I had theprivilegetomeettheofficialsfromToastmastersInternationalinBucharestatthe
District 59 Governors meeting on February 69. Andrei Popescu from the English
speaking club in Bucharest did an amazing job of organizing this event. What great
leadership Toastmasters has, giving us its full support as Romania integrates with the
District. Be sure to read Camis article on the next page which explains the upcoming
change.
We will soon be part of a large network of enthusiastic, kindhearted people who are
encouraging and determined to develop more quality experiences for its members.
Starting July 1, all Romanian clubs will begin anewadventure inToastmasters! Joode
Mendona, District 59 Governor, sends Brasov Toastmasters his greetings and wishes
usagreatyearahead!
I am looking forward to future collaborations in the district. Invitations have been sent
throughout the District, and in the near future, we can expect visits from Toastmasters
officersfromdifferentcountries.
I wish you all the best and encourage you to make the most out of the Toastmasters
experience.Youllgetmoreoutofitthanwhatyouputin!

JoiningtheDistrict
byCameliaCordacea,TM
A District is a way of organizing or grouping Toastmaster clubs
around the world. Asthenumberofclubshavegrownsince1924
whenthe first club was createdintheUS,theywerefirstgrouped
into Areas. Areas were then grouped into Divisions, and
Divisions were grouped into Districts. Each District is lead by a
Governor.

District95

There arearound 90 TM Districts worldwide. ContinentalEurope

isrepresented by District 59 which was establishedin2002.For
Romania, being part of a District means we are not isolated
anymore. We are part of an international organization, and now
we have both rights and responsibilities. Here are some of our
newexcitingrights:

members can participate in educational events and
conferenceswithinAreas/Divisions/Districts
members can compete in speech contests at
Area/Division/Districtlevels and then at theWorldChampion

members within a District can host workshops during the

Romania has successfully finished the application process of
joiningDistrict 59. Herearesomeoftherequirementswehadto
fulfill:
We had to prove that we had high activity. This is where all
the DCP ribbons won by clubs in Romania played a very
important role. I was proud that Brasov had always won the
DCPaward.
We hadtobeaneighborwithanalreadyDistrictedcountry.In
ourcase,thiswasHungary.
All the clubs in Romania had to agree verballyandinwriting

Romania had to prove it could financially sustain itself, and
that it wouldn'tcosttheDistrictmorethanit'sgettingfromthe
extrafee.
On November 15, 2013, at the Annual District Conference in
Budapest, Romanias application was accepted in the District,
and the changeswillbeeffectiveJuly1,2014. Thisdatewillhave
another implication: District 59 will be split into two smaller
Districts: District 59 and District 95. Romania will be part of the
latter.
This is a new beginning for the Romanian clubs, and we are
lookingforwardtobeingpartofthisneworganization!

I knew it was time to improve my communication skills and get

pastthe nervousness of public speaking when I attended my 10
year high school class reunion. There were many things I had
wanted to share with my colleagues about my life and activities
untilitcamemyturntospeak.
Surprisingly, I found myself intimidated and overcome with
emotionsto the point where IalmostforgotthethingsIwantedto
share. Needless to say, Ill be better prepared for the 15 year
high school reunion! Im counting on my fellow Toastmasters to
helpmeachievehighergoalsofselfdevelopment.
Thank you, Paty Potecea, my high school colleague, for inviting

MovieNight
byTeodoraZegrean,TM

In January, William hosted another great movie night with

Chasing Mavericks, a 2012 American biographical drama film
codirected by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted. The movie is
based on the true story of a Santa Cruz area surfer nicknamed
FrostywhohelpedshapethelegendofJayMoriarity.
Despite the cold weather and snow, we enjoyed the film about
surfing and mentoring. The movie was thrilling with its surfing
scenes and inspiring as it dealt with the teaching relationship
betweenFrostyandJay.

Treasurer'sReport

When I saw in the CL manual that I needed to chair a

membership or public relations event for Project 8, the first
thought that came to my mind was, What possibly could Ido?I
knewIdidntwanttodosomethingwehadalreadydone.
After thinking about it for a few days, I decided I wanted to
encourage members to bring guests so they could see for
themselves what we do at Toastmasters and the benefits that
comefrombeingamember.
The next step was to put together a proposal for the board in
ordertogettheirapproval.Theprocessofwritingitouthelped me
clarify whatthis event would be and what it wouldtaketomakeit
happen. I also talked to past and present members of theboard
to get their feedback and ideas while putting the proposal
together.

how effective this event will be, but I am glad I didit.Seeingyour

Do youhave an idea for aneventoraworkshopyou wouldliketo

shot. There is not much tolose, butthereismuchtogain.Talkto
