Golden Eagles take on Vikings

Five Shamong
students earn spots
in Philadelphia Boys
Choir & Chorale
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
There must be something in
the water in the Shamong school
system. It now has five students
who have earned a spot in the
prestigious Philadelphia Boys
Choir & Chorale due to their extraordinary vocal talents.
Stephan Oliva, Brady Winger,
Nick Vitagliano, Jackson Graham and Noah Hasson are all in
the choir and will be performing
at The Kimmel Center on June 7.
The spring concert is bound
to be amazing, Noahs mom Deborah said.
The choir holds a winter concert and a spring concert each
year. It also does smaller events
on the side such as performing at
baseball opening day ceremonies.

Special board of education meeting

awards bids for school projects
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The
Shamong
Township
School District held a special
board meeting on April 14 to
award bids for a handful of the
projects that have recently been
in discussions.
These capital projects are
being funded through the 20152016 budget as well as grant
money from the School Development Authority.
The Shamong Township Board
of Education advertised for classroom air-conditioning and window replacement at Indian Mills
Elementary School, and exterior
door replacement at Indian Mills
Memorial School.
At the April 14 meeting, the
board awarded a contract for the
projects as outlined in bid specifications dated in March.
Its actually part of a ROD

grant that the school district applied for, Board Secretary Marie
Goodwin said. The school development authority grant awarded
this grant money from the regular operating district fund accounting for 40 percent of the
project.
These three projects are all a
part of the school districts longrange facilities plan, which is essentially a list of all the projects it
plans to complete over the next 10
years. They are all put in a database that is updated every time a
new project is put in play.
The total projected cost for the
classroom air conditioning was
approved by the Department of
Education at $1.2 million. The
ROD grant would cover 40 percent of this, which is $476,800,
leaving $715,200 for the local
share.
The projection for the windows
being replaced at the elementary

school totaled $169,000. The ROD

grant will cover $67,600, leaving
$101,400 for the local share.
The exterior door replacement
projections totaled $131,000 with
the ROD grant covering $52,000
and the local share covering
$78,600.
The lowest bidder was awarded
at the meeting. The air-conditioning project was awarded to Estock
Piping Company. The replacement of the exterior doors and replacement of windows was
awarded to Levy Construction
Company.
The school district is planning
on late summer for the start time
of these projects.

in our opinion

Enough regulation already!

We should promote innovation, not curb it

ix years ago, in 2009, a man had

a vision of changing the way a
long-standing industry operated. He felt the way the industry was
run wasnt the most efficient, wasnt
the most effective, hadnt adapted with
the times and didnt provide consumers with the best experience at the
best price.
Today, that mans company, Uber, is
well known and is in cities across the
country.
The company uses the person-to-person model to offer taxi-like services to
people through a mobile app. Users
download the app, select a car in their
area they want to use for the ride and
pay for the fare. The fare is listed based
on the trips length, and no cash is
needed while taking the trip.
Uber is catching on like wildfire
from users, who enjoy its accessibility selecting a ride with a few taps on
the phone instead of calling a taxi
company and waiting long times for

cheaper price.
Uber also provides jobs to drivers
who are looking to earn extra money.
But this could all come crashing to a
halt, Uber says, if a New Jersey bill is
passed that would put onerous regulations on the company.
The legislation would require ridehailing companies such as Uber to display a Motor Vehicle Commission
marker when drivers are searching for
fares and would require background
checks for drivers, safety inspections
for vehicles and higher insurance regulations.
An Uber spokesman said the company already provides more insurance

than taxi companies do, and said if the

bill is passed, the company might be
forced out of New Jersey, resulting in
the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
A similar bill in Kansas was struck
down by Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto,
and we couldnt agree more with his
reasoning:
Kansas should be known as a state
that embraces economic growth and
innovation. The jobs created by this
new industry can bring opportunity to
many Kansas families. An open and
free marketplace often results in higher quality products at a more affordable price.
New Jersey, similarly, should be a
state that embraces economic growth
and innovation. Uber found a way to
compete in the transportation market.
Good for them. They should be praised
for that, not overregulated to the point
of extinction.
If taxi companies cant compete, too
bad. Thats called business.

IMSC club soccer tryouts week of May 4

During the week of May 4, we
will hold our annual club soccer
tryouts for IMSC. We are committed to doing our best to provide
the players and parents in our
club with professional training, a
fun and enjoyable learning soccer
experience, and a nice facility
and environment in which to play
soccer; all this at reasonable
costs. We do this because of our
passion for the game of soccer
and to provide the best travel program experience IMSC soccer
can bring to the children of the
Seneca District. In towns our size,
where the pool of players is
small, it's not easy to sustain such
a program but our program has
grown and flourished quite well!
We truly have a strong community and dedicate ourselves to the
program.
Recently, we've also partnered
with Global Premier Soccer to
further develop the infrastructure for players joining the IMSC

travel and the IMAA rec soccer

programs in Indian Mills. Players
from others towns may and are
encouraged to join the IMSC travel program. We also purchased
four sets of portable lights to use
at our soccer complex for the fall
season since the number of teams
has grown. This will allow us to
take advantage of our recently expanded complex sixsoccer fields
on Atsion Road.
You
can
go
to

www.imsoccer.org for information regarding our tryouts the

first week of May. Please also take
a look at our Facebook page to
keep track of what IMAA is doing
to keep our programs strong and
serving our community!

Relay for Life funds life-saving research

Dont leave a tangled mess

Volunteers and participants needed for American Cancer Society fundraiser

By DEBORAH COONEY
Special to The Sun
On this Volunteer Recognition
Day, I am writing you as a volunteer and as senior manager of the
American Cancer Societys Relay
For Life. I have worked for the
American Cancer Society for a
year and a half, but my journey
with the ACS started 13 years ago
as a volunteer. I first became involved with the Relay For Life out
of a sense of gratitude for my
daughters survival of leukemia. I
have remained involved since
then because of my intense desire to play my role in the fight
against cancer! My daughter is
now considered cured, and she
will graduate from college this
May and begin her career in
Boston in July. However, this
story would not be a happy one
were in not for research that was
funded by the American Cancer
Society. It would be nice if my experience with cancer ended with
my daughter, but like so many
other families, we have faced this
disease many times with other

family members. Like so many

other volunteers, I recognize that
I cannot stop my fight until there
is a cure for all cancers. This is
why I continue to volunteer with
the American Cancer Society by
participating in Relay For Life
and have raised close to $8,000 so
far for the upcoming event in
May.
This spring, volunteers from
across the country will take to the
track in more than 5,500 Relay
For Life events nationwide. In
The Suns readership area there
are several Relay events and the
participants of these events will
raise more than $1 million this
year alone. This money will be
used for life-saving research and
patient service programs such as
Hope Lodge, Road To Recovery
and Look Good Feel Better just to
name a few.
Our Relay For Life events make
it possible for these programs and

research, and it is the volunteers

who work tirelessly on our planning committees that make the
Relay For Life events possible.
These volunteers work yearlong
to plan Relay For Life events.
They work long hours while holding jobs and balancing busy family lives.
Our family of volunteers extends beyond Relay For Life.
Whether its walking in our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, planning our Hope
Gala, driving patients to and from
treatments, preparing a meal for
the patients at Hope Lodge, running a Look Good Feel Better program or helping out with the dayto-day tasks at our local ACS office, our volunteers are the heart
of our organization. I am inspired by their dedication and
commitment to the fight against
cancer and can honestly say they
are the reason I enjoy my job and

look forward to going to work

every day! If you are interested in
learning more about how to get
involved with Relay For Life, you
can contact me at (856) 616-1651
ext 3116 or visit www.RelayForLife.org to find a Relay near you.
If you are interested in learning about other volunteer opportunities with the American Cancer Society, call our Cherry Hill

my-nominated Philadelphia Boys
Choir & Chorale has cultivated a
following worldwide for these
highly-acclaimed concerts.
Joining this group has ultimately created amazing opportunities for him, mother of
Stephan, Rita said. It has given
him an appreciation of many different genres of music, as well as
different languages.
Under Music Director Jeffrey
R. Smith, PBCC maintains an extensive concert schedule throughout the Mid-Atlantic, as well as an
international touring program.
Established in 1968, its achievements include world tours,
recordings with internationally
renowned orchestras and soloists
such as Luciano Pavarotti and
also international television appearances
including
Good
Morning America and Saturday Night Live.
Based on the childs age, they
are placed in a specific grouping,

OPEN 7 DAYS

starting with the under thirdgrade beginning cadets, followed

by the fourth- and fifth-grade advanced cadets and finally the performing choir.
The boys come from all different parts of the area and get into
performing for all different reasons.
When eighth grader Stephan
Oliva from the performing choir
told me that I was a good singer
and I should try out for The
Philadelphia Boys Choir, I decided that I wanted to see what it was
like so I tried out and made it,
said Noah, 11, a fifth grader at Indian Mills Memorial.
Brady is always singing
around the house! mother April
Winger said. They were both in
the choir at the elementary
school, and the music teacher,
Kim Martin, encouraged them to
try out.
Brady is 8 years old and in second grade at Indian Mills Elementary School.
Singing has become a big part
of these little guys lives over the
years. They practice each week
on Wednesdays and Fridays for
these concerts.

Along with that, it has also become a large part of the lives of
their parents, who deserve a lot of
credit for their success.
Due to the fact that the members reside in different areas
around South Jersey and
Philadelphia, the Shamong group
makes an hour commute twice
each week to get to the facility.
It has all been worthwhile,
though, as the kids all admitted to
having had some great memories
as a result of being a part of the
group, and plan to continue their
singing careers in high school.
I think my most exciting performance was my first ever at
Christmas in front of a lot of people, Brady said. I dont get nervous, though. I like to show off my
talents!
My favorite memory was
when we performed at The Nutcracker at The Academy of
Music in Philadelphia and we got
to do a cool segment with no
words, just humming different
melodies, Noah said.
My favorite part so far was
singing in some really great concert halls and cathedrals, such as
Kings College Chapel in Cambridge, England, Notre Dame in
Paris, France, the Cardiff Millennium Centre and Carnegie Hall
in New York City, Stephan said.
Every summer, the performing
choir travels somewhere different. Last year, it performed in
England, and the year before that,
it was in France.
The groups upcoming performances will be held at venues
such as Carnegie Hall, NotreDame in Paris, King's College
Chapel in Cambridge, and locally
at the Kimmel Center, the Mann
Center for Performing Arts and
the Academy of Music. In the
summer, PBCC will embark on a
three-week, 17-city concert tour
through China.
They go all over the world to
different venues, but this is the
first one in a long time at The
Kimmel Center, and the boys said
they are very excited to put on a
show.
