t h e r e a r e cold a n d even dewy, m a k e for o n e of t h e m o r e
i n s p i r i n g visions t h a t life c a n offer before n i n e o'clock.) O r

Well! I t h i n k I have established t h a t t h e r e is a n e m o t i o n a l
history to m y w e a r i n g of glasses. So in saying t h a t she liked
t h e m , tall J o y c e w h o as I sit t y p i n g this towers above m e now
in a state of semi-nuditywas definitely saying t h e right t h i n g
if she was i n t e r e s t e d in g e t t i n g to my h e a r t , which she p r o b a
bly wasn't. Y o u have to b e e x t r e m e l y careful a b o u t compli
m e n t i n g a thirty-five-year-old m a l e t e m p w h o has achieved

s o m e o n e ' s c u b e , a n d my gaze j u s t l a u n c h e d toward her, div

c o m p l i m e n t e d , t a k i n g h e a r t from h a v i n g to pass t h r o u g h the

B u t r a t h e r t h a n h o l d i n g it immediately, I d e p r i v e d myself of
t h e sight of it for a little while a n d i n s t e a d gently p l a c e d my
h a n d o n h e r braid, w h i c h was cool a n d thick a n d s m o o t h a n d
dense, a totally different i d e a of hair, so different t h a t it is

later, as t h e b e d m a d e sloppy figure eights a r o u n d t h e h o t e l
r o o m (where I h a d b e e n left to convalesce), I p i n c h e d m y
swollen lip a n d n o t i c e d t h a t all traffic noise s t o p p e d . I realized
I was in t h e Fold. I walked downstairs to t h e m o t i o n l e s s h o t e l
b a r a n d b a c k to t h e k i t c h e n a n d ate two h u g e s h r i m p t h a t a
motionless c o o k o r cook's h e l p e r h e l d as h e a r r a n g e d a
s h r i m p cocktail. I was a m a z e d at h o w g o o d t h e cocktail s a u c e
tasted. I sucked o n a piece of lime a n d t h r e w it o u t in a c a n
b e h i n d t h e bar. I felt steadied. I w e n t o u t i n t o t h e lobby a n d
sat d o w n n e x t to a w o m a n o n a c o u c h a n d s m e l l e d t h e collar
of h e r coat deeply. At first I t h o u g h t it smelled like pickles,
a n d t h e n I realized t h a t it smelled like c i g a r e t t e s m o k e , a n d I
was very surprised to t h i n k t h a t pickles a n d cigarette s m o k e
were allied smells. (Is t h a t w h a t p e o p l e m e a n by a " s o u r "
smell?) T h e n I w e n t b a c k u p s t a i r s a n d p i n c h e d m y lip a g a i n
the s a m e way I h a d , a little to t h e right of c e n t e r , u n t i l it h u r t
a lot, to t u r n t h e Barclay H o t e l a n d t h e rest of t h e p l a n e t b a c k

b u s h i n g s lost contact. I p u s h e d it u n d e r my b e d a n d t h o u g h t
instead a b o u t m e a t t h e r m o m e t e r s a n d t o a d s w h o c a n h i b e r
n a t e for years in d r i e d desert m u d .
B u t after Miss D o b z h a n s k y h a d m o v e d m e to t h e b a c k of t h e
class, I woke u p in t h e m i d d l e of t h e n i g h t a n d let m y a r m
d r o p to t h e floor b e t w e e n t h e b e d a n d t h e wall. I was in t h e
h a b i t of d o i n g this fairly often; I did it to p r o v e to myself h o w
n o n c h a l a n t I was, h o w c e r t a i n I was t h a t t h e r e were n o crus
taceans u n d e r t h e b e d . T h i s time, t h o u g h , my h a n d b r u s h e d
against s o m e t h i n g w a r m . It was t h e t r a n s f o r m e r for t h e r a c e
track. It was still p l u g g e d in, still o n , still t r a n s f o r m i n g . I g o t
o u t of b e d a n d p u l l e d t h e track o u t . T h e t r a n s f o r m e r h a d a
r e d faceted light t h a t glowed faintly. It also h a d a c h r o m e
toggle switch. I t u r n e d o n t h e light in m y r o o m , so t h a t I c o u l d
see better, a n d h e l d t h e t r a n s f o r m e r . It was very heavy, with
r o u n d e d c o r n e r s , a n d it h a d a finish t h a t s e e m e d to have b e e n
m a d e by d i p p i n g it in thick black p a i n t a n d t h e n b l a s t i n g it
with h o t air so t h a t t h e p a i n t f o r m e d a t e x t u r e of tiny wrinkles.
It h a d a silver U L label o n t h e u n d e r s i d e . " U n d e r w r i t e r s L a b
o r a t o r i e s " a racy, vaguely u n d e r w e a r i s h n a m e . T h e
hum
t h a t the t r a n s f o r m e r m a d e was a l m o s t i n a u d i b l e . I t o u c h e d
the toggle switch, t h e n flipped it off, a n d s u d d e n l y I knew t h a t
this was t h e m a c h i n e I n e e d e d , a n d t h a t t h e n e x t t i m e I t u r n e d
t h e t r a n s f o r m e r back o n , it w o u l d s t o p everything.
I s m u g g l e d it a n d a n e x t e n s i o n c o r d i n t o class in my l u n c h
box. I did n o t h i n g with it all m o r n i n g . As t h e rest of t h e
s t u d e n t s were l i n i n g u p for l u n c h , w h e n Miss D o b z h a n s k y
stood halfway o u t t h e d o o r , I hastily p l u g g e d t h e e x t e n s i o n
c o r d into t h e o u t l e t u n d e r t h e l o n g table a g a i n s t t h e b a c k wall,
which was only a few feet from m y chair, a n d h i d t h e t r a n s
f o r m e r in my desk. O v e r l u n c h , t h o u g h I was q u i t e keyed u p ,
I gave n o t h i n g away. I casually discussed with m y friend T i m

w h a t it w o u l d b e like to b e a n a g i t a t o r BB ball in a c a n of
g r e e n spray p a i n t , as if it were a n o r d i n a r y day. W e a g r e e d t h a t
it w o u l d b e fun to d i g i n t o t h e p i g m e n t at t h e b o t t o m of t h e
spray c a n a n d t h e n fly u p t h r o u g h t h e pressurized froth a n d
clack a r o u n d b e t t e r p e r h a p s t h a n d e s c e n d i n g in a spherical
s p a c e vehicle i n t o t h e c h e m i c a l storms o n S a t u r n . T i m con
t e n d e d t h a t t h e r e were s o m e t i m e s two a g i t a t o r BBs in a single
c a n of spray p a i n t , a n d I disagreed, a r g u i n g t h a t it only
s o u n d e d as if t h e r e were two w h e n you s h o o k it fast.
I h a d n o t e x p e c t e d a n y o n e to n o t i c e t h e c o r d l e a d i n g i n t o
my desk, since I was in t h e back c o r n e r , a n d n o b o d y in fact
did. I let half a n h o u r go by, w a t c h i n g Miss D o b z h a n s k y dis
cuss a k i n d of slitted sunglasses t h a t t h e Eskimos whittled from
b o n e to avoid snow b l i n d n e s s . S h e b e g a n to write t h e old
spelling of Eskimo, with a q, o n t h e b o a r d in white chalk. My
h a n d s were d e e p in my desk; my fingertips t o u c h e d t h e wrin
kle-finish black p a i n t a n d t h e s m o o t h toggle switch. As she
e m b a r k e d o n t h e letter m, h e r b a c k to t h e class, I flipped t h e
switch. S h e d i d n ' t finish t h e m. S h e a n d t h e class were w i t h o u t
sound or motion.
I said, " H e y . " I said " H e y " again. N o b o d y t u r n e d toward
m e . F a r from b e i n g eerie o r d i s t u r b i n g , t h e silence was, I
f o u n d , q u i t e comfy. T h i s acoustical coziness, which is a con
sistent f e a t u r e of t h e Fold, is t h e result, I think, of t h e relative
sluggishness of t h e air m o l e c u l e s t h a t s u r r o u n d m e . S o u n d
diffuses o u t w a r d only a few feet, as far as I c a n tell. I ' m often
r e m i n d e d of a line in t h e first stanza of Keats's "Eve of St.
A g n e s " : " A n d silent was t h e flock in woolly fold." My Fold is
woolly.
Presently ( " p r e s e n t l y " is right!) I flipped t h e toggle back to
t h e off p o s i t i o n , deactivating t h e m a c h i n e . At o n c e everyone
a n d everything t o o k u p w h e r e they h a d left off. T h e world

e x p a n d e d , s o u n d i n g o n c e a g a i n as if it were r e c o r d e d in
stereo. Miss D o b z h a n s k y finished writing Esquimaux. S h e gave
n o indication t h a t she was aware t h a t a n y t h i n g o u t of t h e
o r d i n a r y h a d j u s t h a p p e n e d ; a n d as far as she was c o n c e r n e d ,
of course, n o t h i n g h a d h a p p e n e d . S h e t u r n e d toward us a n d
b e g a n talking a b o u t a t h i n strip of l a n d t h a t s h e c l a i m e d h a d
o n c e j o i n e d Alaska a n d Asia, over w h i c h tribes h a d traveled,
giving rise n o t only to t h e Eskimo, b u t to t h e A m e r i c a n I n d i
ans of t h e lower states. I m u s t have b e e n l o o k i n g at h e r with
a n expression of u n u s u a l attentiveness, o r even of r a p t u r e ,
b e c a u s e h e r gaze l a n d e d o n m e a n d she smiled. I knew we h a d
a special u n d e r s t a n d i n g . I knew also t h a t she m i g h t b e t h e
m o s t beautiful p e r s o n I w o u l d ever know. I knew t h a t she
knew t h a t I s o m e t i m e s d i d n ' t raise my h a n d to give answers to
t h e questions she asked even w h e n I knew t h e answers, b e
cause I w a n t e d to give h e r t h e o p t i o n of d r a w i n g o u t o t h e r
kids, of calling o n m e only w h e n she n e e d e d to, as a b a c k u p .
H e r e x p l a n a t i o n of t h e waves of Asian m i g r a t i o n s across t h e
B e r i n g Strait i n t e r e s t e d m e , so I let h e r finish before s t o p p i n g
the universe for a s e c o n d t i m e . As s o o n as she t u r n e d t o w a r d
t h e b l a c k b o a r d again, to write Bering, I flipped t h e switch a n d
took off all my clothes.
T h e air is q u i t e close in t h e Fold a n d takes a little g e t t i n g
used to, a l t h o u g h as l o n g as you wave y o u r a r m s a r o u n d every
so often t h e r e is n o real risk of asphyxiation. I was very c o n
scious of my b r e a t h i n g as I walked u p t h e row of desks a n d
chairs, n a k e d , a n d r e a c h e d my lovely t e a c h e r . "Miss D o b
zhansky?" I said, s t a n d i n g right b e h i n d her, t h o u g h I knew
t h a t she c o u l d n ' t h e a r m e . My p l a n , as I h a d conceived it in
a flash w h e n she h a d smiled at m e a m o m e n t before, was to
take off all h e r clothes a n d t h e n sit b a c k d o w n at my desk a n d
click t i m e b a c k o n t h a t is, t u r n t h e t i m e t r a n s f o r m e r off.

lovely to m e a n d she w o u l d m e e t this c h a l l e n g e with h e r
u s u a l a p l o m b . S h e w o u l d t u r n toward us with h e r h a n d s
s h i e l d i n g h e r breasts a n d look inquiringly at o u r faces, as if to
say, " H o w , class, h a s this h a p p e n e d ? " H e r eyes w o u l d seek o u t
m i n e , b e c a u s e she knew she c o u l d trust m e to h e l p h e r
t h r o u g h difficult m o m e n t s , a n d I w o u l d look b a c k at h e r with
a n a r d e n t , loving, serious expression. I w o u l d s t a n d a n d s h u s h
a n y o n e w h o d a r e d to snicker at t h e fact t h a t b o t h I a n d Miss
D o b z h a n s k y were c o m p l e t e l y n a k e d , a n d I w o u l d walk u p to
h e r a n d n o d at h e r as if to say, "Everything will b e all right,
Miss D o b z h a n s k y , " a n d collect h e r sweater a n d h e r dress,
w h i c h I w o u l d have left neatly folded o n h e r desk. She would
say, " T h a n k you, A r n o , " in a voice t h a t c o m m u n i c a t e d how
grateful she was t h a t I was in h e r life a n d was able to h e l p h e r
t h r o u g h this m o m e n t . S h e a n d I w o u l d retire to t h e cloak
r o o m for a few m i n u t e s , w h e r e I w o u l d h a n d h e r h e r clothes
o n e by o n e as she got dressed. S h e w o u l d d o t h e s a m e for m e .
W h e n we r e - e m e r g e d , I w o u l d take my seat a n d she would
c o n t i n u e h e r social studies lesson. T h e class, docile with
shock, w o u l d have r e m a i n e d silent t h r o u g h o u r whole ab
sence.
T h a t was my p l a n , b u t I s o o n f o u n d t h a t I h a d to modify it.
Miss D o b z h a n s k y was w e a r i n g h e r navy-blue d r o o p y sweater
a n d a s i m p l e white shirt b u t t o n e d at t h e t o p with a b l u e
e n a m e l S a t u r n p i n covering t h e t o p b u t t o n . T h e sweater was
already u n b u t t o n e d , so I left it a l o n e . B u t w h e n I r e a c h e d u p

shirt. H e r skin glowed in t h e shadowy cloth-diffused light. I
felt like a d a g u e r r e o t y p i s t , c r o u c h i n g a n d covering my h e a d
with a c a m e r a c l o t h to see m y subject m o r e completely. I saw
h e r s t o m a c h , w h i c h was extensive at this close r a n g e . I n t h e
m i d d l e of it was h e r belly-button.
T h i s I h a d n ' t r e c k o n e d o n . It was t h e b i g m o m e n t . I h a d
never seen a n y t h i n g so womanly, so g r o w n - u p - l o o k i n g , at
s u c h close r a n g e , in m y life. Miss Dobzhansky's belly-button
did n o t look like a child's belly-button at all. T h e r e was a sort
of s t r e t c h e d p r o s c e n i u m of skin over t h e t o p , a bell curve,
similar in a way to t h e e p i c a n t h i c eye-fold o n Asian p e o p l e
(like E s q u i m a u x ) , w h e r e a s t h e slope below led t h e eye

it in in my r o o m o n e last t i m e after d i n n e r a n d flipped t h e

O n t h e o t h e r h a n d , even six timeless m i n u t e s was pretty
good. I adjusted r e m a r k a b l y quickly to t h e idea t h a t I h a d seen
as m u c h of Miss D o b z h a n s k y as I was p r o b a b l y ever g o i n g to
see. My n e x t task, to w h i c h I d e v o t e d t h e e n s u i n g s p r i n g a n d
s u m m e r m o n t h s , was to d e v e l o p a n a l t e r n a t e , n o n - e l e c t r i c a l
way into t h e Fold. I e x p l o r e d a n u m b e r of e x p e r i m e n t a l possi

m o m e n t , a n d ate b o t h t h e cookies; I t h e n b r u s h e d a c r u m b
lightly from a breast, saying simply, " A c r u m b . " B u t we h a d
never h a d sex, she a n d I. A n d w h e n I b r u s h e d away t h a t
c r u m b , I did it with s u c h a light, shy t o u c h t h a t I ' d felt only
