Introduction to Order of Operations

5.OA.A.2 Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without
evaluating them. For example, express the calculation add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2 as 2 (8 + 7).
Recognize that 3 (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the
indicated sum or product.

This is the students first day learning about the Order of Operations and
how to apply it to an expression. In order to successfully reach the
objective, the students will be have to be able to apply what they learned
in guided practice into their independent practice.
Students have background knowledge of multi-digit addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. However not all students are 100% fluent with
their basic multiplication facts.
Content
This lesson will help students begin to develop an understanding of what the Order of Operations is and how to
apply it when solving a mathematical equation. The skills and knowledge needed in order to complete an equation
using the Order of Operations was broken down into small, discrete and sequential segments which was followed
by guided and independent practice.
Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to memorize the phrase Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally as a way to learn and apply the
Order of Operations.
The student will be able to apply their knowledge of the Order of Operation in order to evaluate and solve
mathematical expressions.

How will you teach the content?


T will tell the students to take out a piece of paper and a pencil.
Before beginning the lesson, T will ensure that all students are seated and that positive behaviors are being
displayed and that expectations for behavior are stated.
T will introduce the lesson by telling that they will be learning about The Order of Operations
T will ask students to quietly raise their hands if they have ever heard of The Order of Operations.
T will encourage students to ask questions when necessary.
T will once again check that student have taken out their paper and pencils.
T will display the Smart Notebook lesson created for the lesson.
T will go through the Smart Notebook lesson and read the various slides that will help introduce the phrase
Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally.
T will ask questions that will be evident on the Smart Notebook lesson.
The students will watch a song/video from Scholastic Study Jams that was linked into the Smart Notebook
lesson.
When slide 6 appears that T will ask students to come up to the board and put the Order of Operations words in
order.
For slide 7 there will be a mathematical equation displayed and the T will guide the students through the
answer.
For slides 8 -12 the T will ask the students to write down the mathematical equations on paper and then the T
will ask students to go up to the board to answer the question.
T will circulate the room to ensure that all students are participating by attempting to solve the equation on
paper.
Once all equations/slides are completed the T will read the last slide on the Smart Notebook lesson.
T will ask students, What are the two ways remember the Order of Operations?
o Students will respond PEMDAS and Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally
T will ask students, What does each first letter in Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally stand for?
T will tell the students that they will continue to practice the Order of Operations.
Teacher will hold up the Assessing the Lesson assessment sheet and tell students to complete it and then hand it
in.

Smart Notebook Lesson Introduction to the Order of Operations Used to teach the lesson
Math in Focus Grade 5 textbook (resource, if necessary)
Student math notebook or lined paper Students will solve equations through guided and independent
practice in these notebooks.

Evaluation Strategies
I will be assessing student performance throughout the lesson. The students will answer questions as they are
displayed on the SmartBoard. At the end of the lesson I will also be giving each student a sheet with one
question on it that I refer to as Assessing the Lesson. Each student will complete this sheet individually and
hand it in.
