Task 3: Reflection

On 30 March 2015, my friends and I had done our stage performance for Language
Arts subject for this semester which is Play and Drama for Young Learners (LGA 3043E).
Firstly, I would like to express my humble gratitude to my LGA 3043E lecturers, Madam
Roslin Noor Ong and Madam Suguna P. Rajagopal for their guidance throughout this
coursework and also to my classmates for their supports. My play entitles The Twisted Tale
and this play is suitable for the young learner of good proficiency level pupils of standard 4.
The usage of words is really catchy and easy to understand, thus it suit with their proficiency
level. This play was created by my group and me, in order to generate new ideas, creativity
and inculcate good moral values to the pupils. Moreover, the characters in this story are quite
famous among young learners and it can attract their attention easily. For examples, the
character of Elsa from Frozen, Captain Jack Sparrow character, Captain Hook character,
Gandalf the Grey character, and Puteri Gunung Ledang character. Lynch- Brown & Tomlison
(2008) mentioned that plays helps children come to terms with the unknown and the
threatening and help to heighten their appreciation of the actual and the enjoyment of the
human comedy.
This play is basically about Elsa, Puteri Gunung Ledangs daughter who always
being bullied by Gandalf the Greys sons which are Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow.
One day, Captain Hook tripped himself and fainted, Elsa helps him by using chants a healing
spell from the Book of Spells her father gave her before he passed away.

Despite the

kindness and humbleness of Elsa, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow apologised and
the three of them become friends and it leads to the pathway of love story of Puteri Gunung
Ledang and Gandalf the Grey. There are many moral values that can be teach to the pupils
from this play are honesty is the best policy, bully is not a good thing, and be kind, humble,
polite and respect to other people. In line with the moral values, pupils will acknowledge that
certain behaviours are not good and they will change it to the better one. Before we perform
our play, we had to undergo a few preliminary processes such as process of adapting, and
performing. It is compulsory for us to be fully prepared before performing our play. Full
cooperation from all of my teammates is the strength and the main core for this staging of the
play to be succeeded. The script was checked by the lecturers and the props, background
settings and costumes were prepared before the staging day. We refer to the standard
document and syllabus when creating and adapting the script and storyline.

The strengths that I can conclude based on the feedback given by my lecturers are
the content of this play is highly suitable for the age of the learners. This is because the
words use in this story is really catchy, simple, and easy to understand, so it will help the
audience to understand the meaning of the words. Moreover, I showed good facial
expression, gestures and voice intonation in the play. For instances, I used a sad tone to
show Elsa is feeling sad and I follow the tone according to the situation. By using different
voice intonations to convey emotion, it can attract audiences attention. The costumes I used
are symbolizing character of Princess Elsa in Frozen and I used light blue colour dress and
a crown to show the costume of Elsa. The feedback from my lecturers and friends said that
my costume worn was attractive and suit the character. By wearing a costume, it will
highlight certain characters in the story. Furthermore, for my character, I had to sing some
lyric of the song in the Frozen such as let it go, let it go, cant hold it back anymore is when
Elsa is being bullied and feeling sad, and the cold never bother me anyway is when Puteri
Gunung Ledang gave a scarf and make Elsa wear it.
The weaknesses that I can conclude from the feedback of my peers and lecturers are
Firstly, sometimes I used to misspell the pronunciation of words. This might be because of
the nervousness and I feel really disappointed because I cannot manage to control the
feeling of nervousness at certain point. This can be seen when I forgot that I should sing let it
go for the second time during the Elsas second bullied situation. As a future English teacher,
I should be more confident and try to control my nervousness in me. Therefore, I will do a lot
of practices in front of some of my friends and maybe in front of the mirror to enhance my
confident level. Furthermore, it is important to me to enhance my weakness such as some
errors in pronunciation. Although the errors made by me were not much but I should practice
more for some difficult words in order to make the spelling error free in that play. I will try to
improve my pronunciation, enunciation and intonation in order to make sure the audience
understand the play.
The personal growth in me that can be seen in throughout the process of selecting,
adapting and staging a play is I feel more responsible in working with group members. We do
our work equally and cooperate together. I am working on the costumes and make up,
however I still help in the scripting and props making. Next, the personal growth in me also
includes my self-confidence. I think my level of confidence is rising up because before this I
feel really unconfident when speaking in front of the people. Hence, it was true that the
purposes of the play or role play is to practice and use English in a more meaningful way as
a practical language, helps in improving communication skills, creativity, increased social
awareness, independent thinking, verbalization of opinions, development of values,
appreciation of drama, and develop fluency in language.

Based on the drama performance, I found that there are many aspects that related in
improvement of my professional growth. As a future teacher, I learned on how to respect
peoples opinions and listen to people when they are speaking. This is important because I
must respect or listen to my pupils when they are speaking to me or giving their opinions.
Moreover, this can help in building good rapport with the pupils. Next, I can acknowledge on
how to choose the suitable play and drama to be teach to pupils according to their level. it is
important for me as a future English teacher to understand my pupils needs and level of
proficiency.
In conclusion, there are many room for improvement for my personal growth, and my
professional growth, so as a future English teacher, I should do a lot of practice and reading
in order to achieve the goals of teaching in the primary ESL classroom. The strengths and
weaknesses received should be guidance to a future teacher like me to enhance my
profession in future.
