By ZANE CLARK

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

Its curtains for Voorhees, Concept to Curtain that is, when the
Fusion Performing Arts Center
and After Shock Entertainment
hold the third annual Concept to
Curtain 24-hour play festival on
April 25-26.
Concept to Curtain is for participants of all ages and theater
backgrounds, even those with no
experience, to conceptualize,
write and rehearse their own oneact theater piece in the span of 24
hours and then perform that
piece for an audience.
Ryk Lewis, director of the Fusion Performing Arts Center, describes the event as a way to
bring performers from all ranges
of talents together for a crash
course in theater.
If you ever wanted to be a part
of a theatrical production for a
theater piece, this is a phenomenal chance to jump in with both
feet and see how theater is made,
Lewis said.

Viking Collin Fabio takes a look at a pitch as Eastern High School took on Seneca High School last week. The Vikings defeated the
Golden Eagles, 12-1. For more photos from the game, please see page 13.

SPEAK hosts Abilities Awareness Week

Week of activities April 1926 includes 5K fundraiser on April 25
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Special needs Parents, Educators And Kids of Voorhees
(SPEAK) is inviting the commu-

nity to participate in what the

group calls a a week-long celebration of abilities, as it once
again brings Abilities Awareness
Week to Voorhees Township from
April 19-26.

Throughout the week, SPEAK

will be promoting activities and
programs throughout the area, as
well as local schools, that help bolster the acceptance and understanding of those with disabilities and spotlight the everyday
challenges those who are disabled
face.
To kick-off Abilities Awareness Week, SPEAK, in conjunction with the Eastern Regional
High School Success Club, will be
hosting a free bingo event for
everyone in the community older
than an eighth-grade level on
April 17 at the Eastern cafeteria.
SPEAK President Elena Luzi
said the event is a way to bring together children with varying levels of ability who will soon be
transitioning out of the Voorhees
School District and into Eastern
Regional High School.
We feel like were doing it not
just to promote awareness, but acceptance, Luzi said.
The event will take place from
6:30-8:30 p.m. and those interested
can RSVP to bingo@speaksj.org.
Then, as Abilities Awareness
Week gets underway, schools in
the district will see special programing related to those with disabilities.
A poster contest will be held
through district schools, with this
years theme being learning
through differences.
Luzi said the poster contests
were always a good way to discover how typical children in the district may view their atypical
peers.
In addition to the contest, some
students at Voorhees Middle
School will participate in exhibitions from Voorhees Pediatric
that showcase what it can be like
to be disabled and the challenges
that can arise.
An Apple distinguished educator will also be on hand for presentations related to how atypical
individuals can use technology.
As in years past, Abilities
Awareness Week will culminate
with SPEAKs annual All Abilities 5K Run and One Mile
Run/Walk/Wheel at Eastern on

Christies tax cap is working

But now its time to move to the next phase reducing property taxes

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Dan McDonough Jr.
chairman of elauwit media

ive years ago, back in 2010, Gov.

Christie won a political battle,
enacting a 2 percent cap on municipal tax levies. The law limited
property-taxing budget increases to a
maximum of 2 percent with some exceptions down from 4 percent, lest
they be subject to public vote.
While some argued at the time
whether the cap would work, or
whether it was another political ploy,
the data says it has had a positive effect.
Since the cap was enacted, property
taxes rose 2.4 percent on average in
2011, 1.6 percent in 2012, 1.3 percent in
2013 and 2.2 percent in 2014. From 2004
to 2006, property taxes increased at
least 7 percent each year.
Thats data we can stand behind, but
now, five years after the caps enaction,
more needs to be done. Its not simply
good enough that property tax increases have leveled off; we need to find a

working? Or is it all just political smokeand-mirrors? Let your voice be heard
through a letter to the editor.

way to reduce the property tax burden

on our residents.
While the increase last year was
only 2.2 percent, New Jerseys average
property tax bill rose to the highest its
ever been to $8,161 on average, according to Department of Community
Affairs data. The average property taxpayer paid an additional $173 in property taxes last year, up from an average
total of $7,988 in 2013.
Heres some more ugly data...
Only 0.2 percent of homeowners in
the U.S. paid more than $8,000 last year
in property taxes which is lower
than our state average.
New Jersey collects $3,000 per capi-

ta in property taxes. Seventy-nine percent of American homeowners paid

less than $1,750 last year, and only 3
percent paid more than $4,000.
Christies property-tax cap was
never going to fix the problem of New
Jerseys high property taxes; it wasnt
designed to do so. It has helped keep
local taxing entities in check, but thats
only a start.
Step 2 of property tax reform should
be initiatives to lower property taxes.
Some of these are in place, such as incentives to bring new business to the
states barren wastelands such as
Trenton and Camden.
But that is not enough. We need to
bring more business and more jobs to
this state, more ratables for our towns
and school districts to offset the taxes
these entities need to operate. Taxes
arent going up too much, and thats
good, but now they need to start going
down.

14 THE VOORHEES SUN APRIL 1521, 2015

Work is collaborative effort with community

WORK
Continued from page 1
Lewis describes Concept to
Curtain as interesting on two levels, the first for those with theater
experience and the second for
those without.
Its great for people who dont
have a lot of theater experience to
get immersed in the process

quickly because they get to see little bits of all of these elements
that go into a productionits
challenging to people who are familiar with theater because they
sort of get to stretch themselves
and do something very quickly
that normally takes months or
weeks to put together, Lewis
said.
When all is said and done, and
the groups perform their finished
work for a live audience, Lewis

said that audience will be in for

something put together lightening quick but still resulting in a
creative and interesting piece.
People are amazed more than
anything else, Lewis said. People are amazed at the quality of
the material that can be created
in such a short period of time.
They feed off of the fun that the
performers had putting together,
and the idea that the components
didnt exist 24 hours before they
came to see the show is enjoyable
for them.
For those with limited or no
theater experience, Lewis said
the work is a collaborative effort,

so even those new to the art form

will still definitely have a place in
what is overall a collaborative effort.
Even if you have some people
who arent used to doing theater,
their ideas still come out and still
get talked about and incorporated
in some way, Lewis said.
Experts and amateurs alike interested in participating in the
Concept to Curtain event need no
more than to come to the Fusion
Performing Arts Center on
April 25 at 2:30 p.m. to register for
$10.
Those under 18 will need to
bring a parent with them to sign a

permission form, although the

event will have adult supervision
at all times.
The $10 fee gets performers one
pizza meal, but they are invited
and encouraged to bring additional meals or snacks for themselves
to last the 24 hours.
Those interested in seeing the
finished pieces need only to show
up to the Fusion Performing Arts
Center at 3 p.m. on April 26 with
$10 for a seat.
When you have these people
who arent used to working together, everybody sort of brings
something different to the table,
Lewis said.

The All Abilities 5K, both for
dedicated and casual runners,

while also helping raise money
for SPEAKs general mission.
Online registration for the All

The 5K Run and One Mile

$15 race fee, and $2.50 sign-up fee

Its a time where we can all

come together for an event, Luzi

said. Its really just intended to
be a fun, lighthearted, everyone
come together event.
Outside of Abilities Awareness
Week, SPEAK works through the
year to integrate the community
through initiatives such as afterschool sports programs, educational presentations, helping fund
technology projects for school resource rooms, helping fund
teacher and administrator education and training programs, holding family bowling events and
hosting the annual SPEAK Arts
creative arts, music and drama
program.
Most recently, the Voorhees
Township Board of Education
used its March meeting to honor
Voorhees Middle School students
Morgan Tiernan and Taylor Ruiz
for a video project they created
about SPEAK, and at the February BOE meeting, SPEAK donated a check to the district for an
Apple TV and LCD TV to be used
in a resource classroom at VMS.

Men arrested in assault

MEN
Continued from page 4
allegedly used the victim's credit
card at the Ashland PATCO station to purchase PATCO Freedom
cards approximately 15
minutes after the robbery.
The victim was
taken to Kennedy University Hospital in
Stratford.
He was later transferred to
Cooper University Hospital in
Camden, where he was listed in
stable condition.
An investigation by the
Voorhees Police Department's
Criminal Investigations Bureau
and the Delaware River Port Authority Police resulted in the discovery of video surveillance from
the Ashland Speedline Station
that aided police in identifying

the two Camden men.

Both were taken into custody
without incident on March 27 at
the Walter Rand Transportation
Center in Camden by officers
from the Delaware River Port Authority Police Department's Transit Unit.
They were then
turned over to the
Voorhees Police Department for investigation and processing.
The 27-year-old man
was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a credit card and theft
of a credit card. He was remanded to the Camden County Jail on
$100,000 bail by the Voorhees Police Department.
The 24-year-old was charged by
summons with unlawful use of a
credit card.
He was released on his own recognizance by the Voorhees Police Department.
