A. DESCRIPTION OF PARTITION WALL
This is partition wall 3 of the 6 partitions set up in the test building. The erection drawing for
the partition wall is shown on page 2. Note there are 6 framed openings, the columns are wide
flange members except for the interior rigid frame columns which are tube members.
B. DESIGN OF PARTITION WALL
The partition wall is design for a user set wind loading that is used on all of the wall
components. In this case the design wind load is 10 psf. Details of the design to be reported
include a wall girt, a wall column, and the interior rigid frame column subject to partition wall
wind load.
B1. WALL GIRT DESIGN
Consider girt G-59 it has a load width of 4'-8 1/2" and a span of 16'-8" minus the offset at each
end of the member giving a span of 15.75'. The wind load moment is: 4.707 * 10 * 15.75 / 8 =
1460 ft-lbs. The unbraced length of each girt flange is zero due to the wall panels on each
surface. The allowable moment of the smallest 8 inch C section is 5.75 ft-kips which is much
greater than the applied load of 1.46 ft-kips.
The deflection of the 8X25C16 girt is 5 * 4.707 * 10 * 15.754 * 1.728 / (384* 29000 * 7.791) =
0.058 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180 = 15.75 * 12 / 180 = 1.05 inch.
Hence, the 8X25C16 girt is selected.
B2. COLUMN DESIGN
Consider the first interior column from the left end of the wall. It labeled on the drawing as
PC-8. Load width for the column is 16'-8". The column length is 24'-2", plus the rise in the roof
of 16.6", minus the 8" purlin depth, minus the approx 8" rigid frame rafter depth, and minus clip
hole offset of 2" resulting in a column length of 23.95'. The moment in the column from the 10

2010 Metal Building Software, Inc

32

MBS Partition Walls Manual

psf wind load is 16.67 * 10 * 23.952 / 8 = 11.95 ft-kips. The allowable moment in a W8X10
that has an unbraced length of 7.33' is 17.7 ft-kips.
The column deflection is 5 * 16.7 * 10 * 23.954 1.728 / (384 * 29,000 * 30.8) = 1.38". This
compares to an allowable of 23.95 * 12 / 120 = 2.40". Hence the W8X10 column is used.
B3. RIGID FRAME INTERIOR COLUMN
The rigid frame interior column is pinned at each end and subject to an axial load to support the
rigid frame. In addition, due to this partition wall, the column is subjected to a moment from the
wind load. From the rigid frame design a 6" by 6" tube column with 3/16" wall thickness was
selected. Member area is 4.27 in^2, section modulus 7.93 in, and radius of gyration 2.36 in. It
has a maximum axial load of 24.2 kips and consider the moment from wind on the wall to be
the same as the above column of 11.95 ft- kips. The column axial stress is 24.2 / 4.27 = 5.67
ksi. The column bending stress is 11.95 * 12 / 7.93 = 18.1 ksi. The allowable bending stress
are 0.60 * 46 = 27.6 ksi and axial allowable with an unbraced length of 7.33' is 24.3 ksi. The
combined axial and bending check is:
5.67 / 24.3 + 18.1 / 27.6 = 0.23 + 0.66 = 0.89 < 1.33, therefore okay.
C. PARTITION WALL DETAILING
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. Only those parts which
are unique for this partition wall be presented. Those parts include: length of girt G-55, length
of column PC-8, and length of girt G-59. These items will illustrate calculating member length
of members that frame into the rigid frame rafter and column and also detailing the girt
connection to a tube column.
C1. LENGTH OF GIRT G-55.
This girt connects to the hot rolled column on the right and to the rigid frame sidewall column
on the left. Detailing methods and parameters are shown below.

Member parameters for the 8X25C16 are: a = 2.0", b = 4.0", c = 1.75"

Figure C1 illustrates the factors necessary to calculate the girt length.
Based on the drawing, the length of girt G-55 is:
= 16' 8" - (10. + 2 * 0.3125 - 11.5 + (12.5 -11.5) * 17 / 22.58 + 0.25 + 3.25) = 173.62"
= 14'-5 5/8", program length is the same.
C2. LENGTH OF COLUMN PC-8
The column connects to the underside of the rigid frame with a clip that is welded to the
column flange. The column to rafter connection is controlled by DM125 shown on drawing
EC4. The gap between the underside of the flange and the top of the column is set by
DT_BUILD(evv) which is set to 1.0".
Figure C2 illustrates the factors necessary to calculate the column length.

33

Based on the drawing, the length of column PC-2 is:

= 24'-2" + 16.6667" - (8 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 8 - (8 - 7) * 1.67 / 10) * 145 / 12 - 1.0
= 24.1064' = 24'- 1 1/4", program length is the same.
C3. LENGTH OF GIRT G-59.
Girt G-59 was selected since it frames into the rigid frame tube column. This connection is
detailed by DM360. Option 1 for a welded clip is used. DT_BUILD(fct) is the gap between
the surface of the tube column and the end of the girt. This is shown on parameter drawing
PP2 and is set to 0.25". The side dimension on the tube column is 6". The other end of the girt
is attached to the R column. As illustrated in section C1, the offset parameter is
DT_BUILD(faq) which has a value of 3.25".
Based on the above parameters, the length of girt G-59 is:
= 16'-8" - ( 3.25 + 0.25 + 3.0 ) = 16'-1 1/2" , program length is the same.
C4. RIGID FRAME DETAILING
Note the shop drawings for the rigid frame columns and rafters have welded clips to attach the
wall girts and the partition columns. The hole offsets match the parameters illustrated in the
above sections. A shop drawing of the rigid frame sidewall column is on drawing RF1-1A.
The shop drawing for the tube columns also have a welded clip. This is shown on drawing
RF1-7. Note their are clips on 4 sides of the columns since there are intersecting partitions at
those rigid frame columns.
C5. WALL PANEL DETAILING
Parameters for detailing the partition wall panels are shown on drawing PP8.
D. PARTITION WALL DRAWINGS
Partition wall drawings include the erection drawings for the framing and the sheeting plus the
shop drawings for the individual members. The erection drawing is shown on drawing
PARTDWG3. The unique shop drawings were illustrated in the above section on detailing.

9-00-7 Partition Wall Example: Transverse partition wall not at

rigid frame
PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT
DATE: September 21, 2000
NUMBER: 9-00-7
PROGRAM: ALL
MANUAL: Design, Detailing, Drawing, Data Files
ENHANCEMENT: Partition Wall Example: Transverse partition wall not at rigid frame.
TO ACTIVATE: Currently Active.
DESCRIPTION: This example illustrates the design, detailing, and drawing of transverse partition
walls not located at a rigid frame. This is similar to endwall design and detailing, except for the
rafter. A rafter is added between purlins, or to the underside of the purlin as specified by the
rafter option. The top of column attaches to the added rafter. The rafter option and orientation
are specified by the user in the DESCTRL.IN file, see PE 9-00-1.
A. DESCRIPTION OF PARTITION WALL
This is partition wall 4 of the 6 partitions setup in the test building. The erection drawing for the
partition is shown on page 2. Note there is one framed opening, the columns are wide flange
members except for the 'O' type columns at the ends. The rafter option 3 and orientation 'D'
are used.
B. DESIGN OF PARTITION WALL
The partition wall is designed for a user set wind loading that is used on all the wall
components. In this case the design wind load is 10 psf. Details of the design that are reported
are a wall girt, a corner column, and an interior column.
B1. WALL GIRT DESIGN
Consider girt G-62, which has a load width of 6'-0". The girt span is the bay width minus the
offset at each end, which gives a span of (20'-0") - (2 * 3 1/2") = 19'-5". The wind load is
wL/8 = (6.00 * 10.0) * (19.4167) / 8 = 2828 ft-lbs. The unbraced length of the inside girt
flange is the full length by default, due to panels on one side only. The allowable moment of
the smallest 8" Z section is 3.04 ft-kips which results in a unity check value of 0.93.
The deflection of the 8X25Z16 girt is 5 * (6.0 * 10) * (19.4167)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
7.759) = 0.85 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180, which is (19.4167 * 12) / 180
= 1.29 inch. Hence, the 8X25Z16 is selected.
B2. CORNER COLUMN DESIGN
Consider the left partition corner column. It is labeled PC-11 on the drawing. Load width for
the column is 20'-0" / 2 = 10'-0". The column length is 24'-2" plus the rise in the roof of 0.666"
minus the 8" purlin depth resulting in a column length of 23.556'. The column is assumed
supported by the sidewall girts, therefore the calculated moment is based on the girt span
2010 Metal Building Software, Inc

Program Enhancments for Partition Walls

39

rather than the column length. The moment maximum resulting from the 10 psf wind load is
(10 * 10) * (7.333) / 8 = 0.67 ft-kips. The allowable moment for the 8X2CH16 that has an
unbraced length of 7.33' is 1.90 ft-kips.
The deflection of the 8X2CH16 column is 5 * (10 * 10) * (7.333)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
6.373) = 0.04 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180, which is (7.333 * 12) / 180 =
0.48 inch. Hence, the 8X2CH16 is selected.
B3. INTERIOR COLUMN DESIGN
Consider the first interior column from the left end of the wall. It is labeled PC-12 on the
drawing. Load width for the column is 20'-0". The column length is 24'-2" plus the rise in the
roof of 1.666' minus the 8" purlin depth resulting in a column length of 25.166'. The calculated
moment from the 10 psf wind load is (10 * 20) * (25.166) / 8 = 15.83 ft-kips. The allowable
moment for the W8X10 that has an unbraced length of 7.33' is 17.7 ft-kips.
The deflection of the W8X10 column is 5 * (10 * 20) * (25.166)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
30.8) = 2.02 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180, which is (25.1666 * 12) / 180
= 1.68 inch. Hence, the W8X10 did not work due to deflection considerations. The next 8"
deep column, W8X13, gives a deflection of 5 * (10 * 20) * (25.166)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
30.8) = 1.57 inch. Hence the W8X13 column is selected.
C. PARTITION WALL DETAILING
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. Only those parts which
are unique for this partition wall will be presented. These include: length of girt G-62, length of
corner column PC-11, length of interior column PC-12, partition rafter layout & length for
rafter option 3 with 'D' orientation.
C1. LENGTH OF GIRT G-1
The girt connects to hot-rolled partition column on the right and the 'O' partition column on the
left. Detailing methods and parameters are shown below.

Based on the figure, the girt length is: (20'- 0") - (10" + 0.50") - (4.50") = 18'- 9" (225"),
program length is the same.
C2. LENGTH OF CORNER COLUMN PC-11
The top of column connects to the partition rafter. The column to rafter connection is

Figure C2 illustrates the factors necessary to calculate the column length.

Based on the figure, the length of column PC-11 is: (24'- 2") + (1/12) * (10") - (8") / COS (0.25") - (0.25") = 23'- 6 5/16" (282.306"), program length is the same.
C3. LENGTH OF INTERIOR COLUMN PC-12
The top of column connects to the partition rafter. The column to rafter connection is
controlled by DM354 as shown on drawing PT10. The gap between the top of column and
lowest height of the rafter web across the column flange is set by DT_BUILD(leg) which has
a value of 0.25 inch. The bottom of column connection is a welded base plate as this is the
only available option for W and R columns as shown on drawing EC3.
Figure C3 illustrates the factors necessary to calculate the column length.
Based on the figure, the length of column PC-12 is: (24'- 2") + (1/12) * (19'-10") - (8") / COS (0.25") = 25'- 1 9/16" (301.556"), program length is the same.
C4. PARTITION RAFTER LAYOUT AND LENGTH FOR RAFTER OPTION 3 WITH 'D'
ORIENTATION
The rafter offset is the horizontal offset distance to the start of the rafter. The first rafter will
always have an offset of 0.00, because all offsets are measured from the beginning of the
partition. The number of pieces is determined by the maximum piece length allowed and the
surface intersections. The offset in PARTDET.IN is an approximate distance, and required
adjustments due to end conditions are made in the PARTDET.OUT file. The maximum rafter
length is set by DT_BUILD(leh) which has a value of 240.0 inch. The layout is from the peak
down with the full length pieces at the peak. Figure C4.1 shows the preliminary layout used in
the PARTDET.IN file.

MANUAL: Design, Detailing, Drawing, and Data Files
ENHANCEMENT: Partition Wall Example: Longitudinal partition with rigid frame columns.
TO ACTIVATE: Currently active.
DESCRIPTION: This example illustrates the design, detailing, and drawing of a longitudinal partition
wall located such that it includes interior columns of rigid frames. The interior rigid frame
columns are detailed to include the clips for the partition wall girts.
A. DESCRIPTION OF PARTITION WALL
This is partition wall 1 of the 6 partitions set up in the test building and illustrated in PE 9-00-9.
The erection drawing for the partition wall is included in this enhancement. Note there is one
framed opening that is an open bay. One influence of the open bay is to have two separate
partitions, one on each side of the open bay, that can be entered as a single partition. The two
interior columns are tube members which are interior columns for the rigid frames.
B. ENTERING PARTITION WALL DATA
A plan view of the partition wall is in the 'Help files' part of this manual. The input data for the
partition walls is also in that section. Please take out the plan view drawing of the wall and the
pages containing the partition wall input data. The following comments describe some of the
input items for the wall.

LINE: PARTITION WALL GIRT LOCATION
a) Data entry is similar to building wall girt location.
b) Since the wall panels go to 18', you may want to set a girt at that level.
LINE: PARTITION WALL PANELS, LEFT/FRONT SIDE OF WALL
a) On the front side of this wall there will be a panel that extends to 18'. If a 0.0 height is
entered then the letter designation B or T is used indicating that the panels extent to
the bottom or top of the purlins.
b) The panel part name comes from the DS_PANEL file.
c) The panel color and trim color are represented by a four letter code. The first two
letters are for the color and the second two letters are for the trim style.
LINE: PARTITION WALL PANELS, RIGHT/BACK SIDE OF WALL
a) The wall panel on the back side of the wall continues to the bottom side of the purlins
as indicated by the 0.0 height and the 'B' letter.
LINE: PARTITION WALL ACCESSORIES
a) Insulation will not be used on this wall.
b) The base options used include base channel and base seal.

LINE: COLUMN INFO. FOR INTERSECTION OF TWO CONTINUOUS PARTITIONS

a) Note from the plan view of the partitions that wall 1 intersects with wall 3. Walls 1
and 3 need to be entered as wall id.
b) The column type for each wall is '-' since the common column is a rigid frame column.
c) The column options are shown on drawing PT20. The '-' option is used since no
partition wall columns are used, the only column used is the rigid frame column.
C. DESIGN OF PARTITION WALL
There is nothing new in this design compared to what is reported in PE 9-00-5. Hence, no
design calculations will be provided.
D. PARTITION WALL DETAILING
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. Only those parts which
are unique for this partition wall be presented. Those parts include lengths and hole locations
for: girts, jambs, columns, and rafters.
D1. GIRT G-2: FROM END COLUMN TO RIGID FRAME COLUMN TO DOOR JAMB
Calculation are shown on Figure D1. Figure D1 includes the reference to the required detailing
methods and detailing parameters. Length calculations are also given.
D2. INTERIOR COLUMN TO RAFTER CONNECTION
This connection is illustrated in Figure D2. The option '1' rafter with a 'R' orientation is used.
Bolted clips connect the rafter to the roof purlins. A four bolt pattern connects the top of the
column to the rafter. The Figure lists the detailing methods, detailing parameters, and reports
the equations for length calculations.
Figure D2A details the location of the holes in the rafter. The rafter to purlin clip is also
detailed on this drawing.
D3. END COLUMN TO RAFTER CONNECTION
This connection is the same as the for the interior column to rafter in section D2
D5. WALL PANEL DETAILING
Parameters for detailing the partition wall panels are shown on drawing PP8. Figure D5
illustrates the calculation of the length of the panels on the front and back of the wall. Recall
that the front panel stops at the 18' girt while the back panel stops at the underside of the roof
purlins.
E. PARTITION WALL DRAWINGS
Partition wall drawings include the erection drawings for the framing and the sheeting plus the
shop drawings for the individual members. The erection drawing is included. Note there are
three items shown on the drawing: framing plan, front side panels, and back side panels. The
unique shop drawings were illustrated in the above section on detailing.

9-00-9 Partition Wall Example: Building with six partitions

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT
DATE: September 26, 2000
NUMBER: 9-00-9
PROGRAM: ALL
MANUAL: Detailing
ENHANCEMENT: Partition Wall Detailing Example: Building with six partition walls.
TO ACTIVATE: Currently active.
DESCRIPTION: This example illustrates the detailing of columns, rafters, girts, clips, sheeting, trim,
and fasteners for partition walls. This covers items not covered in other enhancements. The
intent of this enhancement is to show HOW TO CALCULATE lengths, hole locations, and
quantities for the various members in partition walls.
Each partition is detailed separately and includes all columns, rafters, door jambs, headers,
girts, panels, loose clips, sheeting angle, trim, and fasteners that are unique to this wall. Each
item that has already been shown how to calculate will not be repeated.
Formulas for calculating member lengths are shown on each shop drawing. For columns not
occurring at a rigid frame, the roof height must be calculated. For partition columns that occur
at a rigid frame but not rigid frame interior columns, the height to the underside of rigid frame
must be calculated. When underside of rigid frame height is required the MPARTDET
program will calculate this value. Door jambs that extend full height have lengths calculated
similar to columns. All other members involve spacing between members. After the roof
height, frame height, or spacing between members are calculated then end deducts are applied
to arrive at the member length.
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. All directions noted in
this enhancement are as viewed from the outside of building standing at either the left endwall
or the front sidewall. The left side of transverse and front side of longitudinal walls are
specified on the same line.
A. OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF PARTITION WALLS KEYDWG_6
There are 6 partition walls included in this example. Partition 1 and 2 are longitudinal with
sheeting full height on one side of the wall. Partition 3 is a transverse partition the full building
width that is centered on the rigid frame above. Partitions 4 and 5 are transverse partitions the
full building width that extend to the underside of the purlins. Partition 6 is a partial width
partition that extends to the underside of purlins. The plan view of this partition example is
shown on KEYDWG_6. Partition wall 1 will be fully detailed, then only the portions of the
other partitions that require a different calculation will be included.
B. PARTITION WALL 1 PART1_FS

wall 1.
B9. BOLTS AND SCREWS
The bolts and screws are separately calculated on two different drawings. The framing view,
PART1_FO, is shown for each calculation. The fastener.out file can be used for checking,
since each partition wall is shown separately for bolt and screw quantities.
C. PARTITION WALL 2 PART2_FS
Partition 2 is a longitudinal partition that includes rigid frame interior columns as partition
columns. The top of column are connected to an added rafter, with rafter option 2 and rotation
'R' for open side to the right. There is a 20'-0" high partial wall in the fourth bay. Girt heights
are 7'-4", 12'-0", and 17'-0". The program will add top girts for panels that do not extend to the
roof line. The panel height is entered as 0'-0" to represent full height with 'B' top of purlin for
left side panels extending to the bottom of purlin. The panel height specified is 18'-0" for the
right side. Colors for panels and trim are 'P2' for the left and 'P8' for the right. This partition
starts at the left endwall, intersects partition 3 at a rigid frame column, intersects partition 6
and 4, and ends at partition 5.

MBS Partition Walls Manual

Help File for DesCtrl.In File

DESCTRL.HLP (PARTITION WALL SPECIFIC)
(53) PARTITION WALL LOADS & DEFLECTION LIMTS:
Enter the basic loads to be applied to the partition wall design program: PartDes.exe.
WIND PRESSURE, (psf, kN/m):
The design wind pressure for partitions. This is usually the minimum design pressure
for portions of the buildings as specified in the building code.
DEFLECTION - COLUMN, GIRT, PANEL (L/x):
Member deflection limits are reported in terms of the span divided by a constant (x).
Enter the constant to be used for each member and loading.
(54) PARTITION WALL LOCATION:
SET OF PARTITION WALLS:
The quantity of partition walls to be defined. A maximum of 6 unique partition walls
are available.
PARTITION Id:
The number for the partition wall, that is the label for the partition wall.
ORIENTATION (L/T):
The direction for the partition wall. Use:
'L' for partition walls that are the longitudinal direction, which is the building length
direction.
'T' for partition walls that are the transverse direction, which is the building width
direction.
'N' for partition walls that are not active. This option allows for predefining
partition wall information.
WALL DIRECTION:
The wall location offset specifies the distance to the reference point of the partition
wall. The wall direction is 2 characters. The first character specifies to which side of
the reference point the wall framing occurs and the second character specifies which
side of the wall is the outside of wall. Outside of wall is important for bypass girts and
for determining the girt direction for flush girts.
'LR' - the wall framing to the left of location offset, and the right side is the outside
of wall.
'RL' - the wall framing to the right of location offset, and the left side is the outside
of wall.
'CR' - the wall framing centered on the location offset, and the right side is the
outside of wall.
'CL' - the wall framing centered on the location offset, and the left side is the
outside of wall.
START/END WALL OFFSET, (ft, mm):
2010 Metal Building Software, Inc

83

Distance from the building wall to the start or end of the partition wall. The difference
between the start offset and the end offset is the length of the partition wall.
'L' = orient walls, this is the distance from the left endwall.
'T' = orient walls, this is the distance from the back sidewall.
START/END ADJACENT WALL Id:
The partition wall Id for the wall occurring at the start/end of the partition. Enter 0 for
an exterior building wall occurring at the start/end, and for the absence of an adjacent
partition wall.
START/END TIE IN OPTION:
The tie-in option for the adjacent wall Id. Refer to drawing PT20 for available options.
'-' = No column is present and tie-in option is not used.
'0' or '1' = Column is not attached to other wall and location is not adjusted.
'2' = Column is not attached to other wall and location is adjusted.
'3' = Column is attached to other wall and location is not adjusted.
'4' = Column is attached to other wall and location is adjusted.
LOCATION QUANTITY:
The number of times this partition wall occurs.
LOCATION OFFSET, (ft, mm):
The distance to the reference point of the partition wall. Distances are measured left
to right as viewed from outside the building.
'L' = orient walls the distance is measured from the left corner of the Left
Endwall.
'T' = orient walls the distance is measured from the left corner of the Front
Sidewall.
(55) PARTITION WALL BAY SPACING:
PARTITION ID:
The number for the partition wall, which is the label for the partition wall.
SETS OF BAYS:
The number of sets of data necessary to describe the column spacing along the
partition wall. A set of data consists of a bay width and number of bays.
BAY WIDTH, (ft, mm):
Bay width. Start with the bay at the start offset.
NUMBER OF BAYS:
Number of consecutive occurrences of that bay width. Repeat this and the last item
as required to fully describe the bay spacing in the wall.
(56) PARTITION WALL FRAMED AND BAY OPENINGS:
PARTITION ID:
The number for the partition wall, that is the label for the partition wall.

2010 Metal Building Software, Inc

84

MBS Partition Walls Manual

NO. OF OPENINGS:
Number of framed openings on that wall (0 to 20). No more than two framed
openings are permitted in each bay.
BAY ID:
Number of the bay that contains the framed opening. Bay 1 is at the start offset of
the wall.
OPEN WIDTH, (ft, mm):
Width of the framed opening.
OPEN HEIGHT, (ft, mm):
Height of the opening.
OPEN OFFSET, (ft, mm):
Distance from the left side of the bay to the nearest side of the framed opening.
OPENING TYPE:
The first letter of this two letter code is the door type and the second letter is the
framed opening type. If the first digit is blank then the door type is not considered.

RAFTER ORIENT:
There are 3 directions available for the rafter. These are shown on reference
drawing PT1. Orientation is used to specify the open face direction of the C or O
section.
'L' is for left orientation, which is open toward the left endwall.
'R' is for right orientation, which is open toward the right endwall. Both 'L' and 'R'
are oriented with the rafter web vertical.
'D' for the downward direction for the open face of the C or O section, and the
web is horizontal.
RAFTER OPTION:
There are 3 rafter options available. These are shown on reference drawing PT1.
1 is for rafters at top of columns only, and the rafters are between the adjacent
purlins at the top of the column.
2 is for rafters at top of columns only, and the rafters are to the underside of the
adjacent purlins at the top of columns.
3 is for a continuous rafter the full length of the partition. The rafter attaches to
the underside of all purlins.

This feature is currently not available.
SET DEPTH, (in, mm):
If the girt depth is to be set by the user, set the desired depth, else set to zero.
TOP GIRT:
This is only used when either partition panel is not full height and this allows setting the
girt type for the girt at the top of the panel. This specification can be different from the
other girts, except that an outset top girt is not available with a flush girt since their
location in respect to the column is different.
Use 'ZB', 'ZF', 'ZO', 'CB', 'CF', 'CO', or 'CL' where the first character represents the
member type and the second character represents the mount or lap.
C = single C-section,
Z = Z section,

'P' (partial) for the user to set some girts and the program to locate the other
girts.
NUMBER OF GIRTS:
Number of girts on that wall. If zero is used, the program will calculate the standard
wall girt spacing.
GIRT LOCATION, (ft, mm):
Distance from the floor line to the girt, one value for each girt.
(61) PARTITION WALL LEFT/FRONT SIDE OF WALL DATA:
PARTITION ID:
The number for the partition wall, that is the label for the partition wall.
WALL HEIGHT, (ft, mm):
Vertical distance from the floor line to the top of the partition panel. For full height
panels to extend to roof line, enter 0.00 and respond to the remaining questions in this
section.
TOP OF PANEL:
'T' if the panels extend to the top of the roof purlins, use 'B' if the roof panels are to
extend to the bottom of the roof purlins. This affects panel length for both the
longitudinal and transverse partition walls.
PANEL PART NAME:
The panel part name as designated in the DS_PANEL.SIZ file.
PANEL COLOR:
The first two letters of this four letter code represents the color of the panel. The
second two letters represents the style for the panel (not used).
