Shooting an Elephant - Summary by Paragraphs

P1: Hes hated, unhappy, aware. Starts with I was hated by large numbers of
people the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to
happen to me, tells the reader how each kind of people disliked him.
P2 : All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served
and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job
impossible Hates both the British Empire and the Burmese people. Feelings like
these are the normal by-products of imperialism
P3: It was a tiny incident in itself, but it gave me a better glimpse than I had had
before of the real nature of imperialism. He tells that he was informed of the
escape of the elephant.
P4: The setting is told. I remember that it was a cloudy, stuffy morning at the
beginning of the rains. The elephant kills an Indian, and the Indians corpse
implies a painful death . Orwell sends his man to get him an elephant rifle
P5: He gets the rifle, without any intention of killing it goes to the elephant a
snowballing crowd follows.
P6: He observes the not-anymore-must elephant, and concludes that he
shouldnt shoot him as it is no more dangerous than a cow.
P7: He feels the pressure. He acknowledges that the white mans dominion on
East is hollow and futile. Here was I, the white man with his gun, standing in
front of the unarmed native crowd seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but
in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those
yellow faces behind
P8: He again thinks that it would be murder to kill it as the animal wasnt
threatening or anything. Moreover (Somehow it always seems worse to kill a
large animal.). if anything went wrong... and if that happened it was quite
probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do.
P9: He prepares to shoot.
P10: He shoots the elephant, thrice. Orwell depicts the agony of the animal.
P11: He aims his last two bullets(?) at its heart, some blood comes out but the
elephant simply can not die (neither can it live). He gets his smaller rifle, shoots
the elephant time and time again, but can not fasten its painful death
whatsoever.
P12: He goes away as he cant stand the situation. Later he learns that the
animals dying took one and a half hour.
P13: Endless discussions about whether he acted right. I often wondered
whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a
fool.
