CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.1

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb,
oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger
unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.
Subject(s) of the lesson
Prerequisite Knowledge: What do they need to know? What will
you have them recall?
Approximating Measurement
This will be an introductory lesson for students to customary forms
of measurement. Some students may have prior knowledge on
associated vocabulary others may not.
Content Describe in a paragraph. You can also add an outline.
One of our math units focuses on measurement, both customary and metric. Not only will students
have to differentiate between customary and metric units; they will also need to choose an
appropriate unit of measurement as well as converting between two. Once introduced to the
associated units of customary length, capacity and weight students will need to understand the
differences between the various associated units.
List the objectives for this lesson. They should include what the students will learn from your
instruction
SWBA to understand customary measurement and choose an appropriate unit for a given object.
How will you teach the content? Details help. Include the game(s), what do you do before the
games and how do you follow-up.

First, T will introduce the concept of customary measurement and where it is used. (i.e U.S)
Next, S will turn & talk to brainstorm any customary units specifically related to length,
capacity and weight.
T will call S back together to share writing units on the board (inch, foot, yard, mile, etc). To
help students visually understand the differences, T will provide examples of each. As well as
the tools associated with customary measurement (ruler and yard stick). If needed, students
will be prompted to determine possible examples.
Then, T will introduce the game: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-4/which-customary-unit-isappropriate S will have to work together and discuss which unit is an appropriate measure for
the provided object. (This will help to strength their understanding of the content, as they are
provided feedback with each answer).
Once the game is finished, S will work around the room with a partner to locate/brainstorm
appropriate objects for each customary length unit (in this case). For example: inch (pencil,
book, etc.)
After some time, S will be called back together (whole group) to share their ideas with the
class, so T can check for understanding and accuracy. Lists will be collected as well.

Additional materials you will use and how will you use them.

Game
Classroom list to further understanding S will use real-world relatable objects and choose an
appropriate customary measurement
SMART board- game will be pulled up for S to complete

Evaluation Strategies
The game will help me to evaluate S understanding based upon their feedback (thats
correct/incorrect). If incorrect, we can then have a class discussion to clarify and clear up any
misunderstandings.
The partner list as well would provide further evaluation of S understanding. Are S
completing their list accuracy, with little to no difficulty?
Are they meeting the objective? - Do they understand customary measurement and can they
choose an appropriate unit for a given object?
