GATHERING SONG: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (ELW 836)
GREETING
INTRODUCTION
The image of the Good Shepherd shows us how the risen Christ brings us
to life. It is the relationship between the shepherd and the sheep, one of
mutual knowledge and love, that gives the shepherd authority. The
shepherd's willingness to lay down his life for the sheep shows his love.
First John illustrates what it means to lay down our lives for one another
by the example of sharing our wealth with any sister or brother in need.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
O God, your Son makes himself known to all his disciples in the breaking
of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming
work, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever. Amen.
CANTICLE OF PRAISE
PSALMODY: Psalm 23
Let us pray.
O Lord Christ, good shepherd of the sheep, you seek the lost and guide us
into your fold. Feed us, and we shall be satisfied; heal us, and we shall be
whole. Make us one with you, for you live and reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Refrain:
Tone:
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING: Acts 4:512
5
The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,
with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who
were of the high-priestly family. 7When they had made the prisoners stand
in their midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do
this?" 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the
people and elders, 9if we are questioned today because of a good deed done
to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed,
10
let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is
standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11This Jesus is
'the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;
it has become the cornerstone.'
12
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven
given among mortals by which we must be saved."
6
We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us and we ought to
lay down our lives for one another. 17How does God's love abide in anyone
who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet
refuses help?
18
Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and
19
action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will
reassure our hearts before him 20whenever our hearts condemn us; for God
is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Beloved, if our hearts
do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; 22and we receive from
him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what
pleases him.
23
And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name
of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
24
All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them.
And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18No one
takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it
down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command
from my Father."
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson
VERSE:
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep. 12The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the
sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away and the
wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13The hired hand runs away because
a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14I am the good shepherd. I know
my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know
the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that
do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my
voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17For this reason the Father
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third
day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is
worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the
dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Confident that the resurrection of Christ has defeated sin and death, we
offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.
Please sit or kneel as you are able.
Each petition ends with:
let us pray.
Have mercy, O God.
Holy God, by the death and resurrection of your Son, you have granted new
life, abundant renewal, and salvation. Hear our prayers for the sake of the
one who has set us free, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

PEACE
OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower
us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad
and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need,
You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and
great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave
your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but
have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill
for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the
night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim
the Lord's death until he comes.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Let us pray. Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ's resurrection you
send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the
great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you
complete in everything good so that you may do God's will, working in you
that which is pleasing in God's sight; through + Jesus Christ,
to whom be the glory forever and ever.
