“ ECOSAN AND
EMERGENCIES ”
Training for Understanding potential of ECOSAN from development projects to apply in emergency context

1.0 Ecosan and Emergencies (E & E) training course :

Due to rapid population growth, rapid urbanization, and Venue: Pune, Maharashtra, India
environmental changes, it is witnessed that disasters have (Nearest International Airport is
become increasingly diverse and complex rendering our Mumbai)
societies even more vulnerable to disasters. Also
humanitarian responses and interventions in these contexts Dates: 02nd - 05th March 2010.
have raised many a debate on the balance between human (Reporting on 1st evening)
and environmental needs. There is definitely a need to
conserve the already abused and limited resources, and
preserve nature; thus an ecological perspective to our work and way of thinking is inevitable. In
recent past the call for response and risk reduction measures taken by development and aid workers
to be ecologically sensitive has grown.

Most emergencies have complex causes and require complicated responses with not really durable
components as solutions. The initial response in an emergency may seem simple – provide
protection, shelter, clean water and food. However, the manner in which this humanitarian
relief is provided can have profound consequences for the affected society. Aid workers
responding to crisis situation need to be aware of the complexities of the emergency and the
consequences that may result from their actions.

RedR’s experience of deputing personnel over many years has shown that being competent in one’s
area of expertise is usually not enough in itself to cope with the rising demands of maintaining
and improving public health in the disaster affected area. This E&E module of RedR offers
participants the opportunity to broaden their knowledge base and practical skills in different
aspects of humanitarian action that need engineering responses.

Course Objectives:

In this 4 days training, first 2 days focus on understanding ecosan from development projects and
the second half of the course on identifying potential for emergency context should feature.
