Describe the two forms (polar form and j-form) of representing a complex number.
Draw the complex number 1.414+j1.414 on appropriate coordinate systems.
(4)
Solution:
Polar form uses a vector in polar coordinating system to present a complex number. The
magnitude of the vector is the norm of the complex number. The angle is the atan
of the ratio between the imaginary part to the real part.
j-form uses a pair of Cartesian coordinates to present the real part and imaginary part.

Use the two forms(polar form and j-form) of representing a complex number, do
the following calculations:
(1+j 2) (3 j 4) ;
(1+j 2) (3 j 4) .

(2) (1+j2)*(3+j4) = (1+j2)*(3-j4)/(3^2+4^2) = (1*3+2*4 + j(-4*1+2*3)) = 11/25 +
j2/25 = 0.44+j0.08
QUESTION 2
2.1
Derive from first principles, the gain or loss of a network in dB and in Neper.
(4)
Solution:
Gain or loss of a network = 10log(Pout/Pin) dB = 1/2ln(Pout/Pin) neper
2.2
If a network has an input of 200uW and output is 2W. Calculate the gain or loss of
the network in dB and Neper.
(4)
[8]
Solution:
Gain or loss = 10log(2/0.0002) = 40dB
= 1/2ln(2/0.0002) = 4.605neper
QUESTION 3
For an amplifier, if the input power (Pin) is 0.1 mW and the output power (Pout) is 10 mW,
calculate:
3.1
The signal strength of Pin and Pout in dBm;
(8)
3.2
The gain of the amplifier.
(4)
[12]
Solution:
3.1
Signal strength of Pin = 10log(Pin/1mW) = 10log(0.1mW/1mW) = -10dBm
Signal strength of Pout = 10log(Pout/1mW) = 10log(10mW/1mW) = 10dBm
3.2
The gain of the amplifier = Pout (in dBm)- Pin(in dBm) = 20dB
QUESTION 4
4.1
Derive from first principles, the two forms (in ratio and in dB) of signal to noise
ratio.
(4)
4.2
Suppose the signal power and the noise power are 10pW and 1mW respectively,
calculate the signal to noise ratio in the two forms in question 4.1. (note: you
might need to convert the powers to dBm, when you calculate the SNR in dB)
(6)
[10]
Solution:
4.1 SNR(ratio)
SNR(dB) =
4.2 SNR(ratio)
SNR(dB) =
= Ps/Pn
Ps(dBm) Pn(dBm) = 10log(Ps/Pn)
= Ps/Pn = 10pW/1mW = 10*10^(-12)/(1*10^(-3) = 1*10^(-8)
Ps(dBm) Pn(dBm) = -80 0 = -80
